Now the best part of this “unintended consequences” story is that we, in the West, are at the tipping point where we are about to jump into the dust bin of history because of our good intentions, and the progressive liberals are pushing us to the edge as fast as they can.
The fertility rates are dropping around the world. Having kids just doesn’t benefit most people, so they’re not having them.

Pre-18th century, all urban settings had huge net population loss every year. Mostly the reason was disease, combined with the economic disadvantage noted above. All cities have always had large immigration from rural settings, mostly caused by rural unemployment. During the 18th century, for which there are very good population records, the unemployment rate in rural western Europe ran at more than 50%. In fact, this rural unemployment was a major cause of the French Revolution. England also went through similar political crises, but tended to export its unemployment to its colonies.
