  1. They produced quality music, pushing the rock envelope in the direction of jazz. RIP Walter Becker.

  2. I wonder how Margaret Atwood, late of NIMBY fame, is going to deal with this when it comes to Canada.

Maybe L’il Tater head will build ten and distribute them equally among the provinces, or is he building the highways in the Territories to accommodate the massive amount of construction equipment that will be required to build them in the north. I don’t suppose he’ll want them anywhere near Ottawa, he just needs the votes. Canadians wait in expectation!

  3. I thought that the name “Burning Man” came from when the stoners went to the STI clinics about two weeks later, when asked the question, What is your problem today? they replied “It’s burning, man”

  4. You been tellin’ me you’re a genius
    Since you were seventeen
In all the time I’ve known you
I still don’t know what you mean
    The weekend at the college
Didn’t turn out like you planned
The things that pass for knowledge
    I can’t understand
    Timeless truth to it.

  5. Agree. One of the most overrated bands ever to grace classic rock stations across Canada.

  6. AGW RIP.
Pen Hadow’s Bonapartian Retreat “away from the highly concentrated ice.” = F.A.I.L.

    “Reaching 80N: interesting questions answered”
“The day we reached 80N, strong NW winds to our north could have opened up the existing ice-free channels to beyond 85N. But within 24 hours the opposite happened, contrary to opinion onboard and ashore, and it was deemed prudent to head south and continue our scientific work in the CAO away from the highly concentrated ice.”
“If someone’s exclusive objective had been to go as far north as possible, undertaking no science and with a higher tolerance of risk regarding entrapment, they may have reached closer to 86N this season.”

  7. You can’t question Steely Dan’s musical talent but they did have a tendency to take themselves and their albums a bit too seriously. IMO

  8. With all due respect, that can only be your lack of understanding of music and your complete lack of appreciation for great music and lyrics. How old are you?
Tell us what musical groups you find less annoying and irritating, then I will have a measure of your take on music in general and perhaps how old you are.
Steely Dan and pot got me through the hard times in my life, I don’t like hearing criticism of the SD duo. They were the most advanced and innovative musicians in the pop music world through the 70’s and 80s and still going. There has not been anything like them, ever. They are as unique as the Beatles and the BGs.
Donald Fagan is one of the most prolific song writers in America. Not cheezy three chord crap either. SD music was complex, melodic, funkily rhythmic and a joy to play in the background as you tool on down the highway to destiny or maybe to a burger joint.
When I hear great music dissed, the case for more music programs in schools becomes apparent.

  9. There are 2 kinds of music – good and bad.
You be the judge. Music is an art form. You don’t judge for me nor I for you.
On a more frivolous note I was driving through SW Saskatchewan last week and listened to Kindersley radio rockin’ out on Neil Young’s Southern Man.Very Canadian.

  10. I found Steely Dan baffling and inconsistent. Then again, I don’t like the works of Karlheinz Stockhausen, either.
I guess I have no musical taste.

  11. AGW RIP.

“These Leftist Media Outlets Blamed Global Warming For Hurricane Harvey”
“CNN, HuffPost, MSNBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post and assorted news media outlets recently hyped “climate change” in connection with Hurricane Harvey.
“Climate change” is a euphemism used by leftists for anthropogenic global warming; an assertion that global temperatures are significantly and dangerously rising as a function of the burning of fossil fuels.
The aforementioned news media outlets are pushing a narrative of consensus across “experts” and “scientists” regarding the worsening of Harvey’s impacts as a function of “climate change.””

  12. “Steely Dan and pot got me through the hard times in life… ” Maybe I never got into them because I’m not a pot head.
My favourite band is probably Dire straits. I like everything they did and everything Mark Knopfler has done since. I like The Who, The Beatles, pre 1980 Rolling Stones, The Kinks, AC DC. I’m 53 years old.

  13. And I took music in high school, was in a cadet band and play the guitar. I am not a musical illiterate.

“Having consulted experts and sent portions of the infested wool for laboratory analysis, the biologist has now been told by Rentokil that her traumatic experience is shared by many others who opt for organic insulation.”
““It was soul-destroying and incredibly stressful when we couldn’t work out where all the moths were coming from,” she told The Telegraph.””

  15. My fellow commenters difficulty with Steely Dan is the same difficulty the “music industry” had with the band. Which bin to place their music into ? Rock ? Jazz ? Blues ? Experimental ? Prog Rock ? And the “look” of the band … a long-haired Asian-looking white dude and his toothy Jew-looking partner playing a melodica ? They stopped touring early in their career because the critics said they were such an UGLY band. Brutal reviews by the pretty people. But what Becker (and Fagen) were (are) … is composers. Their music is rooted in Jazz and Blues and has the feel of a Jazz masters improv. Each instrument builds a part of a composition the parts of which all contribute to the whole of the music. I believe that to understand the complexity, beauty, and intricacy of SD’s music, it is helpful to see the individual instruments playing their part of the composition. Each instrument shifts from rhythmic accompaniment to mind bending solo. One cannot help but come away with a massive appreciation of the musicality and detail of each SD composition. I expect that their music is simply … too complex for the average listener. It is a complex mathematical equation that few can grasp.
These are not necessarily the BEST examples out there (on YouTube) … but are fairly representative of the amazing musical passages written by this super-creative duo. NOTE: SD also sought out the top players of every instrument and cajoled the best of their work onto the structure of each SD project. Few bands could survive the ego clash of bringing in MORE (or at least uniquely) talented players to collaborate.

Yes … Steely Dan is one of my most beloved band of all time. I have an extensive collection of their discography on Japanese vinyl and Mobile Fidelity vinyl. Their detailed, layered, and nuanced music is what drove my brother and I into becoming serious audiophiles searching for playback equal to their music. I dearly loved Water Beckers musical sensibilities and pure talent. I already miss him. I am so glad that I got to see SD LIVE on multiple occasions … the best of which being in the third row at Chicago’s (Louis Sullivan’s) Auditorium Theatre … and the most recent, outdoors, on Pier 47 in San Francisco.

  16. THIS is what I hear when I listen to Steely Dan. BTW … the frat boy standard “Hey 19” is probably my least favorite SD song of all time … but boy do the frat boys whoop it up when they play it … THIS otoh is what makes SD great …
    https://youtu.be/_ldtieSEyQM

  17. THIS is what I HEAR when I listen to SD … musical mastery … genius … simply genius … and FEELING … the pauses and the pacing are mind bending …
    https://youtu.be/IJ0WD8uBWaU
And if you really want some fun … try playing the Bodhitsattva solo on Guitar Hero on EXPERT level … virtually impossible unless you FEEL each note before you play it …

  18. a biologist no less.
reminds me of the hoopla when high efficiency furnaces showed up. my thoughts at the time: ’tis new technology, Im gonna wait and see.
and I did and I did. I waited and saw the huge expense incurred by the sheeple who jumped in both feet when it was found that the glue used for the exhaust pipes was inadequate.
    oopsie.
regarding musical tastes, well, I just turned 66, do the math. I DETESTED the early beatles (infantile lyrics) and tolerated their later stuff. everything changed when I found out about some bloke named Jimmy Page.
for some breathtaking Hendrix tribute music do a search ‘Randy Hansen’ on youtube. my absolute fav war protest song is ‘Machine Gun’.
p.s. I got a fantastic deal on a Yamaha with 3 pickups and a Marshall amp. my neighbor told me he could hear it thru *my* wall *and* his.
if Im a south paw, howcum I bat, golf, and guitar right handed?

  19. Both you guys are idiots. Steely Dan provided quality music with intellectual lyrics in a time of empty headed heavy metal and disco. You probably don’t understand “Home at last”, for example, because you’re both the type of cretin whose idea of Homer is Homer Simpson. You have to have some musical appreciation beyond 3-chord progressions to get it. Go back to your “classic rock” radio stations that still play “Stairway to Heaven” at least once a day.

    A small sample …
    Rose darling come to me
    Snake Mary dreams along
I would guess she’s in Detroit
With lots of money in the bank
    Although I could be wrong
    You must know it’s right
The spoor is on the wind tonight
You won’t feel it till it grows

Donald Fagen is a brilliant story teller and and social commentator. His lyrics can be as ponderous and oblique as anything Dylan ever wrote
