Blowout 213

Our usual eclectic mix of energy and climate news stories from around the world assembled by Roger Andrews

Donald Trump’s imposition of solar tariffs gets the nod as this week’s feature story. Does it signal a dismal future for solar in the US or is it just a bump in the road? In other news we have US shale spoiling the oil price rally; Austria on the nuclear warpath (again); Toshiba spins off Westinghouse; a nuclear reactor that won’t melt down; Canadians back renewables; Australia will meet its 2020 emissions target but Germany won’t; Macron’s tainted climate charm offensive; the “Tesla of the canals”; battery storage in the UK – yes or no? Budweiser beer is now 100% renewable and how bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches are to blame for global warming.

  1. “Budweiser beer is now 100% renewable ”
    That would explain the color.

  2. Canadians Back Renewables over Job Creation
    …..says the headline.
    Toronto Star (Pravda North)
Yea my children have told me flat out, they want to breath air from China (prevaillng winds), while they stand in line for their welfare cheque as jobs continue to disappear in Canada. uhu.
    What utter Liberal (_i_)kissing Tripe.
We in the West of this country need to have a serious discussion on separation from the East.

  3. These “Blowouts” should be renamed “The Road to Serfdom Progress Report”.
Canadians should have been asked whether increasing the non-emitting component of our electrical production beyond our current 81% was worth doubling the cost to consumers and wiping out much of any remaining competitive advantage we enjoy in manufacturing. Ignorance is a critical factor in push-polling.
The UN report on “drying the planet” from GW ignores the reverse effects of desertification from increased CO2 in the atmosphere. Stomata efficiency of forest species is greatly improved with higher CO2, significantly lessening transpiration and therefore soil moisture requirements. In the UN just as in Trudeauopia, pimping hysteria is more in keeping with the programme.

  4. I think this is a masterstroke! Trump knows that imposing trade sanctions on foreign
imports gives domestic industries a license to steal. Solar panels are the biggest
hoax since the Piltdown Man. They could not exist in a free market without massive
    government subsidies.
If he couples this with a reduction or elimination of federal subsidies, the solar
scam collapses like the Ponzi Scheme that it is! I am one of those people who
understood Trump from the very beginning. I was in the industrial trades for more
than 40 years, and I remember these “Alternative energy” businesses cropping up
like weeds in the aftermath of Jimmy Carter. These things were designed from the
beginning to support the kind of crony capitalism that existed in Nazi Germany.
Their version of socialism permitted the private ownership of business but it was
highly regulated by the state, and it was corrupt from bottom to top. As evidence,
I give you pResident Obongo’s tossing 1/2 billion dollar grants to his cronies
and campaign donors. Every one of these companies went bankrupt within a year
because the owners took the money and ran. They were meant to fail because it
was never about producing PV panels, it was all about Ovomit throwing money at
    cronies and Democrat campaign donors!

  5. SM, Agreed; I just submitted my Alberta United Conservative Party policy poll, and they asked whether staying within Canada was a top priority. I suspect they would do better if they hint that separation was a possibility if (sorry, when) they take power. Freeze in the dark, E.B.’s, who block pipelines. Their proposal of an equalization payment re-evaluation was a given.

  6. Re: Trump’s solar panel Tariff … I expect to see a LOT more of this:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/technology/24solar.html
BTW … our local elementary school district put a massive array of panels of the roofs of all our local schools … and within a week they were ALL gone. All stolen. Nowhere did the district publish the TRUE cost of putting these things up twice … or the new security cameras they installed … or insurance premium increase. They have never published REAL monthly data (PG&E bills) to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of these wonderful “renewable” energy devices. They are on the roofs … to TEACH (brainwash) the children that solar panels are goooood mmmmmkay. Nevermind the $ COST to a school district without a dime to waste.
No more “dumped” Chinese solar panels. I guess Solyndra would still be in business if Trump were President … since cheap Chinese panels were blamed for their demise.
