Request for Investigation of Deceptive and Unfair Practices in Advertising and Marketing of the “Autopilot” Feature Offered in Tesla Motor Vehicles (pdf)

      Dear Chairman Simons:
Two Americans are dead and one is injured as a result of Tesla deceiving and misleading consumers into believing that the Autopilot feature of its vehicles is safer and more capable than it actually is. After studying the first of these fatal accidents, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that over-reliance on and a lack of understanding of the Autopilot feature can lead to death. The marketing and advertising practices of Tesla, combined with Elon Musk’s public statements, have made it reasonable for Tesla owners to believe, and act on that belief, that a Tesla with Autopilot is an autonomous vehicle capable of “self-driving”.

Consumers in the market for a new Tesla see advertisements proclaiming, “Full Self-Driving Hardware on All Cars.” They are directed to videos of Tesla vehicles driving themselves through busy public roads, with no human operation whatsoever. They see press releases alleging that Autopilot reduces the likelihood of an accident by 40%. They also hear statements like “the probability of an accident with Autopilot is just less” from Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk. Or they hear him relate Autopilot in a Tesla to autopilot systems in an aircraft. Such advertisements and statements mislead and deceive consumers into believing that Autopilot is safer and more capable than it is known to be.

“EXCLUSIVE: Liberals ignored green energy advice that could’ve saved Ontarians billions, lead engineer says

It’s been nearly a decade since Ontario Liberals passed the Green Energy Act, an ambitious plan to rid the province of coal-fired electricity and make Ontario a powerhouse in renewable energy manufacturing.

But the lead engineer responsible for designing and implementing a key component of the plan – the FIT and Micro-FIT programs that saw billions of dollars in green-energy contracts awarded to solar and wind companies – tells Global News in an exclusive interview the Liberal government ignored expert advice that, if followed, could have saved Ontario electricity customers billions of dollars in unnecessary spending.

He also says the government never provided details of public promises about how much the plan would cost Ontarians – even though he asked the ministry responsible to provide this information two months before the Green Energy Act was passed.”

“Say hello to Justin Trudeau, the world’s newest oil executive

    Bill McKibben”

“The Canadian prime minister presents himself as a climate hero. By promising to nationalise the Kinder Morgan pipeline, he reveals his true self”

“In case anyone wondered, this is how the world ends: with the cutest, progressivest, boybandiest leader in the world going fully in the tank for the oil industry.

Justin Trudeau’s government announced on Tuesday that it would nationalize the Kinder Morgan pipeline running from the tar sands of Alberta to the tidewater of British Columbia. It will fork over at least $4.5bn in Canadian taxpayers’ money for the right to own a 60-year-old pipe that springs leaks regularly, and for the right to push through a second pipeline on the same route – a proposal that has provoked strong opposition.

Stop swooning over Justin Trudeau. The man is a disaster for the planet”

“That opposition has come from three main sources. First are many of Canada’s First Nations groups, who don’t want their land used for this purpose without their permission, and who fear the effects of oil spills on the oceans and forests they depend on.

Second are the residents of Canada’s west coast, who don’t want hundreds of additional tankers plying the narrow inlets around Vancouver on the theory that eventually there’s going to be an oil spill. And third are climate scientists, who point out that even if Trudeau’s pipeline doesn’t spill oil into the ocean, it will spill carbon into the atmosphere.

Lots of carbon: Trudeau told oil executives last year that “no country would find 173bn barrels of oil in the ground and just leave it there”. That’s apparently how much he plans to dig up and burn – and if he’s successful, the one half of 1% of the planet that is Canadian will have awarded to itself almost one-third of the remaining carbon budget between us and the 1.5 degree rise in temperature the planet drew as a red line in Paris.

There’s no way of spinning the math that makes that okay – Canadians already emit more carbon per capita than Americans. Hell, than Saudi Arabians.”

  5. Notley’s former “Oil Sands” advisor in the Alberta government is now declaring that she expects additional vigor to be added to the protests against TransMountain now that the Federal Government is purchasing it. These associations between the Notley government and the radical environmental movement need to be kept front and center between now and the next election in Alberta – to keep people aware of how the NDP are completely antagonistic to one of Alberta’s core industries. Also we need to continue to remind the country of the ongoing failure of the federal Liberals to enforce the rule of law and give industry confidence that investments in Canada are worthwhile. Nationalizing our industries will lead to Canada = Venezuela (even if you think it can’t happen here).

    “The Post-War Order Is Over”

“And not because Trump wrecked it.

The 75-year-old post-war order crafted by the United States after World War II is falling apart.

Almost every major foreign-policy initiative of the last 16 years seems to have gone haywire.

Donald Trump’s presidency was a reflection, not a catalyst, of the demise of the foreign-policy status quo. Much of the world now already operates on premises that have little to do with official post-war institutions, customs, and traditions, which, however once successful, belong now to a bygone age.”

Mired in Uncertainty: Made in Canada by PETPOT’s Ye Olde Liberal Partry.

“By contrast, U.S. producers are restarting previously idled operations and investing in new ones amid a period of record confidence”

    …-

“Canadian steel and aluminum producers mired in uncertainty as U.S. tariff exemption ends Friday

By contrast, U.S. producers are restarting previously idled operations and investing in new ones amid a period of record confidence”

““We’ve been operating in an environment of uncertainty for the last couple of months,” he said. “Clearly a series of 30 day extensions to exemptions does not provide the certainty you’d want to run significant businesses.”

By contrast, U.S. producers are restarting previously idled operations and investing in new ones amid a period of “record confidence,” said John Tumazos, a New Jersey based steel industry analyst.

The price of hot-rolled steel has risen above US$890 per tonne, up from $745 per tonne prior to the tariff announcement and nearly double the price before Trump was elected.

Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel has announced plans to restart one of two blast furnaces and rehire workers at its Granite City Works outside St. Louis, Ill.

India’s JSW Steel unveiled plans to spend $500 million to modernize an existing plant in Texas and build a new one.

And Arkansas-based Big River Steel is considering a $1.5 billion facility expansion at an existing manufacturing plant in its home state of Arkansas, according to reports.

Tumazos credits the buoyant environment and rising prices to the steel tariffs, as well as the Trump administration’s move to cut corporate taxes to 21 per cent from 35 per cent.

“This is a unique period in terms of optimism,” Tumazos said. “And Canadian producers are benefitting from higher prices too. Prices are the same both sides of the border.”

  9. I have seen ontario ndp tv ads, liberal ads, but have I seen a pc ad, chirp chirp
Another blown pc election looms, I would rather have liberal wynne back in power then ndp horvath.
If the pcs blow this one I will never vote them again, iam 62 voted conserv. Since iwas 18, Latest polls which are only good for dogs and drunks in the nite
Have a virtual tie. Pcs have 2wks to mount an offensive you want to win you better put the gloves on and come out
    Fighting. Blitz tv, radio.

    1. It is very concerning that the PC’s could lose this one. Ford was not the best choice to win a general election, but I think he would be ok in power if he goes along with existing advice and expertise. NDP would be a nightmare. Like you, I would rather see the Libs than the NDP. Hopefully it won’t come to that and the NDP star starts to fade.

NAFTA is going to end badly. Canada is no match for the U.S. and certainly no match for Trump. He throws the ball right at your head – something were not used to.
Get read for a run on the $. Everything is lining up for a rugged year. Interest rates will rise 2 or 3 times before year end. The housing market will have a stiff correction. It’s probably recession time.
