Fighting over revenue while the street sellers are laughing all the way to the bank.
It is interesting to compare the proposed taxes on pot with those on tobacco and alcohol.
Why, pray tell, should potheads be spared the confiscatory sin taxes smokers and drinkers have to pay?
With absolutely nothing personal at stake in this issue, I just love to sit back and watch the making of the legalized marijuana train wreck!
‘Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has proposed a 10-per-cent federal tax on sales of marijuana
The Prime Minister’s proposal features a perfectly reasonable tax rate’
And hasn’t that always been one of the main arguments for legalizing pot; the government will receive the money that previously went to vendors outside the law. Human nature being the way it is I doubt that pot heads have any more inclination than the rest of us to fork over additional cash for their supplies just because it’s the ‘government’ doing the selling.
Another government monopoly with protected growers who cannot compete on production cost as more southern growers have that advantage. I will not buy dope stocks for ethical reasons but also because of production costs.
The truly ironic situation will be the number of citizens who will get high on dope free as doctors prescribe this drug. The push across Canada is for free prescription drugs. I believe they are already free in Quebec. Yup, that poor sister province with $9 day care, who gets $11 billion in Equalization, probably another $10 – $15 billion in smarney pork barreling will toke up at our expense.
Trans Canada cancels Energy East at a cost of $1 Billion. The ultimate sleeze factor as the Liebels change the criteria for approval well into the project app. Not to worry as this story will never see the nightly news. Do any citizens wonder why international capital is leaving Canada? I think not. Oh, Quebec led the charge on shutting down Energy East.
Canada becomes a bigger joke each day and consequently less relevant. At some point the West will wake up and realize how badly we are being taken. The unfortunate reality is that the more Westerners that can be put on government handouts the easier to will be to maintain the status quo.

Mind you, we have known for some time now that there is not much difference between the Mafia and the government.
It will be a train wreck…
Those that can, will produce at home: 4 plants with good LED lighting, ventilation, Hydroponics…easily good for a 1-1.5 lbs a crop…if ya know what you’re doing. Govt sold pot like in Ontario is simply not going to work…who in their right mind would buy from overpaid – under worked Public Servants sell an ounce (of UNKNOWN quality), for 200+ where you will absolutely HAVE to show ID and likely have said ID registered/noted whatever…? Laughable at best, particularly given the massive overhead the Ontario Govt Stores will have compared to your avg dealer. So Price will definitely be an issue and to be honest, I dont believe the Govt can be competitive period.
This whole gig is as I have said, particularly if all the other Provinces follow Ontario’s lead, all about CONTROL and a green light for ever more regulation – enforcement. Classic Marxist agenda.
I’ll stick with what I know, can smell and see before purchase.
What is interesting is that given governments reaction to vaping, they are concentrating on legalizing smoking MJ with no plans for edibles which at least eliminate the hazards from the actual smoking. The regulatory mentality is surely a retarded one.
I have no use for “True-Dope-ia”, or any need for said item, however, that being said; why would those who do, not buy from say the Hell’s Angels folks?
One thug is as good as the next, or bad for that matter.
As government now becomes a drug pusher, diabetics still have to buy their own life saving insulin and needles!
Where is the OTC market for regular drugs? Why can’t the Mafia and Hell’s Angels sell insulin at cut rate pricing?
Why shouldn’t drug pushers and pharmacists compete on a level playing field?!
So the government can hand out free needles, for ostensible ‘harm reduction’ but makes insulin dependent diabetics buy their own needles.
The Mafia and Hell’s Angels demand EQUALITY with low life pharmacists!
“Insulin abusers” demand cost savings and equality with drug abusers!
Cheers

“Mind you, we have known for some time now that there is not much difference between the Mafia and the government.”
I disagree.
The Mafia is far better organized and runs its commercial interests with an outstanding degree of acumen and management efficiency.
It is just about certain that the Ontario government will find a way to lose on the sale of pot and the taxpayers will end up subsidizing the endeavor.
The reason the Mafia is better run than the government is because it enjoys a governance model based on self interest rather than a continuously running popularity contest currently at the level of Junior High Class President.

Agreed … except … I have a question. Does Canada mandate “smart meters” be installed by the electric companies? Here in CA, PG&E has installed “smart meters” on every home. Therefore, it is effortless for the government (thru PG&E) to flag any and all residential energy usage which is out of the norm. It is effortless for the government to detect residential grow operations. I expect the government will zealously protect THEIR cash crop of new TAXES. Jealously, and zealously.
“Does Canada mandate ‘smart meters’ be installed by the electric companies?”
No. Not a federal matter. Depends on the province.
We have ‘smart’ meters in Ontario. This is one of the reasons that grow-op locations tend to clip the old ‘Do Not Remove’ tag and bypass the meter.
In older areas where electricity is run overhead, there have been instances of just wiring right into the hot lines up on the pole (better them than me).
Either way, it’s all illegal so the bad guys still sleep at night.
And yet no increase in violent crime or really any crime in states that legalized.
true stoners are too whacked to do anything. crime requires an effort.

Smoking cannabis DOES make people more violent: Project confirms for the first time that using the drug is the cause of crimes
