When biologists synthesize DNA, they take pains not to create or spread a dangerous stretch of genetic code that could be used to create a toxin or, worse, an infectious disease. But one group of biohackers has demonstrated how DNA can carry a less expected threat—one designed to infect not humans nor animals but computers.
In new research they plan to present at the USENIX Security conference on Thursday, a group of researchers from the University of Washington has shown for the first time that it’s possible to encode malicious software into physical strands of DNA, so that when a gene sequencer analyzes it the resulting data becomes a program that corrupts gene-sequencing software and takes control of the underlying computer.

No worries, I’ve set my DNA’s AutoPlay to OFF
Some believe this supports their theory that we are all “living” in a computer simulation.
Holographic Universe
Evil is programmed?
I was told that I had a few duplicate strands in my DNA, the most notable (and embarrassing) being the ‘stares at boobs’ sequence.
Also the tendency (equally embarrassing) to repeat myself.

All I could think of when reading this latest precautionary tale about our dependence upon high tech complexities … is … Global Warming computer models. Have they all been infected with viruses to cause them to churn out hyper-doom and gloom with every run? The actual DNA of our planet’s climate(s) hasn’t changed … but the computer-model virus has changed the computed results. And therefore changed our responses to counterproductive self-destruction.
No virus necessary.
When set up to produce Gospel from Garbage, the results are ..well..um programmed in.
The desired result was the starting point,so the result is preordained.
What is truly stunning is the “evidence value” assigned to these models,by an organization that acknowledge weather is impossible to model,as predicted by chaos theory and even when the start conditions are all known, such a model must diverge by the 5th? iteration.
Of course with weather/climate we do not even know all the input parameters.
The one that cracked me up,Water Vapour, too hard to model, not sufficiently understood to model,so the Team IPCC left it out of their programmes.
I guess only us “deniers” think we live on a world dominated by water.
If our greatest minds have time to invent “threats” that sound like the plot of a comic book, they have time to devise solutions to real threats to industrial civilization, such as Islam and the unchecked multiplication of humans with IQ’s too low to sustain industrial civilization.
A number of years ago, several papers dealing with genetic computers were published. Like the article suggested, an algorithm could be encoded into a DNA strand. The problem is that genetic processes can take a long time to complete, so that approach might not be all that effective or, for that matter, efficient.
It’s an intriguing idea, but I don’t think it garnered much interest as I haven’t heard anything about it for some 15 years.
