  8. If the FBI were onto a possible terror plot going on in Kingston Ontario how can we believe Goodale when he tells us we are safe after a “minor” has been arrested in the case?

    1. While I wouldn’t believe anything Goodale says, terrorism is not a significant threat.

      Impaired driving, texting while driving, and influenza are much bigger threats since they kill and injure far more people than terrorism.

      The biggest killer? Excluding heart disease and cancer, preventable mistakes by the medical profession kill over 100,000 a year in the US.

      The biggest threat to Canadians? In my opinion it’s a major pandemic. Followed by drug resistant bacteria. The damage from either of these is much greater than terrorism.

          Traffic deaths in US in 2018 were 37,133. I don’t have reliable numbers for the break down of drunk driving or texting driving deaths, but both are higher than 9-11.

          Spanish flu deaths estimated at 50 to 100 million. Compare this to approx 17 million soldiers and civilians killed in WW1.

The temperature here in south-central Iowa (which happens to be slightly south of Rome, Italy) is 3 F/-16 C, as of 6:35 am CST, according to the United States Weather Service. Their forecast low for tonight is -23 F/-35.5 C. Their forecast high temperature for tomorrow is -11 F/ -24C, and their forecast low for Wednesday night/Thursday morning is -18 F/-28 C. Those might not be impressively low temperatures for, say, Saskatoon, but they are for south-central Iowa, where the historical average high and low for the days are 30 F/-1 C and 12 F/ -13 C, respectively.

      What they eff do they need a 5.56 mm assault rifle for? They will not kill a moose and barely kill a deer. I guess it’s back to euthanizing them with their Ford F150.

      1. Scar, especially the rangers in Nunavut, a 5.56 won’t do much to a polar bear, or a grizzly or even a decent sized black bear.

        What in hell do conservation officers even need military assault weapons for, do they get attacked by crazed hunters on a regular basis? I can see the need for a hunting rifle as I’m sure they run into dangerous animals fairly often, so buy them a 30-06 from Cabela’s for about $1200, and a Leupold Vari-X 2 scope for about another $600, they already carry pistols, so now they’re properly outfitted.
        Do these guys like to play “soldier” too,like the SWAT teams?

          1. To Don and others, the conservation officers generally cannot call for police backup that is closer than a few hours away, and sometimes they run into some pretty rough characters. While not stated in the article by CBC, I seem to recall that these fellows are supposed to provide some backup if needed by the Mounties. This is not southern Ontario with its population density.

        3. The boys in the arctic use 5.56 (.223). Ammo is cheap and widely available. They use it on everything including polar bear.

          Nobody is taking 1000 yard shots like they do on tv.

      This is an over-the-top and completely unnecessary decision. What are these guns going to be used for? Dispatch of injured animals? They already have firearms for that purpose as well as shotguns and side arms.

      Wood pussi’s everywhere used to be decent guys but once they were armed they forgot why they were hired and developed an in your face attitude. They have more powers than the rcmp and it is a very unpleasant encounter afield when you are stopped by them. They have lost all respect. Arming them with firearms that look like assault rifles will do nothing to regain public trust.

    2. I suspect he would have a lot of company with 70 errors in his log book. I witnessed a lady pull out from a stop sign directly into the path of an SUV and someone, her passenger, was killed. After a short trial she was convicted – and hold on – her sentence was a $50 fine for advancing from a stop sign while unsafe to do so. My apologies to Kate but an East Indian in Saskatchewan who dumb luck placed 30 people in his path is going to jail for too long for a crime that likely rates a $500 fine.

        Build a backyard swing that collapses and hurts a child. If you are a regular person it is bad, if you are a registered Engineer it is potentially career ending and life ruining. Many other examples are also relevant.

  22. contingencies and utility disruptions? this just in:
    I designed a means to provide lighting in my place in the event of a prolonged power outage,
    from stuff I learned as an electrician’s assistant.
    the whole thing came to me when my boss told me the trick of ‘pushing’ voltage *into* a receptacle.
    I have a 1000W no name gas powered AC generator in the shed, and by luck a receptacle to send the voltage into the house.

    here’s the setup:
    1st step, main breaker off.
    2nd step all other breakers off except a select few (more on that)
    3rd step, disconnect or switch off all devices, appliances etc on the circuit to the shed.
    4th step, use the male-to-male patch cord, plugged into the generator and other end plugged into the shed O/L.
    this puts voltage onto that circuit and thus onto ONE of the bus bars inside the electrical panel.
    5th step, find another circuit in the house common to that bus bar (easy to do, all odds and all evens line up with all other corresponding odd and end # circuits) with mostly lights, unplugging and switching other appliances.
    now fire up the gas generator.
    6th step, switch on lights, radio, etc up to but not exceeding the wattage capacity of the generator as needed.
    this gives me lights and contact from the outside world.

    neat eh?
    when the power comes back on, shut off the generator, unplug the patch cord etc, main breaker on and all other breakers on.

    the key is the dandy little trick about *pushing* voltage *into* a receptacle.
    also key is documenting all the steps and circuit numbers. and flashlites. always the flashlites.
    if I had a voltage conditioner device I could even run the furnace to keep us all warm, but that I dont have.
    gotta resort to the firepit and/or BBQ for cooking heat.

    kinda looks like Im ready for a LIEberal future eh?

I did a similar hack after Snowtember in Calgary a few years back; the snowfall split a backyard tree, bringing half of it down on the overhead power feed from the house to the garage (and on our poor apple tree, which has since recovered). I built a male-to-male adaptor to energize the garage from the back deck receptacle so the garage door motor would work.

  23. The first thing you do is throw the main breaker. Very important. If the main is ever on and you are feeding power (pushing) into the panel it travels outside your house and into the grid. Some poor SOB working to restore the power could be killed.

    I have the trap shack set up for long term outage. Of course your only as good as the amount of gas you have for your genny.

    If the power goes out for a year or more I have a plan for that as well. It wouldn’t be pretty.
