  1. In the US, In the short term that would be great, but in the long term not so much. A sane opposition is required for the health of the Republic as well as for the health of a liberal democracy.

    In Canada, there is illness.

    1. However, the speaker, Lionel, does bring up an interesting theory, that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a Trojan horse.

    2. Ken exactly, I just brought that up in a conversation yesterday. We have out own nut jobs on the right side of the aisle.

      1. Aha!! NME000 ……. another conspiracy theory!! Now, Cortez is a Trojan Horse planted by
someone to be named later. However you do speak from intimate personal experience with your claim of “nut jobs” of the right and usually you are found desperately trying to lead the parade.

Ah, yes! Good old Jew-hating Looney Tunes NME ……….. behind every theory there is a dark conspiracy.

  2. IMO, Lionel is a crotchety old wannabe Socialist. Yet, Even he realizes just how toxic Socialism is to the seventy to eighty percent of sane voters, and that it is electoral suicide at this time. But that is where the “energized Democrat base” is right now, with Bernie and Occasionally Cortez.

Maybe the US two party system is due for a shakeup after 150 years? Maybe the Socialists will take over the Democrat Party? Maybe the NeverTrumper GOP Establishment can get together with their Uniparty Establishment Democrat pals and take over one of the existing parties, since they both are unified in their love of deep pocket donors and Trump-hate? Maybe PDT can find enough people that believe his nationalist and more importantly, his so far successful solutions are a rational political platform and take over the Republican Party? Who knows?

In the meantime? Please, Please run more Democrat Socialists.

  3. Socialism may be an economic theory but, since the Russian Revolution, its implementation has always, ALWAYS resulted in enormous poverty, suffering, and death except for the very few who are in control.
    – International socialism was implemented in Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela.
    – National socialism was implemented in Germany.

In THEORY, socialism seems so wonderful. But the numbers of people who have died under its IMPLEMENTATION is in the hundreds of millions.

The reason? Socialism requires the force of the state to sustain it, resulting in forced labour, that is, slavery. You, as an individual, are never able to enjoy the fruits of your labour and use it for your own prosperity. If you, as an individual, refuse to give the fruits of your labour to someone else, the state will come and get it.

This is why one of the planks of the Communist Manifesto is the income tax, that is, the state will use its power to force out of your hands some, if not all, of the fruits of your labour.

    That’s Socialism in its implementation.

Those who do not wish to accede to the wishes of the state are either re-education, gulaged, or dispensed with forthwith.

    1. Socialism is not an economic theory, it is a political theory, that the state controls all things. Economics does not “exist” in such a state, which of course is why socialism leads to disaster.

      1. “Socialism is not an economic theory, it is a political theory…..”

Actually, it is both an economic and political theory. Same as Capitalism and Communism and Libertarianism and all the other isms.

One factor which is making socialism appealing is the fear that automation …… everything from self driving vehicles and robotic manufacturing to artifical intelligence ….. will make it impossible for capitalism to benefit “the little people”. How will they earn a living when their labor is no longer needed? We see a bit of this already in the proposals for guaranteed income for all.

I won’t be surprised to see a rise in population control efforts and eugenics advocacy. Others are betting on colonizing the moon and Mars.

        1. Since the mid 1800’s, we have seen a lot of “automation”, resulting in a society more prosperous for more percentage of people ever in history.

Trains made interstate commerce possible, and in a way was “automation” replacing horse drawn carriages. One crew can deliver the contents of dozens of boxcars to wide flung and otherwise remote towns. Most who benefited were “little people” in those towns, and the entire country became more prosperous.

The assembly line did not result in the demise of steel workers. Quite the contrary. Henry Ford paid them three times the salary, and he almost literally put a car in every garage, which truly revolutionized American society, and put most people into “middle class”. The “Life of Riley” portrayed the easy life of an assembly line worker in the 1950’s.

Washers and dryers, and refrigerators and gas stoves and ovens, and indoor plumbing all are in a sense “automation”, and drastically reduced the drudgery of housewives. So much so many of them started to work in offices.

Speaking of offices, memos and directives went from hand copies to carbon copies of typed copies, to however many copies from printers linked to computers with Word files. That did not eliminate secretaries, only made them more efficient and able to handle the every increasing volume of distributed files.

So historically, automation has made life better and easier and richer for the ordinary “little” people, which encompasses most Americans.

          1. @OldBruin
I don’t deny what you have written is accurate. But I think you have misinterpreted my statement. I simply said that FEAR of automation is ONE factor in making socialism appealing.

Is the fear well founded? Possibly. Two big factors are in play. (1) A very large and growing human population and (2) “Smart” automation growing smarter at a pace such as the world has never seen before.

I won’t be around in 50 years so I won’t know how things play out but I do have fun speculating on the possibilities.

      2. bingo maximus.

socialism attempts to defy the ‘laws’ of economics which are surely as strong and prevalent as the pull of gravity.
it all starts with 100% ignoring human nature (selfishness in all its variations) and attempts and always eventually fails completely to replace this human nature with the ‘new man’.
defy gravity, defy evolution, defy common sense, defy human nature, defy unforeseen consequences, defy history, defy anything and everything not listed in Kommunist Manifesto.

    2. How could socialism not end in misery? Its proponents make fatally flawed assumptions based on Marx’s ideas:

      1. Marx (intentionally?) misunderstood the meteroric rise in standards of living coming out of the industrial revolution and instead saw oppression. Result: prosperity for all is attacked as “hyper capitalism,” especially if the “rich” do relatively better. Lifting people out of poverty is seen as unjust oppression that only statism can “fix.”

      2. Because of the above, Marx couldn’t fathom a powerful & prosperous middle class. Result: insulting hardworking people as deplorables while bribing them for their votes.

      3. Marx had to be doing some serious drugs (tincture of opium perhaps?) to believe the elites in the dictatorship of the proletariat would hand over their power and privilege because society was not “just.” Like global warming, a just society is always in the future. Result: statist parties who’s end is power not policy, that pretends to want to benefit the “workers.”

      4. It fits the media construct of elites deigning their wisdom on the great unwashed. Result: a hopelessly incompetent and biased media conning us about social justice.

Just like Marx. Progressivism is not (true) liberalism, it is Marxism that recognizes power must be seized by the so-called revolution. Marxism, because of what it is, not the people supporting it, will always result in misery, death and war.

There are no “nicer” Stalins or Hitlers out there. Or Obamas for that matter. They think they have a right to rule you and you should be grateful; otherwise you’re mentally ill, an enemy of the state, or both.

To all the Trump haters who call him a Nazi while extolling violence themselves:

The Jews ( and gays, and gypsies etc.) were marginalized and mistreated in Germany before, not after the Nuremberg laws.

The Trump “Make America Great Again” is the Jewish star dog whistle of bigotry.

But it suits corrupt cretins like Maxine Waters, so they go with it.

Like I tell people, if it weren’t for double standards, the left would have no standards at all.

    3. International socialism was implemented in Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela …
not just Russia but the entire USSR, and eastern Europe behind the Iron Curtain (such as Poland, Czech Rep, Slovakia, and Hungary, some of the most anti-Communist countries now) and Cambodia (resulting in the Killing Fields), Myanmar, Nicaragua, and most sub-Sahara African dictatorships (worst examples being Uganda (previously the garden state of Africa) and Zimbabwe (previously the breadbasket of Africa). And yes, all of them resulted in enormous poverty, suffering, and death.

Before that, before Marx, there were the Plymouth Colony (one third of the people died the first year due to socialist policies and a cold winter, but fortunately that only lasted one year) and the French revolution, which ushered in Robespierre’s Reign of Terror.

And no, not even in theory is socialism wonderful. It denies each human being his individuality, rights and aspirations, and only accept the masses as tools of the collectivist state. Even in the Scandinavian countries, considered socialism havens, with confiscatory taxes, the people have no aspirations to improve their lot, and most suffer from ennui, relieved only by alcohol and drugs. Many who do not find the latter helpful resort to suicide.

      1. and remember robespierre had the guillotine used on HIM.
        as did also monsieur guillotine.
they never ever ever ever friggin LEARN from history.
all part of a ginormous humahn ego, coupled with powah from votes or any means necessary.

“be careful what you wish for” sumptin I learned about 50 years ago . . . .
(which is why I’m still here, better shape than my peers, got my own place, having lots of fun shooting at leftist thought like a skeet shoot)
        etc etc.
        time for my workout !!!

  4. This big campaign against Plastic Soda Straws is as stupid as their campaigns against Fracking/Drilling their Keep it in the Ground just as stupid as banning Chrlorine that Greenpeace wants or us all going Vegan over this Global Warming/Climate Change nonsense Modern Enviromentalisms form of Stupidity

    1. hey sputtering blower, you haven’t lost your touch. Soon you will again be completely off topic every time!!!!!

      1. How is he/she off topic? You are the one who constantly goes off on tangents. Projecting are we?

  5. Looks like this “Lionel” person has the sum total of his reading on display. A stark contrast after the Shapiro / Weinstein interview and, quite frankly, hard to endure. He has an odd habit of walking everything he says back including his opening volley.
Cortez in no way represents any political departure from or shift in the Democratic party. She merely embodies an unsophisticated political unmasking. She is pretty with big doe eyes and shiny white teeth. She will go very far with these assets alone. People will overlook her vacuous stupidity. She is clearly ambitious beyond her abilities and, just below the surface, bat-5h1t crazy. In fact if you substitute the crazy with lazy you have Trudeau.
Lionel is wrong. Unapologetic socialism is the new Democratic party. Ocasio-Cortez (Hecho En Socialismo) is the new poster child.

  6. Cortez with the hyphen, represents the mind set of the majority of Canadians as well as damn near 50% of Americans. Both countries are heading in the wrong, and a very dangerous direction.

  7. David, well said and my exact thoughts. I have had discussions over the years, and even till last summer, with some of these “classical” liberals, and NO, they are not batshit crazy lefties. Fact is they are quit often farther to the right than some of todays so called conservatives

  8. In a capitalist world you give 1,000 people a dollar each. After awhile, one person has $500, a few people have $100 and the rest have nothing.

The socialists see themselves as offering a way to give everyone back their one dollar. In walks a socialist government and everyone has their dollar back. Problem is, after awhile, one person has $500, a few people have $100 and the rest have nothing.

The big difference between capitalism and socialism is that the people who control socialism cannot accumulate $500 on their own.

In this video Lionel states that in a capitalist society someone buys the rights to the pancreatic cancer gene and charges whatever he can get for its use. This would not happen in a socialist society where such genes are for the benefit of the people. Problem is, in a socialist society the gene would never be developed in the first place because people generally don’t work like dogs for the benefit of others.

    1. LOL !!!
the only girl I ever had a date with in high school articulated this simple but spot on theoretical situation in my gr 10 geography class.
give them all a buck and watch how the bills coalesce in a finite number of locations.

howcum that isnt in ‘Das Kapital’?

    2. Capitalism is not a zero sum game.
Henry Ford invented the assembly line for his Model T Ford, and paid steelworkers three times what they previously got. Of course steelworkers streamed into Detroit to work for him. As a result, Henry Ford damned near put a Model T into every garage. And what had been a status symbol for the filthy rich, almost overnight gave middle class status to 90% of Americans by the freedom of movement ownership of a car confers.

  9. What is the definition of insanity in today’s society? Is it an actual increase mental illness for some unknown reason or is it delusions inspired by an educational system with no values and aided and abetted by an equally valueless media. The only common denominator is the Marxist dream of destroying society. Those who believe in nothing will fall for anything, and in fact look for what turn out to be empty nothings.

David Thompson’s “Modern Manners’ thread is but one of the countless threads we have had here that could be filed under an ‘insanity’ file folder. What appears to be a societal drift toward an unobtainable socialist political and economic utopia that has failed everywhere it has been tried is just more manifestation of this ‘insanity’.

Recognition of a thousand diverse genders and shooting all kulaks will not bring utopia or cure and satiate the insanity.

  10. My title was poorly written. Sorry about that. Lionel isn’t the Left on Display, it’s Cortez I was referring to.

  11. He is right about at least on thing… If these clowns did not exist….Trump would have to Invent them….
The return to past mistakes is a construct of insanity…. I do find her arm motions interesting

The Canadian rush to embrace 17th century British Common law.. Debtor Prisons for the Children of their fathers debts.. Yes that is the INDIAN grievance industry… You must apologize & pay for you fathers actions/inaction.. How Lawyers & Courts that believe in justice can turn a blind eye to the obvious is amazing.. The brain dead wallowing in white guilt… I didn’t ask to be white,.. but I won’t deny my culture built this society.. F*** off

  12. One of the other aspects of socialism that people don’t mention too much is this: The state owns you.

    It owns you, you personally.

The state is the slave-master, the plantation, the collective and YOU are an owned human being. Your life is not your own. You are the property of the state.

  13. final thought for the day:
any time an in-yer-face types starts bytching about how MY ‘white’ culture enslaved/exploited/wtfever theirs, my response, which has worked EVERY FRIGGIN TIME, is to counter with words to the effect:
“stop bytching about what MY culture has done to YOURS in the language of MY ancestors. use your OWN language or STFU.

honest to gawd. it ALWAYS works. it is such a punch-in-the-solar-plexus moment quite frankly, even *I* cant come up with a retort.

    y’all have a gud ‘un !!!

      1. To historybuff:
You must be confused by the reply. Sorry, I was thinking of someone else. Yeah, that’s a good answer to cultural appropriation.
FWIW, English isn’t the language of my ancestors either.

  14. Ken, could be. She beat an established, long term Democratic Party male candidate, and she’s not exactly informed. Some of the old guard in the Democratic Party are worried, but she may appeal to university students.
