Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

When I went school, “Nationalism” was a term used for everything belonging to the government not a type of xenophobia.
A socialist government would nationalise a corporation – i.e. take it over – and usually without paying for it. Or, in the case of Pierre Trudeau, pay ten times the worth just to take it over (Pacific 66, Petrofina and Gulf) and enrich some party supporters within the corporation. In Venezuela and many corrupt African countries, business was simply seized; i.e. nationalized.
Chang, the leader of Nationalist China, was for controlling Chinese life and business. When Mao took over he added more brutality to the mix. Same with the Nazis; their party platform was about controlling the population.
Since the left doesn’t want its true intent to be exposed it constantly changes tactics and terminology. The left just recently decided that nationalism was a term for anti-globalism and therefore their new derogatory term for those of us who won’t knuckle under to their position. Not that long ago, the left had deemed globalist a derogatory term. But that was when corporations wanted to go multi-country and populations would remain free.
Everyone remembers the evil Walter Gordon and George Grant. How insidious. Put Mel Hurtig on trial immediately.
And, where is Maude Barlow hiding? Oh, the sheer magnitude of the conspiracy, with Americans buying everything.
How can nationalist Trump be his own outgroup? Just asking. IOW, Macron hasn’t a clue, and French voters agree.
Ah, George Grant….
When I was a freshman undergrad more than 40 years ago, I was required to take an English course. I selected one that focused on prose. I don’t remember much of what we studied, but we did have to read passages from his Lament for a Nation. I recall that I wasn’t impressed by what he wrote and, in fact, considered it excruciatingly awful. If his objective was to make me a Canadian “nationalist” (as per PET), he failed.
What I remember from all that is the businessman E.P. Taylor being quoted as saying, “Canadian nationalism? How old-fashioned can you get?” I believe Grant described him as a “continentalist”.
But that was a very long time ago.
Yup, When you look back, what a crew of pompous, insufferable bastards, eh. “They” were going to set the standards and the criteria for what it meant to be a Canadian.
Shammy, it’s small things, and often unconnected to position people acquire, that usually define a persons character. And macaroni marrying his much older school teacher was a signal most ignored. Macaroni is and immature, non-adult, just like Just-In. Totally incompetent for the job.
the Trudeaus are still living off the money from the petro Canada deal.
The globalists tell us nationalism leads to wars. Globalism will lead to global war.
if not for Canada the US and the allies macron would be speaking german.
France … Let’s see,
– NATO parasite, a fair weather friend at best, despite two military bailouts after being overrun by fellow Europeans.
– while hypocritically bleating about globalism, don’t allow refugee claimants to land, pending hearing, as Canada and US do.
– my favourite, at the heart of obscene agricultural subsidies distorting markets for favoured farmers, when not starving people.
– flip allegiances and the stroke of a cheque. Witness their ditching of Israel for Arab Mirages.
– and, utterly clueless about the utility of the nation state, being a supranationalist.
Good point, Trump should listen to him; he is wise. All hail international socialism, where you’re free to say what they think.
It’s pretty bad when one can look back over the last 50 years and realize that the last French president who was worth anything was Charles de Gaulle and he was a twit.
Exactly!
Mais, non, non, non. B A.
Je me souviens …”Vivre Québec.. … Vivre le Québec Libre!” Ce n’est pas trop populaire avec le reste du Canada!
Heh, heh!
(Too bad they didn’t leave)
We should have a referendum. But ask the rest of Canada “Should Quebec be kicked out of Canada”
YES means
– no more Turdeaus
– no more Bombardier
– no more dairy cartel
– eliminating the biggest equalization payment
It might pass in a landslide
Yes!
joe, and give them Andy 2% Scheep as a going away prize!!!!
No, the referendum should be on kicking the Quebecois out of Canada. They each get a Canadian passport valid for not more than one year, a one-ticket anywhere, and two free suitcases.
(My regiment fought for that land.)
N’oubliez pas la conquête.
Separatism is crazy, but that does not make it wrong to acknowledge that Quebec was brought into British Canada by means of 50,000 cannon shot fired into a civilian town, followed by occupation, all of which was a tragedy for les habitants.
After all, the little people were not the threat to British Canada, their Crown was.
And the dairy bs has been foisted on the nation for Ontario farmers as much as Quebecois farmers, and in fact the Ontario dairy association was the group that instigated the change in dairy classifications that was a major cause of the recent trade friction with the US.
The French had it from the Indians (who fought amongst themselves over it) by right of conquest and occupation, we took it from them the same way. (And treated them better than they treated the Indians.)
Like proportional representation it’s subject to neverendums until the desired statist objective is achieved.
More political power for elites of course. The rest is rhetorical garnish.
Macron seems to be almost as stupid and as undeserving of the position he holds as the stupid tit, Juthtin… almost… Globalism has produced some of the most creepy and weakest “leaders”, ever known. Remember when Juthtins crazy, commie, Canada hating Father was also against “nationalism” (Canadian Nationalism) imposing his french language supramacist ideology (franco nationalism) while simultaneously dividing the population through his imposition of ethnic nationalism? Entropy is our Stwegnth, divide and conquer… Juthtins mentally deranged Father was proof that one can be militantly against certain and specific “nationalism” (Canadian) while imposing hardcore franco nationalism and ethno nationalism as tools to undermine Canadian Nationalism… the ability to be for and against nationalism at the same time. Is Juthtin and the Liberal Party forcing Trudopians to financially support propaganda outlets like CBC and CTV a form of “nationalism”…? is constant taxpayer funding of Bombardier a form of “nationalism”.. is bland expensive cheese and forced french “nationalism”…? In some cases one mans “nationalism” is another mans ideological tyranny… Having said that, Macron like Juthtin is a POS stuck to the bottom of George Soros’s left rear hoof.
Well that’s the comment of the year.
Wow! Well said.
Sean M, your comment should be printed and sent to both Just-In and macaroni. I’ll even pay to have it translated to French froggism for the macaroni.
Nailed it…..!
What others said. Well done Sean M. Nationalism is but another term that has been stretched and torn in different directions, depending on the lust for power narrative, like liberalism, progressivism (that hideous derivative of Marxism), personification (but I digress), democracy, fairness and of course justice. All can serve the fascist identity cause while mimicking liberty.
Just ask the Venezuelans. Or the Greeks. Or if Trump is stopped, Americans, and unfortunately with our sycophantic and unethical media – Justin time to $wreck the place and finish his father’s (un)intended consequence of breaking up the nation.
Yes, PET was considered a nationalist. Hardly a populist and his outgroup was outraged citizens to whom he gave the finger.

“Hey, I’m a nationalist and a globalist,” Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. “I’m both.”
“And I’m the only one who makes the decision, believe me,” Trump said.
1920, Warren G. Harding swept 39 of 48 states with 60.2 percent of the popular vote. In the months between that election and his inauguration, he gave 18 speeches (without notes or teleprompter) that described exactly what he was going to do to make “America First” (his slogan) and repair the damage done by Wilson.

“A time for greatness 1960” – U.S. presidential campaign theme of John F. Kennedy (Kennedy also used “We Can Do Better” and “Leadership for the 60s”).
“Let’s Make America Great Again” – Ronald Reagan
Make America Great – Clinton, Oct 4 1991
“Make America Great Again!” – used by Donald Trump’s campaign.

Are Macron’s superficial insights what passes for deep on the part of Europeans? I suspect thoughtful or original are too much to expect. It is intellectually dishonest and deceitful to conflate American history with European history.
It’s a travesty that American and Canadian lives were spent defending countries who, a generation later, long to be backwaters of a German Superstate.
I seem to recall that after the October crisis the Ottawa bubble used to make reference to the nationalists in Quebec because they didn’t want to offend Quebecers feelings by using the term separatist, or that by using the term separatist would by their logic lend credibility to the separatist cause.
Then along came Reform and upset a whole industry by advocating for the plan B.
Take it or leave.
But I digress.
The point is that the current crop of “betters” seem no more adept at reading the public mood than the crop of 1914 and 1937.
The current mood contradicts their fashionable policies and rather than heed the warnings they attack the message.
“I seem to recall that after the October crisis the Ottawa bubble used to make reference to the nationalists in Quebec because they didn’t want to offend Quebecers feelings by using the term separatist, or that by using the term separatist would by their logic lend credibility to the separatist cause.”
Actually, no.
Although all separatists are Québec nationalists, not all Québec nationalists are separatists. The key was always to keep the non-separatists (the majority) on side with federalism.
The leader of a country sermonizing on the dangers of nationalism is like Jeff Bezos lecturing us about the horrors of capitalism.
and now please stand for the NATIONAL anthem…
1) No. Macron has taken France in more or less a better direction. He’s made it easier to hire and fire. He hasn’t gone nearly as far or as fast as he should.
2) No, nationalism is not okay. Nationalism is another form of collectivism that sacrifices the rights of the individual for the ‘glory’ of the nation.
hay unDork, who’s definition of “nationalism” are you referencing. As usual, you are “unContext unDorking”
..No, nationalism is not okay. Nationalism is another form of collectivism that sacrifices the rights of the individual for the ‘glory’ of the nation…”
So sayeth your local Alinsky acolyte. BULLSHIT sonny.
Nationalism is very much OK. Being a Nationalist is about giving a Damn about ones own country, its culture, its people and its prosperity. Trump is a Nationalist – Trudeau, the Antithesis of a Nationalist. A crtochless Eunuch who could care less about his county of birth, its citizens & one who has no Fkn clue about its prosperity….like most Marxist “collectivist” (_i_)holes.
There’s really no rational reason to have an attachment to your country of birth or countrymen. They’re just people and there is no us.
Don’t confuse patriotism with nationalism.
National socialism is a form of collectivism not nationalism per se.
Unfortunately, what starts as populist doesn’t always end up that way.
Nationalism become insidious when elites take over, appointing themselves as the focal point of the state.
To buttress dissent, outgroups are scapegoated and persecuted – Jews, probably guilty white men not entitled to due process.
Why do you so confuse the two? The only outgroup I see is white males and the other fascists scapegoats of the left.
Progressivism, fascism and socialism, now there’s collectivism for you. Ideology is not linear; hope that helps.
“Nationalism become insidious when elites take over”
LOL no it’s another form of collectivism like all the others, and populism is just popular stupidity. If the merit of your ‘ism’ is that it’s popular, then wow is that ever vacuous and dumb.
States are just chunks of territory with a government in charge (or not in the case of Somalia two decades ago). There’s no more reason to be emotionally attached to them than your grocery store. The state-citizen relationship must be purely transactional.
?
jeezuz murphy unmebot.
better to hand one’s liberty and future prospects over to the globalists than deal with just the locals?
did they drop you on your head in the maternity hospital?
“Globalist”. There’s that word again, meaning nothing but ‘people who can read’ again. Yeah I’ll take them.
The world is not responsible for your ignorance. But, must you wear it as a badge, something to be proud of?
Globalism is collectivism is corrupt regimes is the default of the world (UN) is what we need to avoid like the plague.
The Euros, particularly the EU members, are expert at extracting concessions from trading partners for decades. In the case of the USA they do this with straight faces and then double down by having the USA pay for their NATO defense. They sit back with their socialist societies and pile on debt as they are not able to pay for the goodies they hand out. They think that their political ineptness is enlightenment. Europe is well on its way to another conflict as the ‘promises’ made by their governments will be unfulfilled.
