Government Overreach on Canada’s Left Coast

Something very peculiar recently happened to a single father in Vancouver:

A single father, Crook is trying to teach his kids aged five to 11 to be independent and able to navigate Vancouver without his supervision.
He started by taking them on public transit — including their 45-minute trips to school — to teach them how that works. Over time, he began allowing the older four to go without him on their commute to school.
But somebody complained and the Ministry of Children and Family Development swooped in, investigated and sent Crook a letter warning him of its “protection concerns.”

Mr. Crook has his own blog, which is very fascinating.

  1. My opinion is in complete agreement with the family, and opposed to all of what the gov’t of BC is saying.
    a couple of points…
I think the gov’t is arbitrary in its finding, that they wouldn’t be doing this if he was not a single father. That the gov’t of BC points out other provinces have different rules regarding this is of no consequence as their rules simply don’t apply within BC, and part of the reason this country has separate provinces as not all people are the same. As if anyone in BC cares one iota how the law is in Ontario. Keep in mind that those lawyers that were consulted in other provinces, are not permitted to practice in BC if they haven’t passed the bar exam and paid their dues in BC. How does their opinion worth mentioning in this issue?
I disagree with the gov’t ministry that the streets bordering a townhouse example vs the fully enclosed courtyard at his condo are the same. One area is on publicly owned land, and the other, the enclosed courtyard is on privately owned land.
My youngest daughter has flown twice on WestJet from Regina to Thunder Bay, alone, and of the age of 11 and 12. I wasn’t worried. The gov’t didn’t intervene, and I didn’t have to put up with an anonymous complaint.
    and…
Do you want to be more free? starve the gov’t. There is no other way.

  2. The most SHOCKING thing I see this single dad doing to his children … is giving them “at home” haircuts. I understand the need for a single dad to be frugal and whatnot, but seriously … this could irreparably damage his boy’s social lives. Or perhaps this is some sort of “Canadian” hairstyle that is accomplished by placing one’s head in a blender. In either case I fully support the intervention of Canadian Social Services. Perhaps a nice Foster Family (or two) would help get the boy’s hair “situation” sorted out.
Oh … and that bit about allowing his kids to solo circumnavigate the mean streets of Hongcouver … I have no problem with that whatsoever. The Govt. should stand down.
BTW … this is called sarcasm and satire. Of course I am joking about the kids coiffs … they look like lovely children, being well-raised. But my attempted humor is to point out the absurdity of the Nanny State. And I too, walked with brother to virtually every day of school from K-12 (and suffered some extremely tragic haircuts … including the buzzed flattop I thought was cool in 3rd grade). Statistically, this man’s children are far more likely to be molestered at home, by a close family relative than by some stranger at the bus stop. So in order to keep the kids truly SAFE … the State should immediately remove the kids from their home and move them into Foster Homes … oops … those are also far more likely scenes of molestering than the bus stop. OK then … it’s off to State run Orphanages with the lot of em … or medical experiments … (hint: more ironic sarcasm).

  3. My father lived in B. C. and I have to travel there every few weeks to work on the house as I settle his estate. With all the horsing around I’ve gone through so far, I’m not surprised at the incident described in the original news item.
It’s B. C., a place where logic and reason go to die. With idiocy like that, I can see why investment money is skedaddling out of that province.

  4. …teaching independence, but selling his car, making him dependent on government transit. Oh, that works.

  5. This guy has sold his car, making him dependent on government run transit. That’s his idea of independence. I suspect he regularly votes for bigger government, and now he is getting the shaft. He might figure it out eventually. I wonder if mummy’s new beau has wheels. I sure hope so.

  6. I’m pretty sure he voted for more government, now he has more government.
How’s that working out for you ? Not so good huh ?

  7. Five kids are expensive. Maybe he just chose to spend the cost of a car on the kids. He sounds like a fairly independent guy. Not everyone in BeCause is a commie.

  8. Yeah, I’m struggling with my sympathy on this one. Lives in BC, more than likely votes for the left parties (which is all of them there), sold his car (the very icon and means of independence)? Nope, no sympathy: you get what you voted for.

  9. If a government had the obligation and duty to protect children, abortion, so-called sex change operations and maybe public schools would be illegal.

  10. “…has sold his car, making him dependent on government run transit. That’s his idea of independence…”
He has to contribute to the costs of government run transit whether he uses it or not. If he thinks it makes financial sense for his family not to own a car, perhaps you are no better equipped to judge him than the bureaucracy is. I wonder if you own a car? If you do does that make you independent of a government run road system? A government run insurance scheme?

  11. Best comment of the bunch Ken…and 100% bang on the money.
Unionized Public Servants ensuring they have the capability to direct your life from birth until death…
Marxist Bastards the lot of them….

  12. Government overreach?
Clue #1: They have a Ministry called Ministry of Children and Family Development.
To the left 1984 is not fiction. It’s a blueprint.

  13. My, how things have changed. Back in my day(love using this expression on my grown children), I walked to school alone from Grade One and up. As an adult, I can cover the same distance in 15 minutes. I think now days a parent might get arrested if they had their 6 year old walked that distance to school alone, FFS!

  14. ‘left’ coast in place of ‘west’ coast. LOL !!! can I use that?
shyt. now we have to withdraw all those out of date jogfree books.
truth in advertising there lefties !!!
my trips to school began rather abruptly when the policy changed from being forbidden to go around the corner, to, forced to navigate for myself at FIVE for kindergarten.
later on, the trip to school consisted of waiting till the last moment and then hopping the 10 foot chain link fence at the back of the yard, replete with bent over barbs at the top.

  15. While intrusion into family is most certainly unacceptable, there usually is more to the story that media omit in order to masturbate people’s minds.
If the story is as presented, the useless bureaucratic paper pushers should stay out of it. One can understand that being useless, they want to generate some activity to justify their existence.
One also wonders how is it that he in the history of the world civilisations let their children wander around without supervision of said bureaucrats and everybody is here.
The person that complained should hang her/his head in shame. It is one thing to complain when there is a known abuse and another when things are working as they should, without interfering idiots.
As for the guy not having a car, it is his choice and decision, other than that nobody else’s business.
If he is a socialist, well, he got what he wanted, what’s there to complain about. He should be asking for more interference from the government.
You see, when you vote socialists there is only one way, there isn’t even the highway.
How is it that people don’t understand it, don’t get it? The socialist blabber about helping the downtrodden is a demagoguery, end of story.
Wasn’t Hugo there to help? Isn’t Maduro helping?
What is there that is so hard to grasp.

  16. Yeah but what if the twenty random hitch-hikers are on that bus?
    Colliding narratives, tonight on SDA.

  17. Then the goverment’s efforts should be directed to solving those “twenty random hitch-hikers” who are potentially a threat to peaceful, law-abiding passengers, especially well-trained, well-behaved children going to and from school. The government should not be misidentifying as the “problem” potential victims who should be kept locked up and/or guarded.

  18. As they say B.C stands for Becoming California, but I am not sure even California would attempt this type of attrocity.
