Stagnation Nation

CTV

General Motors will soon be announcing that it is closing all operations in Oshawa, affecting approximately 2,500 jobs, sources tell CTV News Toronto.

More to come…

Yes, more to come.

The Supreme Court of Canada has finally catapulted this country into the modern age of securities regulation — a decision that could have direct implications for the federal government’s major policy initiatives on gender diversity and the environment.

The top court’s green light for a unified, pan-Canadian securities regulator to govern the country’s financial industry ends an 80-year struggle between the provinces and the federal government. […]

The groundbreaking decision on the centralized securities regulator could also help fast-track the federal Liberal government’s major policy initiatives on the environment and gender diversity.

h/t Grumps –  “You WILL be green. You WILL be gender balanced. You WILL definitely  want to do business somewhere else 🙁 “

We need a new country.

  1. Maurice Strong’s dream of de-industrializing Canada coming true in one term of PM Butts and his dummy.

As far as GM is concerned, ha, ha!

  2. “We need a new country”
We are in the process of getting a new country and it will be called Canazuela.

  3. Progressivism Trudeau style. After all like refining our own oil, buying cars made in Canada is “uneconomical.”

IOW, another abysmal failure to support free enterprise, on the contrary, they destroy it. Another shuttered business and industry.

Soon we’ll all work for Bombardier or the dinosaur media, or the only industries that will be left over after a Grit failure redux …

IOW “big” business which only survives on our taxes, er subsidies, er market support, thanks to largesse from the “commission.”

  4. At this rate, the Liberal Party of Canada theme song for the 2019 election should be Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”:

To the sound of the beat
    Another one bites the dust
    Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
    Another one bites the dust
Hey, I’m gonna get you too
    Another one bites the dust

Which industry will the Liberals wreck next. Only subsidized industries will survive.

  5. So the securities regulator will likley insist that company boards be carbon-neutral and gender-balanced because Prinz Dummkopf says so.

Andrew the Scheep will, no doubt, entice voters will the prospect that those boards will have alphabet people who’re in between as well as disciples of a certain religion of “peace”. Yup, ol’ Andy’s sure going to be a clear alternative to Prinz Dummkopf, won’t he?

  6. so were are all the Trump bashers now. We have idiots for an electorate!!!

    unDork, calling unDork!!!!

  7. It’ll be revealing to keep track of which companies that publicly supported the carbon tax for political reasons are now moving their operations and headquarters to jurisdictions without a carbon tax for economic reasons. Theory vs reality. Virtue signalling vs the bottom line. Progressive economists hardest hit.

    1. well LC, I for one would not be surprised if there is some pay back to this. Trump may just have a hand in this because the Turd and his big mouth after the G7 party. Maybe Trump is helping to take the Turd down!

      G SorASS hardest hit:-)))

      1. Perhaps. As a followup though, GM now says they won’t close for another year. It’s looking like a shakedown timed to coincide with next years federal election. “Give us money or Oshawa gets it!!”. If GM gets a bailout then it’ll add fuel to the western alienation fire.

  8. Note that at the end of the CTV article it refers to the Oshawa plant having had 40,000 employees at one point.
Is it a good guess that the 2500 union jobs that are set to be lost are dependent upon 1000’s of nearby jobs that supply the plant, and that a portion of those 40,000 jobs have simply been outsourced to the surrounding communities? … so that the Oshawa plant is more of an assembly centre for whichever auto parts those 40,000 people produce?

The local employees rated the worksite #4 on the Indeed work website,
Since 1999 GM has awarded the plant with more quality and productivity awards than any other GM plant.

I’m going to guess that PM Imbecile Trudeau addresses this tomorrow, and someone from the fed gov’t “will be working on a solution”.

Because it’s not Alberta, and those are largely UNIFOR union jobs.

  9. This is too perfect. I wonder how long it will take Canadians to get an education in economics from the school of hard knocks…since they didn’t seem too interested in learning anything before voting last time around. Very sorry to hear about anyone losing their jobs…as an Albertan it’s something I’ve seen far too often the last 3 years. Here’s hoping Canadians can get a grip on the basic mechanics of how an economy works before the Liberals sacrifice too many more jobs in Canada.

In the meantime…Enjoy the decline! 🙂

  10. I hear Justin Trudeau and Gerald Butts are on the way to the Oshawa area to see if they can speed up the closure, see if anyone needs a ride to the airport etc.

    1. In Canada to vote Conservative is to postpone the inevitable and to vote Liberal is to invite the inevitable.

  11. If I were to choose two entities most responsible for this closure it would have to be Unifor and the politicians they either own or support. Ontario legislated away whatever competitive advantage they may have once enjoyed such as low cost energy thanks to Butts and then Wynne and Unifor did what all private sector unions eventually do best – destroy the jobs of their members. The Spawn and his recycled Butts the green priest clinched the deal.

    1. I wonder what part the increased cost of electricity played in this decision.

Oh well, at least we will always have pot.

  12. Economics or the smell of blood in the water.
Could this be GM taking advantage of the current government going into an election year? The media just got a bribe, and the posties just got their wish of arbitration, Bombardier got theirs, so now GM wants a cut while they still can.

Dats a niz auto plant in Oshawa we gots an ita be a shame if we has ti shut it down now wudnt it, unless youz cud ah “subsidize” it like ya did wid da media.

  13. Memo: To whom it may concern. In order to comply with federally mandated hiring and employment policy. You will be able to meet your allocated quota by informing the Department how many and of which “oppressed” minority group you are deficient. Suitable and prior approved candidates will be sent to your Human Resource office to present their credentials.

Achieving the requisite number of affirmative action red stars on your file will allow you to continue to receive the electricity, heating, water, road surfaces, rail line and communications licences required to stay in business.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy ! (or else)

*(the glorious leader formerly known as Just in)

  14. Well, the unions have exactly the government that they deserve. Ontario always insists on voting Liberal; welcome to the national energy program you inflicted on the west.

Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, they will all be following GM’s lead soo enough. When they came for the oil sands, CAW was silent, because CAW did not mine bitumen. When they came for the auto jobs, I cracked a bottle of my favorite rum. And celebrated.

  15. And you know what, Unifor, the other government employee unions, they will be silent as well; because they do not build cars and they think their pensions are secure.

  16. Chrystia Freeland jettisoned a chunk of the dairy industry so this wouldn’t happen.

Evidently there were bigger priorities in negotiating the USMCA. “…the agreement helps strengthen Canada’s identity and culture, and an independent Canadian media. The cultural exemption, which helps safeguard 650,000 jobs in cultural industries, has been protected.”
    https://vancouversun.com/opinion/op-ed/chrystia-freeland-the-usmca-is-a-good-deal-for-canadians

  17. Kevin

Well, there should be celebrating in Ontario today.

Under Just-in tRUDEau and his LIEberals another problem was solved in causing Global Warming/Climate Change. First the oil and now auto sector …. what more do Butts/enviroMENTALists want.

Besides, without Canadian based oil, why do we need new cars. It is cheaper to buy foreign oil, since the “tRUDEau Carbon Tax” will not apply to it …. and Central/Eastern Canada love to support Blood Money Oil and enviroMENTAL non-standard production, over Canadian oil. It would probably be cheaper to buy an American car now.

    1. Canadians will soon be broke, no money, no cars, no food, no heat, nothing. The end result of socialism.

  18. The Turdeau and Moroneau believe that:
higher income tax + higher business tax + CO2 tax + higher electricity prices + higher property taxes = more business

Justin studied literature and never worked a day in his life. Bill Moroneau ran a human resources (i.e overhead) company and never made anything in his life.

Then we have Jagmeet (the two Rolex socialist) who’s economic ideas are to multiply Turdeau’s taxes by 2.

    Venezuela here we come.

  19. A national securities regulator to actually regulate securities might be a good idea. To mandate “carbon auditing” and “vagina counts” at the Board level simply ensures that business goes to where it is welcome.

Meanwhile, and sorry to continue to beat the drum, the only hope for rationality is Max’s party: https://www.peoplespartyofcanada.ca/

  20. Just listened to Jennifer French the NDP legislature member from Oshawa whining on the radio. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Jennifer – the auto workers union voted to support the NDP and federal Liberals. Thus they voted for:
    a) higher income tax
    b) higher business tax
    c) CO2 tax
    d) higher electricity prices
    e) higher property taxes
    f) lots more regulations
The Liberal government policies are to have even more of the above. The NDP say the Liberal plans don’t raise taxes enough.

Jennifer now you see the results. Business goes where it can make money.

Before we lambaste business for trying to make money, I note that pension funds are often the largest shareholders in these companies. And before I get flamed to death – yes I agree that executive bonuses are far too big.

    1. Now Gerry Dias is ranting about Oshawa. Hey Gerry, you supported all of the higher taxes listed above. You get what you reap.

Oh, you bemoaned shareholders… did you include union pension funds? They are major shareholders. You want to kiss your pensions good-bye too?

Take a trip to Venezuela Gerry. Your NDP friends called Venezuela a great example of successful socialism. That is the future you are creating.

  21. The Wee Groper Trudeau will give them all jobs rolling joints, why are they complaining they all vote NDP/Liberal/Conservative Communist. Canada loves her Communists and that is a fact. They are getting what they voted for, now on to the next plant any car plants left in QuebecNation. Oh wait call a meeting of all the Local Indian Chiefs and Elders and Trudeau can consult them and have a smudging ceremony. Then there is the Multicult crowd, get them involved with a farting and tapdancing routine. Maybe he needs to change his socks again. I think maybe right now, he doesn’t know whether to wind his watch or run to piss. Probably buy the out like he did the corrupt media and the pipelines. He will blame TRUMP. Canada is toast.

  22. Sock’s promise has come true, carbon taxes do create jobs, just not in Canada, GM announced that they will be building more electric cars but the Oshawa plant is not suitable. Well played GM, Trump will be pleased.

  23. They are also closing 4 plants down in the US. Oops, there goes the narrative!

Simple fact is these jobs are obsolete, no matter how much Trump rages about it.
