You see, Dr Strouse is – in his mind, at least – “dismantling linguistic racism.” And he’s doing this using minority students as his little foot soldiers. How very brave of him. And that ungrammatical job application, the one enlivened with incomprehensible sentences and lots of inventive spelling, will do just fine. Because by the time any sufficiently credulous students have pinned their hopes upon it, it won’t be his problem.

I had to deal with that sort of thing while I was teaching.
I often complained, quite rightly, about the poor spelling and grammar used by my students. Most, after graduation, were going into industry and making those sorts of errors on drawings or work orders could have serious consequences.
The department secretary scolded me for that, fobbing it all off as “language is evolving”. The department administrators reprimanded me because it wasn’t my job to correct the spelling or grammar as I wasn’t teaching English.
Then again, those would be the same people who would become outraged if, say, the restaurant they were at got their order wrong because someone didn’t write things down properly.
Go figure.
One of the Defining statutes for “Snowflake”
“Correcting errors of spelling and basic grammar can, we’re told, “make students feel bewildered, hurt, or angry.” Yes, personal growth can do that, especially when overdue.
Ahh Gee…how sad for them…
Bill Whittle had it right: Lazy, whining, complaining, bitching, screaming, screeching and in my opinion, utterly f’n USELESS spoiled little shits who cant even do their own laundry…Trudeau being an excellent example of said type of “education”.
My two adult girls (23-26), are about as far from being snowflakes as one will find. Both work – provide for their own & refuse to take shit from anyone…incl me. And for that, I am proud.!
The Marxist SJW rubbish being sold as Education could come to an End.
DE-CERTIFY PUBLIC SERVANTS – All of them. NOW.
“Correcting errors of spelling and basic grammar can, we’re told, “make students feel bewildered, hurt, or angry.”
So can losing one’s job for not being able to write things down properly. Being careless or outright stupid can have consequences.
covefefe
yo mak, de fbeekin sly o che hey.
I wunnder if the prof could make sense of THAT tidbit of ‘street comm’.
because THAT is what HIS kind of ‘logic’ leads to.
It just wouldn’t be right to leave the discussion without this clip from the movie Airplane:

I’ve worked in shops where, if one talked like that, one might have had to go afterward to an emergency ward to have something removed from one’s body.
One thing I learned was to talk plainly and clearly with the people doing the work. Making them do something over because of they couldn’t figure out what one meant was a sure way of making permanent enemies.
It’s a good thing that the kind Doctor didn’t practice what he’s now teaching, when he was doing his graduate work or applying for his current job. If he had his current job would be wearing a paper hat and standing at a fast food counter. Those jobs will now be filled by his current students.
I love medieval literature, like Beowulf, le Morte d’Arthur, Der Nibelungenlied, Chanson de Roland. Of course, I have to read all of them in modern English translation. I would love to read them all in the original, but life is too short to learn all the languages, and I cast too wide a net, albeit for little haul. I love also the deliberately medieval style employed by Sir Richard Burton (no, not the one who married Liz Taylor)in his translation of Tales from the Arabian Nights.
I envy in that sense someone with such love of language that he would devote his life to medieval literature. Or so I thought. I cannot for the life of me imagine someone like that who does not take care of his own daily language, or advocates the destruction of it. I have no idea why this particular person chose this particular field. It is totally incongruous.
I agree, “correcting errors of spelling and basic grammar” should not be part of the job of a college English professor. His students should be past such necessity. College level essays should be free of such errors. However, reality dictates otherwise. You must accept the belated responsibility to overcome high school education deficiencies.
As a newbie, I had the task of teaching “mickey mouse” math (geometry) and general physics (with no math required) courses, though I flatter myself that I succeeded in teaching something worthwhile. I had to take course time (just one lecture each, thankfully) to teach the geometry students how to do fractions (honestly) and to teach the general physics students logic, as both were necessary to their respective courses.
Ahem, It is spelled COVFEFE.
If I can’t tell someone they need to use standard English in the workplace, then surely it follows that no one can tell me what words I have to use — like “zhe” or “Caitlyn Jenner”.
Let’s see if Urdu speakers like it if some don’t speak or write it to a standard.
Then, after they’re steamed, I’d like Dr. Strouse to call them racists. I’d bet it would be a hoot.
– and “covfefe” can be found in a first-edition Shakespeare; don’t remember which.
WHAT? – you don’t have a first-edition Shakespeare??? – Trump does.
