I was wondering when this was going to happen. I heard hints of this when, nearly 40 years ago, I sat through a lot of “apartheid is evil, Mandela is a saint” Sunday sermons.
I guess the people in that congregation who agreed with that the clerics preached are feeling mighty proud today. Divine justice will, at last, be visited upon the white oppressors.

My next door neighbor moved his young family here shortly after the ANC took power. He is a great asset to our community moving/opening a roofing company here in CA. In the early nineties the government of SA sent teams of young male and female foreign affairs staffers to many Western nations in an attempt to explain their position on Apartheid and advocacy for a paced transition to greater black participation in government. I attended such a party in the GTA at that time. Although earnest and genuine, these young adults were obviously very troubled and frightened. Their love for their country was plain to see. Sadly, their message was not particularly well articulated and more emotionally driven than objectively reasoned. They have been proven right in their political views and forecasts. I hope they are safe.
My wife and I made a three week driving tour of S. Africa just fifteen months ago – one of the best trips we ever enjoyed. We started in Cape Town, driving to Port Elizabeth and then by air to Durban, where we picked up another vehicle to drive up the east coast to a private game reserve on the edge of Kruger Nat. Park.
Some brief observations: Cape Town is more beautiful than Vancouver. It also has a growing black middle/business class, well dressed and driving newer vehicles. We did not visit any ‘townships’ as we felt doing so was more exploitive than educational. We did not EVER hear white Afrikkan’s speaking badly or disparagingly of their fellow non-white citizens. We did however, hear whites, blacks and coloureds speaking badly of the ANC and the direction they were taking the country.
At no time did we feel uncomfortable or threatened in any part of the country. However, on arrival (after dark) at a guest farm in the Karoo region, we were greeted by an armed, uniformed security guard who helped provided 24/7 security to the elderly white (German) farm owners. Unlike ADT security here that provides window stickers and a monitored alarm system, when you see and ADT vehicle in S. Africa, it usually contains two burly men wearing combat boots, camo and Kevlar. The signs for every security company say “Armed Response”. It’s true that in places like Durban, houses are surrounded by walls topped with either razor wire or shards of glass and accommodations generally have a ‘panic button’ for guests.
Reading the local (English) newspapers, it seemed that while their were frequent crime reports, it mostly involved gangs within and around townships. Like Latin-American drug lords, they weren’t necessarily considered all bad – many of them plowed money back into their communities and the violence was often directed at internal enforcement or rival gang members.
We got lost more than once and I recall stopping for directions at a supermarket in a mid-sized town. I was the only white in a supermarket sea of black folks and yes, I did get a few odd looks. However, people were polite and helpful – the manager taking me across the parking lot to point out the way for us.
My wife and I have joked that we’ll need to stop traveling because every country we visit (Turkey, S. Africa in particular) seem to go downhill after we’ve left. Of course we could suggest that’s no different than Canada, either.
I have dear South African friends that have been attempting to bring family to Canada for years. So far they have succeeded with one niece. At no time did we feel uncomfortable or threatened in any part of the country. However, on arrival (after dark) at a guest farm in the Karoo region, we were greeted by an armed, uniformed security guard who helped provided 24/7 security to the elderly white (German) farm owners. Unlike ADT security here that provides window stickers and a monitored alarm system, when you see and ADT vehicle in S. Africa, it usually contains two burly men wearing combat boots, camo and Kevlar. The signs for every security company say “Armed Response”. It’s true that in places like Durban, houses are surrounded by walls topped with either razor wire or shards of glass and accommodations generally have a ‘panic button’ for guests.
Reading the local (English) newspapers, it seemed that while their were frequent crime reports, it mostly involved gangs within and around townships. Like Latin-American drug lords, they weren’t necessarily considered all bad – many of them plowed money back into their communities and the violence was often directed at internal enforcement or rival gang members.
We got lost more than once and I recall stopping for directions at a supermarket in a mid-sized town. I was the only white in a supermarket sea of black folks and yes, I did get a few odd looks. However, people were polite and helpful – the manager taking me across the parking lot to point out the way for us.
My wife and I have joked that we’ll need to stop traveling because every country we visit (Turkey, S. Africa in particular) seem to go downhill after we’ve left. Of course we could suggest that’s no different than Canada, either.
I have dear South African friends that have been attempting to bring family to Canada for years. So far they have succeeded with one niece. They are willing and capable of ensuring anyone they bring will not be a burden on Canada . Without exception the numerous ones I have known have been a benifit to our country. Frankly , some of them our scared by the tone of our present federal government. It is a movie they have seen before.

It’s not just the farmers that will suffer when this is implemented. Like everywhere else, a lot of South African farmland is mortgaged. When the government seizes it, for the most part they will be seizing a bank’s land. As bank balance sheets implode when it becomes impossible for the debtor to pay, the banking system will collapse. These idiots will wake up one morning to find their bank account either empty or locked up.
