Employees of the two companies united in our mission of “energy for people.” When I retired four years later, Encana was our country’s largest energy company and also the largest of all Canadian companies by stock market value. My dream of building a Canada-headquartered energy company, invulnerable to takeover, had become a reality.
 
I could never have imagined that, a dozen years later, the company would decide to export itself.

  1. It appears the experiment known as Canada will soon be drawing to a close. I don’t know what Alberta is supposed to do. Either everyone has to move to Quebec and learn French, or Ontario and learn Deadbeat. Either way, we will all starve and freeze together. HURRAY!!!!

Given the wreckage the provincial Liberal governments have done to the central Canadian and Maritime economies, Western Canada had been the only evonomic growth pole for the nation.     1. The Maritimes have now been reduced to living off government handouts and boondoggles (e. g., AECL’s heavy water plant in Port Hawkesbury) , thanks, largely due to Liberal policies for at least the last 50 years. But which region of Canada also unanimously voted Liberal the last election?

      A prosperous western Canada is anathema to Liberal Ottawa. It has been Liberal policy ever since PET became PM to destroy western Canada’s economy (“Why should I sell your wheat?”), break any sense of independence and self-sufficiency, and reduce us to begging like the Maritimes. Out of gratitude for its overwhelming generosity, we in the west would be expected to continuously keep voting Liberal. After all, one shouldn’t bite the hand that one is fed by.

      PET only succeeded in damaging us. Prinz Dummkopf wants to finish what Daddy started, aided and abetted by Buttshead, who hates a prosperous western Canada for his own reasons.

  4. And the depressing thought is, he will be re-elected. After another 4 years of this, Canada’s economy will be moribund, and it will be too late. Changing direction and re-building our economy to what it was would take decades, if even possible.

    1. So what’s wrong with a 40 cent dollar anyways? Who cares if imported food prices double, energy costs increase, and the standard of living falls off the cliff? TruDOPE can just run YUGE deficits and print tons more of funny money with no ill effects, right, right?

  5. I worked for years in the Piceance Basin in NW Colorado as a geologist. Encana and Williams were the big dogs in that gas-prone basin, which has been relegated to second tier status by the shale revolution. I enjoyed working with professionals from both companies.

    It’s part of business, especially in commodities, for business cycles and changing subsurface realities to decimate companies and entire industries. It’s inexcusable when the carnage is due to idiot politicians and the Luddite masses to whom they pander .

  6. If this means a dramatic reduction in GDP, that more than anything will put the binders on his spending habits, as it will also impact the amount of taxes that can be collected by the federal government.
    Socialism doesn’t work because of this feature.
    Hopefully the lenders send the message soon that the federal government doesn’t rate getting credit from anyone other than those looking to liquidate federal assets.

  9. The fact that Canadians have not taken to the streets is proof enough that citizens can be ‘managed’. Capital is fleeing the country across the board not just the energy business. Consumer debt is 170% of income. Over 60% of people 55 years and older have not saved more than $50,000 for their retirement.

    When John Mauldin out of Texas features Canadian debt as a rationale for shorting Canada you know this country is on the cusp of a serious setback. Unsustainable spending by consumers and their governments will ultimately cause massive inflation. Government social promises will/cannot be met. Corporate taxes are not competitive will world rivals especially the USA. Trump is effectively drawing most future North American investment to the USA. I no longer invest money in Canadian companies unless they have most of their revenue coming from abroad.

    Canada is not a real country and hasn’t been since WW II. When the inevitable economic collapse happens the country will break up quickly. Accountability is a ‘progressive’ nightmare and that is coming.

  10. Notice that the high Priests of green theocracy always put a distant deadline on their goal of the utopian moment of carbon free existence. For example, BC’s Premier Horgan announced today that BC will only allow emission-free vehicles by 2040. I say do it all now. Given that there is no alternative technical reality that would allow such a move, bring it on now, shut down all enterprise, non golf cart transportation and expose the green priests for what they are, virtue signalling poseur assholes.

    1. Thanks for mentioning this. The GreeNDP policy is full of holes to be exploited. These jokers have no fundamental understanding of economics or the free market.
      #1, no matter what quotas the GreeNDP establishes to Car dealers, “10% of cars sold will be e-cars”, they still can’t force consumers to buy these electric toys. They ignore the reasoning, that manufacturers lose money on every e-car they produce, and, most of all, the GreeNDP has no jurisdiction over the manufacturers.
      #2, the GreeNDP just endorsed Alberta Car Dealers to sell ICE cars in perpetuity to BC residents.
      #3, they didn’t ban ICE vehicles either, although I wouldn’t want to give them any ideas.
      You can’t fix stupid with these ideological communists.
