A correction for the Captain, in defense of my wife … a lowly 1st Grade teacher in the … inner city.
First: No … her job is not intellectually challenging with a STEM kind of rigor. However, we laugh that she has a Bachelors of SCIENCE degree (Child Development, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), and I only have a Bachelor of ARTS degree (I’d rather not say, UC Berkeley). I am employed and licensed in a very technical field that makes our degree distinction something of a JOKE.
Second: Job challenge … I DARE the Captain to attempt teaching a 1st grade class of 28-32 inner city children 20% who speak no English, and 45% who speak some strange dialect which they claim to be English. Ten of his students will have slept 4 hours the night before, because mom’s boyfriend had some late night drug deals in the living room where the kids sleep. And five students who have severe mental and/or physical deficiencies (welcome to “mainstreaming”).
Third: My wife works her ass off for these kids. She TESTS them rigorously and routinely to assess their deficiencies and create targeted lesson plans. She runs several extracurricular learning enrichment programs (all online) which she monitors virtually 24/7 … she even listens to the kids practicing their lessons reading into a microphone headset (that we paid-for) in REAL TIME. Every paper, test, and homework assignment is reviewed, graded and returned to the children every 24 hours. My wife works most of the day on Saturdays, preparing for the next week. Unlike most leftist elite handwringers, my wife is IN the trenches, trying her best to equip these young kids with the tools they need to succeed in our society. Her job is NOT easy … at least the way she approaches it.
Is my wife representative of MOST teachers in her District? Sadly, no. Far too many of her peers are dead weight burnouts who simply like the vacation time. BTW … my wife has accumulated more than a full years salary in “sick pay” since 1999. She virtually NEVER takes time off. Crimeny! She already gets 2-1/2 months in summer and multiple LONG holidays every year. Many of her peers (if you want to call them that) are radical, leftist Unionistas whose motto is … “work to contract”. Yes, that is the Unionistas clarion call … leave school at 3:25pm and only correct papers during the allocated “prep period” (2x/week x 50min.). The Union is constantly battling for FEWER tasks, hours on the job, and higher pay. As far as I am concerned, my wife is entitled-to and has earned … higher pay. She is the most requested teacher in her school, and her kids (with a few “broken” exceptions) score high on their mandatory tests. We NEED to devise an accurate, equitable, way to PAY teachers who do their jobs properly and excellently. Sorry Cappy … your disdain for the teaching profession simply does not apply across the board.

From how I read it, it’s Kenji who expects a medal for her. And rightly so. It seems she isn’t just “doing her job”. She is doing a heck of a good job. I emphasize because my wife was a kindergarten teacher in Los Angeles before her retirement. Some years, she could count double digit native languages among her students. When someone is conscientious and doing well in a difficult job, you don’t just say waddiya want, a medal?
What if for years and years your boss never gave you a kind word, let alone a raise. What if the only thing he ever said was you are doing your job, and you expect a medal? With a sacrilegious coda.
You get medals for going above and beyond the call of duty to defeat your people’s enemies in war or save the lives of your own from their enemies.
Figuring out an innovation that would allow your boss to undersell the Chinese communists trying to destroy his firm and ruin him and you both—that’s above and beyond. Babysitting a few halfwit brats is not.

Correctomundo O’Bruin!! I am simply bragging on my wife for doing FAR more than her job. Because her “job” is what has been negotiated by her UNION, which includes her “right” to leave school at 3:25p every day, do NO work off-hours, refuse tasks like yard duty, or extra meetings called by the Principal … I could go on with the UNION cut outs. As I said … the UNIONISTAS motto is … “work to rule” (i.e. the work LIMITATIONS they’ve negotiated with the incompetent school board).
My wife would NEVER ask for any rewards for “doing her job” … other than the satisfaction of properly preparing her students for their next years work. I see it differently … I see her being in the top 5% of her profession. In any other profession, such an elite standing merits financial remuneration and perks. Sadly … teachers are all paid as though they are equal … they’re not.
And I forgot to mention that my wife was nominated ONCE for Teacher of the year, which she did not win because she’s not the correct “color”. Seems there is a rather distinct movement among educators that “Black” children should only be taught by “black” teachers. Funny thing is that the black parents who request their children to be in her class don’t see her skin color, but see her results (and love for their kids).
Nice to hear your wife was a Kindergarten teacher, and I am not surprised that she encountered so many different languages in the LA basin. What’s the statistic I just read? That 47% of American households speak some language other than English in the houshold? Shocking.
This. And I say this with several teachers in the family. I can understand gripes about insufficient classroom/school resources, and whatnot, but this dyed-in-the-wool concept of “I deserve this money, regardless of competence” just blows my mind. If I, working in the private sector, demanded of my employer that I be paid the same regardless of my work product (quality or quantity) or punctuality or hours of work/absenteeism or attitude, and that I be guaranteed raises based solely on degree qualifications and time-in-grade, I’d be laughed out of his office and then promptly perp-walked from the premises. And my company is pretty slack on the HR front as it is. The sense of entitlement from teachers and their unions (and other similar service unions) never ceases to blow me away. And that leaves aside all the discussions about curriculum and indoctrination, which are additional sore points.

She’s busting her ass because she thinks she can help those brats. You need to tell her the simple truth that most are not worth trying to help, and her life is far too short to spend trying when she could be doing something far more useful—like raising YOUR children.
Does she want to help them? Here’s what she ought to be doing: catching them, neutering and spaying them, and sending them back where they came from.
She gets a good student, does her best. The student goes to college, becomes a radical. Does their best to destroy the teacher.
1. My wife went back to teaching AFTER she raised our kids. She actually never taught after graduation and obtaining her teaching credential. We married young, immediately started our family, and she stayed home to raise our kids. So she is a re-entry woman worker.
2. Please don’t be a racist. I have no doubt that MOST of her children will have successful lives and become solid citizens. However, I do play a yearly game with her class photo … I call the game … “guess which kid will go to jail first” … just based on their “look”. I have to admit that it isn’t too hard to pick out which kids give my wife the most trouble with their bad behavior. It’s usually written on their face (and body language). My guesses are about 90% correct.
3. Ha! Ahh!!! … Yep, I also have no doubt that MOST of her kids will grow up to be radical leftists … who will sue the school district for forcing them to have a “white” 1st grade teacher … and demand reparations … forcing her school district into bankruptcy … again.
My wife and I are truly colorblind as skin color is an entirely irrelevant measure of a fellow human. Racism has no place in my world, whether it emanates from whites or blacks, browns or Reds. But I am NOT culture-blind … the gansta-culture of irresponsible black males, welfare baby factories, and anti-traditional American culture is poisonous.

Stevie – You’re too kind, and yes my wife is a Saint. I quite enjoy Cappy, if for no other reason … that he has a Trumpian story-telling style of sticking it in your eye! But he has a certain myopia that you have correctly identified. I doubt that he would call my Bachelor of Arts Degree as rubbish … because I create and engineer REAL THINGS for a living … but there are quite a few other BA’s as legitimate as any BS.
A friend of mine once related an article he read that said most all jobs in America could be learned (on the job) in about 6-weeks … which begs the question what good are all our fancy degrees. Most Engineering Firms use computer programs and follow more or less cookbook formulae for their work. Hate to say it, but a reasonably intelligent third world immigrant could be taught to run the programs and analyses on most projects. STEM degree be damnned. And now, even the high tech firms are hiring kids directly out of HS … and training/turning them loose.
IMHO … A 4-year college degree should BE a well-rounded Education that teaches the student how to think, analyze, and create. After that … you can be taught any number of trade-school lessons that translate directly to a real job.
However … things like xxxxx-Studies is just teaching HATE, and should be immediately BANNED from every accredited college.
