I can’t tell you where the conference is taking place, because the original locale, a large Toronto synagogue, withdrew its invitation when it was “doxxed” (with a photo of the building) in a column by Michael Coren in Now Toronto, fomenting security concerns. As is becoming the norm for groups mounting events that deal with conservative ideas or politically incorrect topics, locales are being kept secret until the last minute to avoid potential violence from Antifa-style activists, for whom Coren’s column was, in my opinion, a dog whistle.
From fake conservative to fake leftist, the only thing consistent about Coren is fake sanctimony.

Several years ago Coren wrote an article stating that he was changing his political perspective due to his son coming out of the closet and admitting he was gay. Coren then wrote another column a few months later stating he just had an epiphany and realized the conservative viewpoint was one of hatred and divisiveness.
The man writes like a bitter old progressive with a big “hate” on for anyone to the right of Jack Layton. I can’t be bothered to read his columns, the man is to put it simply, full of shit.
Probably a repressed homosexual himself, too vain to out himself, but nobody cares any more.
I have been shocked and puzzled by Coren’s conversion for years. He used to make so much sense, his comments were based on logic and reality. Now he seems to have gone off his rocker. His son coming out shouldn’t have altered his outlook on truth like that. So sad.
That’s the thing. And why I intensely distrust whatever he says. It’s one thing to drop being anti-gay for his son. It’s quite another thing to do a 180 on all other previously-held beliefs. Either the cognitive dissonance broke his brain, or he’s just an attention-seeking poseur. Either way, not worth my time.

Since he apparently dislikes “rule of law”, it’s probably fair to assume he prefers “rule of mob” or “rule of commissars”.
Isn’t it about time for Coren to change religions again.
My concern is not Coren’s reasons for doxxing but the question of whether the venue should have cancelled the event. In these strange times, we need to be discussing controversial subjects that may inflame some participants or onlookers. Whether those inflamed are snowflakes of the left, zealots of the religion of peace, or hair-trigger alt-right score-settlers, the people who are still willing to approach questions from a non-ideological common sense point of view should have opportunities to speak and listen. It’s called discourse and it used to flourish despite large differences of opinion.
Then as to Coren, he might just have been getting excited about the event and wishing to draw attention to it. He did seem to make a left turn on his personal journey a few years ago. These things happen. Sometimes an ideologue falls out with others and wants to let them know he can live without their fellowship. Or he meets a girl. (I know, Coren is long in tooth. I’m longer but even guys my age could meet a girl, ya never know). Then it’s a question of not sabotaging the potential relationship with stated opinions that you know will spell the end. Luckily in my own case my love life overlaps my point of view reasonably well. It would get boring if your spouse or significant other agreed with everything. And I’d have to question her sanity at that point.
Coren has always been a smug authoritarian, similar to Bill O’Reilly. In those days, they both hid behind their Catholicism. Back in the days of the Western Standard, Ezra used to put him up against Karen Selick every week to debate various topics. Karen, a principled libertarian consistently made him look like a fool. It doesn’t surprise me that Coren is against free speech as on that topic he is consistent. Free speech is the only thing between civil society and civil war or authoritarianism. It’s an area, ironically, where I would be happy to see police enforce (kinetically, if necessary) the security of venues to ensure freedom of controversial speech. Peaceful protest – OK. Obstruction, threats, intimidation, physical assault, etc. – full force of the law!
I used to subscribe to Western Standard. That was where I first encountered Coren. My recollection is that he did very well.

Social conservatives have tended to be easy to sucker with empty promises (cf. Tim Hudak, Patrick Brown, MP Bill Casey, or most recently, Maxime Bernier) but I never quite understood what my friends saw in the faux Catholic Michael Coren. And just recently, on CBC’s unlistenable “Sunday Edition” Coren was reunited with its smug, sanctimonious house Catholic apostate, Michael Enright.
