Janelle Pewapsconias recorded a video of the performance Saturday night at Folkfest in Saskatoon and posted it on her Facebook page. It shows Ukrainian dancers, some wearing headdressess, performing a routine which includes sections similar to powwow dancing.
In a statement, the Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble said the piece, called “Canadian Kaleidoscope,” has been performed internationally and in Saskatoon since 2003. The dance group said the performance was meant to promote inclusivity, not disrespect Indigenous culture.

Indigenous people ultimately risk “self-banishment” to the fringes of mainstream Canadian awareness because the safest and least complicated option for the rest of us will be just to ignore them whenever or wherever possible.

Anyone else getting tired of listening to these constantly offended “first nations” whiners. It doesn t seem to matter what the incident they will try to avail themselves of a reason to be martyrs. Obviously just another of the growing number who spend their miserable lives seeking out things that “offend” them. Those of her ilk should be ridiculed mercilessly or simply ignored.
I’ve stopped eating sushi, and returned to my “own peoples” delicious pickled Herring in wine and vinegar. I felt guilty for “appropriating” someone else’s food culture *giggle* … so now I eat my raw fish according to the cultural heritage of “my people” in Sweden. Rather than acknowledge and celebrate that we shared a food in common … the PROG’s insisted that I “respect the differences”

So, if a man is allowed to identify as a woman and a white woman is allowed to identify as a black woman, why isn’t a Ukrainian person allowed to identify as an Indigenous person?

My suggestion to the Ukraine dancers is to stop celebrating indigenous culture and start celebrating their culture and the culture of their neighbors (Poland, Slovakia etc.). Leave the outraged indigenous spokespersons and their 19 followers alone.
I for one would love to learn more about Ukrainians. They make good beer. That I know.

From today’s local newspaper: “The fact that Mayor *** does not see a connection between the CAO’s indigenous racial identity leads me to believe he operates under an ideology of colour-blindness, believing the best way to deal with racial discrimination is to treat individuals equally without regard to race, ethnicity or culture.”
The writer goes on to say the mayor’s “expressed view only serves to ignore the negative racial experiences, the violence and the hatred waged on indigenous women for decades”.
He closes with his morally superior views, praising “individuals like myself who work everyday at repairing the broken relationship between SETTLERS and indigenous peoples.”
No surprise that he self identifies as an “educator, political scientist and anti-discrimination activist”.
Keep the pot stirring, man – there’s still money to be made.
