In the broadest sense, the appearance of a Catalan state would be only another facet of a slow dismantling process emerging all over the world, pushed forward – surprisingly – by globalisation. And on a smaller scale, there’s something specially Iberian and something European about Catalonia’s travails.

Subheading …
Globalisation was supposed to bring widespread uniformity and benefit. But it hasn’t addressed old grievances
“old grievances” … puhleeze! The negative spin on the natural state of human Tribalism (Nationalism) is just sickening, and ignorant. Face it, globalists … You Lose. The public (everywhere) is fed up with your cultural experiment.
I remember hearing 40 years ago that the superstate of the EUSSR would encourage substates like Catalonia and Scotland, for example, to cede from their nation state, breaking up the nation state and they just become provinces in the EUSSR.
It seems the plan is going ahead.
Catalan is the non welfare part of Spain. They won’t want to let it go. Look for arrests and/or vote fixing if they hold a referendum.
My prayers are with the good people of Catalonia. May they achieve their dream of independence. If only to inspire the downtrodden masses of La Belle Province who have had to prop up the rest of Canada since confederation. Who have had a foreign language rammed down their throat for years. Have had to endure running Canada because the rest of Canada is clearly unable to govern itself. I..I…can’t…keep…typing…through the tears
Indeed, Chris, a consummation devoutly to be wished.
And I believe now that the MSM knows that ‘national anthem protests’ are, oddly enough, patriotic, that football and hockey fans here should boo ‘O Canada’ when a French verse or Trudeau’s new English-language version is used, all accompanied by burning or otherwise defacing small Quebec flags as protocol has now changed regarding anthem-respecting with the MSM’s blessing.
About a year ago I attended a seminar by some economist or other in Calgary where the speaker posited that in the years to come we will see the rise of the city state – that increasingly people are affliliating with the city that they live in or nearby more than they do their province or country.
And that it was important that more powers/autonomy be given to these cities lest unrest with governance increase.
I think that this is indeed a symptom- a good one – of globalization. The generally free framework globally allows more independence locally.
Maybe they’re remembering this
Oath of allegience to kings of Castille (Spain)
We who are as good as you, swear to you, who are no better than we, to accept you as our king and sovereign lord, provided you observe all our liberties and laws, but if not, not.
J.H Elliot, “Imperial Spain”
I hope that Justin Trudeau is watching this.
… and the Scots.
The Republic of Western Canada, or, Cascadia.
Heh, Heh, heh.
My people was thinking about forming Independent States, but you white folks keep making the stat’ eskwo too good.
Are the Catalans tired of seeing their tax dollars go to the welfare sucking areas of the country? Do they feel underrepresented? They should separate then. Go their own way.
Kurdistan.

“Large numbers of people have taken part in a landmark vote on independence for Iraq’s Kurdistan region, amid growing opposition both at home and abroad.
Votes are still being counted, with a big “yes” victory expected.
Kurds say it will give them a mandate to negotiate secession, but Iraq’s PM denounced it as “unconstitutional”.”
Turnout estimated at 72%
Sanctuary cities are examples of that phenomenon. VDH describes them as being quasi-confederate. Too bad most are led by socialist or green assholes.
I’m currently in the eye of the storm, in Barcelona. While I have no idea of the outcome of the referendum, it would appear, to this casual observer, that passions are high and the majority – or the loudest – voice appears to belong to the Catalans. Catalan flags and “SI!” posters are prevalent. Spanish national flags are in the minority.
Monday was a Catalan holiday with crowds expressing strong – and loud – support for independence. Catalan offices have been raided, with some arrests. Madrid’s national police have replaced the local forces in Barcelona, at least. I don’t know if Madrid will impose
its will should it not be pleased with the result. I do believe, however, that should they do so, it will get messy. Sad; beautiful people, beautiful region.
I’m thinking it’s a good thing I’m away a couple of days before the vote.
The Kurds have a FAR more legitimate historic and cultural claim to an independent State than the imaginary “Palestinians” ever did … but do the Leftists fly Kurdish flags on college campuses ? Of course not … because the Kurds are NOT at WAR with Israel. They don’t have a “Charter” that includes the institutionalized destruction of Israel. Perhaps if the Kurds want rabid public support for their Independence, they should write a little Jew-HATE into their Charter.
Imagine Catalonia and Kurdistan gaining independence together-what a rush! Glorious, and globalization has a lot to do with, free us from the shackles of dysfunctional nation-states and replacing them with nimbler city-states like Dubai.
