  1. I didn’t follow the link,but I disagree with this,”those that love Scheer and the Conservatives.” Conservatives I know don’t “love” the Party,Scheer,Harper, or any other political entity,they simply SUPPORT the Party and people they believe will do a better job of running this Country.

    Making decisions based on emotion is the realm of the Left and we’ve seen too many disastrous consequences when people choose what feels good in place of what’s best.

    So,NO, we don’t love Scheer, we know he will be a better PM than Justin “Sunny Ways” Trudeau and his merry band of high school kids for all the obvious reasons.

      1. Same here. I’ll hold my nose and vote, the promise is good for one vote and conditional on what passes for conservative behavior between now and the time of vote.

        I am so glad we did not elect that Bernier guy, he might have been a conservative libertarian who would never sign up on the glowbull warmenign scam but at least Sheer is not from Quebec.

      2. When Scheer did that. That was the “We’re Doomed” moment for conservatives, and until he’s gone I’m afraid we’ll be stuck with “the boy” for the next few years. I think come the next election a lot of conservatives will stay home. Scheer does not inspire.

  6. Agree with the general sentiment in the comments. Scheer is milquetoast and only mildly conservative, and he stole the win from Mad Max by promising the milk cartel that he’s maintain their license to kill. Bernier would have been far superior.

    1. At this point, I also think Bernier looks particularly good. Having said that, Canadians are a timid lot and Scheer is just the sort of person they might dump the Liberals for. His appeal is that he is not particularly threatening. Of course there is an up and a downside to that. For the time being I am happy to let Scheer give it a go. People start to pay attention around election time, and Scheer is both articulate and personable, so he may do ok if they are fed up with the Liberals. I think things are moving well with respect to “fed up”. This is a totally awful govenment, so one or two more misteps and many more of their supporters might wake up.

    2. I supported Mad Max in the leadership contest. If it were Max at the helm during all Mr. Dressup’s stumbles, bumbles and stammers, we’d have heard from him every day. In the meantime, Scheer is… somewhere. And no, Max wouldn’t have bought into the climate scam. I’m not hopeful that Scheer isn’t another Joke Clark.

    What to do about the political divide between eastern and western Canada is to separate.

    1. Yes, and I think it was in Reader Tips today that someone posted a link to an article which recommends separation and amalgamation with Montana. I thought it was a very good idea.

    1. Will give a pointless x to a conservative candidate if no Libertarian on the ballot although in the middle of Ottawa its Lieberal or eNDP because the stupid is strong on the sheep in these parts.
      The west should separate and the east can go to hell.

  11. As I recall, Prince Pixie Dust’s father coined the term “two solitudes” to describe what (formerly known as) Canada was during his residency at 24 Sussex. That concept was one which he gladly encouraged and rewarded, so why should PPD be any different?

    1. With all due respect,”Two Solitudes” was a book published in 1945 and written by Hugh MacLellan, a McGill professor who came from Nova Scotia. ( Pierre Trudeau was only 26 years old then and would have been still studying at university. He avoided the war as long as he was in university, as per Canadian Conscription Laws. He probably read the book. It was all about the French versus the English in Ontario and Quebec. They think they own Canada, being, our first citizens and all) Pierre would not have coined the ‘solitudes’ statement, although I remember his using this in a quote, & having read the book personally. He was too busy, in his own world, saying cheeky things, like, “Just watch me”, about calling in the troops on the FLQ.

      1. You are correct, of course. I figured that the term existed prior to PET, but I wasn’t sure what the source was. I first heard him use it while I was in high school nearly 50 years ago, so I probably thought he was the one responsible for it.

        But, in the context in which he said it, I’m sure he meant that Quebec was, is, and will always be a world unto itself and that English Canada, particularly the west, must be subservient to it.

        That sentiment was echoed by Sophie’s husband when he said in a French-language interview that the only good prime ministers came from Quebec. With that statement, he denigrated, among others, Macdonald, Borden, and King.

        1. I saw that French with English subtitles interview that you just referred to BA and, I too, was also mortified that the previous Anglo-named P.M.s were so dissed by Justin Trudeau.
          Even more mortifying, in this same interview, was when he said that they can no longer let the West, control everything! He was referring to Harper and Preston Manning saying, “The West wants in”! What the money we send not good enough? I agree with many here, time to say bye, so long, adios amigos!

          P.S. I like your name change from sewer rat to Rupertslander it makes me smile because you know your history. Also you can, with a name like that, can still ‘slander,’ like the rest of them! My bad if you weren’t sewer rat previously. Rupertslander seems so dignified, like the statements you make.

            After the Hildabeast called the residents in flyover country deplorables, insulting people like me. I added that term to my ID.

            The “sewer rat” came after one of Red Rachel’s cabinet ministers referred to Albertans like me by that term in the legislature. I was proud to be considered to be one.

            Now I use Rupertslander because I don’t see much of a future for western Canada in Confederation. The title isn’t mine, though. Some other contributor to SDA coined it a few months ago and I rather liked it because of its history.

            Rupert’s Land also symbolizes enterprise, initiative, and perseverance. Radisson and de Groseilliers had the idea to move deeper into what’s now North America to find furs. They first proposed it to the French government and were turned down. They then approached the British Crown with it, which saw opportunity instead of folly.

            The original Rupert’s Land was only that region which had rivers that drained directly into Hudson’s Bay. After the Hudson’s Bay Company amalgamated with the North West company, Rupert’s Land covered much of what’s now western Canada.

          1. Radisson and de Groseilliers….wow talk about being flung back some 50+ yrs…I remember reading about their fur trading adventures..some of the first books I ever read and thoroughly enjoyed.!!

            It should be obvious to anyone who has lived in the west, especially Alberta that the EAST could give a shit about us as long as the coin keeps coming in..strange then that they would so nonchalantly attempt to kill the goose that feeds them. Ideology besting $$ – who knew.?

            Yes Deplorable’s…McKenna damn near used that terminology just recently..I called that bimbo on it – no reply of course. We were screwed over Lrg. with PET and his NEP, that took 10 yrs to get past…this time it will take 15 – I don’t have that kind of time. SEPARATION is the Answer and amalgamation with Montana…not a bad idea.!!

    1. Cleavage is a term used in materials science, referring to what happens when two adjacent sections of a crystal separate. A cleavage plane describes the direction and extent of that separation.

    Now it looks possible that it may be moving somewhere in Quebec with the rise of the first right of centre party since the sixties – the CAQ.

  21. The real division in Canada is not by province, nor by east and west; it’s by urbanite pseudo-intellectuals and sophisticates and the rest of Canada in all its ordinary working-family glory. The former wants to save the planet, get touchy-feely with diversity and sees obsessing about “gender issues” as vital national concerns. The latter is too busy working, raising kids and paying a mortgage to pay much attention to such things. More’s the pity, because those urbanites are soaking the taxpayer and crippling the national economy in pursuit of their nonsense ideals.

    Incidentally, the affinity of Québec for our Dear Leader is by no means as assured as you might think, particularly if you’re not a French speaker and therefore not able to keep tabs on developments in the province except through what has been translated and packaged up for you in English. People there act in their own interest (well, duh) just like people in Alberta do. They can turn – and have turned – on a dime and abandoned the Liberals before.

  23. One of the major sad parts of all of this and based on all the economic news in our major resource sectors Canada has experienced since 2015 is that Maurice Strong’s dream of the deindustrializing the west is coming true in Canada and the people are sleeping.

Certainly many public servants who, let’s face it, have little or nothing to do with industry, construction or infrastructure, understand one thing, and one thing only and that is their guaranteed pension. All three levels here in Ottawa hoover resources at incredible rates, count the days until their pension max is fulfilled. Some state that MORE public servants is an economic plus. Some have told me that private industry is essentially evil. I do my best to just grit my teeth, so I don’t remove theirs.
      Shorter version: Ignorance is Bliss. Or is it Strength.

    The energy east pipeline was about money. The deal some quebeckers have raking in the dough dealing with 3rd world despots. Lots of money changes hands when about a million bbls of oil a day are imported up the St. Lawrence.
    The energy east pipeline threatened that cozy arrangement.
    The military is the same. If no money goes to the military those resources can then be diverted to quebek by way of transfer payments. They are a have not province you know.
