Police fired tear gas and used water cannon to disperse protesters in Paris who are angry over rising fuel costs and President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies, the second weekend of “yellow vest” protests that have caused disruption across France.
 

Several hundred protesters had converged on the Champs Elysees where they faced police sent to prevent them from reaching the nearby presidential Elysee Palace.
 
Some protesters sang the national anthem while others carried signs with slogans saying “Macron, resignation” and “Macron, thief”.
 
For more than a week, protesters clad in the fluorescent yellow jackets that all motorists in France must have in their cars have blocked highways across the country with burning barricades and convoys of slow-moving trucks, obstructing access to fuel depots, shopping centres and some factories.
 
They are opposed to taxes Macron introduced last year on diesel and petrol which are designed to encourage people to shift to more environmentally friendly transport. Alongside the tax, the government has offered incentives to buy green or electric vehicles.

I still have my own reflective vests from living in the UK (though I don’t believe they’re not a legal vehicle requirement there – a reflective road triangle is though and I still have that too). I think the vests are a great idea personally. I still have one in my car and, because I live way out in the country, I use the other for walking the dog in the evening.

The Americans had 100,000 troops in Fort Drum, NY, as their response to the separatist insurrection in Quebec. They don’t tolerate instability near their borders (witness Panama, Grenada, etc.). Mobilizing our army likely stopped an invasion. As I said, the only thing Trudeau #1 did right.

    Seeing how 73% of the French support the protests (against Macron) I would say Harper’s comments look pretty accurate. How long can Macron hold power with a 20% approval rating. Even Trump is over 50%.

            At present, I’m in Ontario and though I like it here, I can muster no sense of any particular identification with it. I’ve lived across Canada; I’ve also enjoyed my time in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Québec but none of these have ever made me feel anything more than a plain old unhyphenated Canadian either.

        In Ontario the cost of electricity has become utterly affordable for the rural poor. Are there riots? Nobody is working, because the companies all left for China. Are there riots?
