    I thought the teacher reductions were going to be done by attrition?

    The Ontario government should just say the reductions are being done to have enough money to combat climate change. Too many teachers are driving SUVs instead of Cars To Go. 🙁 Fewer teachers driving means less CO2.

    Larger class sizes mean fewer classrooms to heat. Less lighting means less electricity, etc.

    1. One excuse for having such a large number of teachers is the oft-cited student-teacher ratio. Presumably, a lower value for that figure means that an individual teacher can devote more time to his or her students.

      Similarly, in the post-secondary realm, instructors and professors are expected to keep specific office hours, meaning that they are available for student consultations.

      In my experience, that whole idea was a joke. I tried something like that in some of my courses by running unofficial problem-solving sessions, attendance being voluntary. At first, there was often a great deal of interest, but, after, say, the first month, the number of students who showed up dropped off, particularly before mid-term exams. Eventually, I cancelled those sessions and, in the last years of teaching, I didn’t bother with them as they, for the most part, were a waste of my time.

      Similarly, I gave my office telephone number and even my office e-mail address, emphasizing that all the students had to do was call me and make an appointment. Few, if any, took advantage of that.

      Sadly, many of those sessions were attended by the better students or marginal ones who were determined to pass the courses in question. They generally would have made arrangements to see me in any case.

      Consequently, when I hear teachers complaining that they can’t spend as much time with their students, I have to question the validity of that concern. Many of the students that attended my institution were fresh out of high school, where they had acquired the academic habits that they unhesitatingly displayed to me in my courses.

    2. Has pouring more and more $ into the system had any positive results? We all know the answer to that, but most are too afraid to address that particular elephant in the room – smaller class size has not had a positive outcome correlation.
      And what is the % of education dollars going to administration and other costs, as opposed to being directed into classrooms? Cutting budgets by cutting teachers, while leaving the same # of administrators, is a recipe for disaster. Most of our bozo theories of education came from those administrators….. if there are more of them per 100 teachers, they will have more time on their hands to dream up ever more “progressive” educational methods. Progressing towards what is not to be discussed.

    3. Good idea, could also use that angle to manage Immigration. Canada must meet its co2 goals we can no longer take fake refugees and chain migration.

Something I would dearly love to see in my lifetime – a True Strike against Socialism-Marxism, and for many, its Death knell. (And in particular, the Teachers Unions – the indoctrinators)

      Its time conservatives fully embraced a New set of ROE.
      Public Service UNIONS are at the Root of this progressive ROT.

    5. Ford’s people are not getting out in front of this story. They should aggressively state that it is by attrition; that no one’s job is protected in the private sector, nor the public sector; that the puspose of schooling is not to employ teachers and feed the TU; that the teacher’s union is not the government; that the TU should not use children as propaganda; that politicization of children in class must stop. etc.

      But, I suspect, we will have the failure of will that so characterizes Canadian Conservative parties. DO IT, DAMN IT!

      1. Robert, what I find interesting is that no one seems to be doing the math. 3,475 teaching positions for an $851 million saving equals $244,892 PER TEACHER! And that does NOT include pension contributions. But then, with math scores in the tank, I guess I shouldn’t expect any different response, especially from the MSM.

      2. Robert I think you are right. However, the media unions will ignore any thing Ford and his people say.

        Whether you like Trump or not, he manages to get his message out with short to the point tweets.

        Ford, and all conservatives need to embrace that messaging more effectively.

        Others here may have additional ways to get the message out. But conservatives need to become more active, similar to unions who always seem to be able to mobilize large numbers. Just my thoughts.

    1. I did a 18 day photo safari in Kruger several years ago, we were well off the beaten track most of the time. This is a wide open and very large park, not hard to see how these poachers can get away with this. Shares a border with Mozambique, so very little access control.

      Elephants are extremely dangerous, almost as bad as hippos. A couple of times while photo shooting from the vehicle I had one foot with the clutch in and the other on the brake but hovering over the gas. When they are close and those ears start flapping, attention is required!

      I’ve also seen some left-overs from the lions, before the jackals get to it, pretty gross so I don’t think they would be too badly affected by a nice tender poacher. The buzzards eat what the jackals leave behind.

  19. Talking about gas prices and BC being a shining example of how beneficial a carbon tax is, I have been watching Global Vancouver news the last few days.
    Mike Campbell this am showed that the BC gas price has about 55 cents of taxes on each liter.
    On Sat am news Global showed a bunch of Lower Mainland Cdns gassing up in the US.
    One woman filled her truck and at least 8 or more twenty liter red plastic gas tanks also. She told Global she saved at least $35 by doing this.
    The other Cdn they talked to said he saved at least $50 per tank full on his 3/4 ton truck. And he does it once a week.
    So BC is actually cheating on their emissions because these gas purchases would not show up in provincial data, if I’m not mistaken, deluding officials into thinking BC has cut their fossil fuel use.
    You have to wonder how much of this cross border gassing up goes on in Ontario and Quebec also?

    The other story about BC is that they leave out the fact that about 80% of BC’s population lives in called the lower mainland along with Vancouver Island, all which has a “southern Mediterranean climate” as Wiki describes it.
    Compared to the Prairies which has 3 cities over a million and several cities of 100,000 spread over thousands of square miles, with its highly variable weather.

    Actually the real reason Premier Horgan doesn’t want more oil tankers coming into port is that they want the lanes kept clear for the freighters full of illicit Asian munney pouring in to benefit the elected officials/crooks/casinos while destroying the housing market for native BCers.

      Works for me! I frequently go down to Ogdensburg, New York and always gas up just before I return to Canada. Gas is currently about 15 cents a litre cheaper.

      Even after paying the bridge toll both ways, I still save money. I’d be disappointed if Canadians within range of the US border weren’t doing this right across the country. Why would you not?

He was right. The next week shows him in his bike riding paraphernalia paying an even more exorbitant price of $1.60 per liter! Ha!

          These videos are great and there are many of this genre as they show everyday life through the point of view of the French Canadians that most people don’t get to see or ‘hear’ if one is from outside of the province. There is a lot of profanity and how about those pretty spooky eyes and mouths?
