Y2Kyoto: Climate Mauling

Susan Crockford;

Polar bear specialists Ian Stirling and Steven Amstrup knew they didn’t have a valid argument to refute my paper (Crockford 2017; Crockford and Geist 2018) on their failed polar bear survival model (Amstrup et al. 2007), which their responses to my International Polar Bear Day (27 February 2018) Financial Post op-ed revealed to the world…

So when ignoring me didn’t work – or, more accurately, when the world started paying too much attention to me, by their own admission (Harvey et al. 2018:3) – they teamed up with Michael Mann, Jeff Harvey, and Stephan Lewandowsky (all with previous form attacking colleagues who don’t share their views) to publish an academic paper attacking my scientific integrity. In the words of Terence Corcoran, I was “climate mauled.”

  1. Someone MUST pickup the AGW file & bring an end to the total bogus claim by Mann….Need a white knight with a Grand Jury…

The personal complaints are non- starters, but intent to deceive for financial gain is worthy of a term in the PEN

  2. I’m not a polar bear expert but from what I read polar bears slow their metabolism during the winter because food becomes scarce much like other bears hibernate. The only difference is that polar bears don’t actually sleep for extended periods during that time. So if food is scarce during the winter and plentiful during the summer wouldn’t global warming, by extending summer, be good for polar bears? Of course silly experts find mammoth carcasses in melting glaciers and so assume mammoths were ‘ice age animals’. I wonder if any one of those mammoth experts ever thought about how much forage a mammoth would need to stay alive and how they think the mammoths lived on glaciers where there is no forage available.

  3. Jean Auel, in her series starting with “The Clan of the Cave Bear” did – if I remember correctly, have the mammoths living just south of the ice. So the beasts could have been “ice age” but actually living where there was real grass. The carcasses found would be of the unfortunate beasts who were caught by an early winter and managed to be preserved.
It should be mentioned that Ms Auel was writing about a “hiccup” in the last Ice Age, when the ice retreated but then returned. Humans fled south; the animals were not always so fortunate.

  4. I used to participate in the Audouban Societies’ Winter Bird counts … who knew? … a hardcore conservative is a bird watcher? Well, suffice to say that the “counting” techniques are on the estimated side of estimating an estimate. Extrapolations of a single sighting.

If the Polar Bears are DYING because soccer moms don’t carpool quite enough … then show me the carcasses. Show me the skeletal remains. They should be quite easy to find, what with the melting, ice-free, Arctic landscape. Show me PROOF of the population decline. No estimates, or extrapolations allowed.

    1. I’ve done the bird count as well so there have been 2 conservatives among the Tilly hat crowd.
I have had biologists explain the estimating process and have worked in the Arctic doing bird studies. They are difficult to estimate because they move around a lot and can be in one habitat one day and hundreds of miles away the next.
The Arctic is a huge landscape of water, ice and land. Polar bears are constantly on the move and are hard to study. They also like human flesh!

  5. Just mention the name Michael Mann, and we know the situation…..
You are being stalked, in a sense.

    1. I like John Stossel. I recollect a blurb he did about the frequent east coast hurricane damage and the insurance business and the drive to use disaster relief funds to rebuild exactly where the next hurricane will flatten things.
and another time he showed the huge contrast between how public lands were [not] maintained vs how privately owned but publicly accessible lands WERE maintained.

  6. I’m quite sure that somewhere in the mundane and esoteric science world, real scientific inquiry exists but what is published in virtually all popular culture and what passes for the mainstream of academia and the rest of the institutional left has the smell of corruption from groupthink and rent seeking at the unprecedented and lucrative altar of green theocracy. The symbiosis between hysteria originator / reinforcer (state funded “scientist”) and hysteria pimp/ enabler (politician) is now likely the most pervasive pathology of western civilization.

  7. Susan Crockford hasn’t questioned the alleged decline in Arctic ice or any of the shibboleths that pertain to the warming cult.
She has merely shown that there is no decline in polar bear numbers and for that little step outside of the reservation she has been savaged.

    1. Yep. I’ve been following this on WUWT, and that was one of the things that occurred to me yesterday. At no point, as far as I can recall, does she challenge any other aspect of the “orthodoxy”, other than the polar bear population. It’s a disheartening mixture of bad (or lack of) science, lack of ethics, lack of professionalism, dogma, pricked pride, Dunning-Kruger, no leg to stand on, fear of losing the gravy train, and good, old-fashioned sexism. Feel free to add if I’ve missed any.

And then there’s the behaviour of the “journal” and its “reviewers”, with their own lack of professionalism and so on. Disgusting.

  8. I spent two weeks in St. Anthony Newfoundland over March 2018 during which there was an unprecedented number of polar bear sightings – over 29, compared to the yearly average of 5-6. The bears ride the ice flows south from Labrador to munch on the abundant seal population. The bears were fat and healthy looking according to the locals. When the winds change direction the bears hop the ice and head back home. St. Anthony is nowhere near the Arctic.

    1. You just reminded me … uggggh … of what I saw on the Nat.Geo. channel last night. There was a PROMO for a Nat.Geo. program with Katie Couric (new hair color, new face) promising to deliver … The TRUTH … and whatnot to Nat.Geo. viewers. What a shame. I used to RESPECT The National Geographic Society. Now … it is the repository of Global Warmists, gender blenders, and the Alt.Left
