Saw this “success” on site a few years ago,a grade 12 grad who could not use a tape measure.

The stupidity began under Ralph Klein.
It was bad enough that his government cut spending on education, but the people in charge were complete dolts.
At the college where I used to teach, extra funding was given to those departments that were deemed to be “favourable”. That was determined by having recent graduates complete a “customer satisfaction” survey. Those departments and institutions that met certain critical paramaters based on the results of that survey were given that extra money. The rest simply had to made do with their regular allotments.
That meant that the teaching staff were pressured to cave in to whatever demands the administrators placed on us to keep the kiddies happy, as well as satisfying any and every demand of the “customers”.
It was worse in our department as the boss was obsessed about being promoted to the senior administration level and wanted to have some favourable survey results to support his campaign.
The provincial government’s education department was filled with real geniuses (I’m being sarcastic here). One made a comment that he couldn’t figure out what graduate students were. (“If they’ve graduated, how come they’re still students?”)
And then the title of Minster of Education was changed to Minister of Learning.
This is one disaster that started well before Red Rachel took office as premier.

This math course along with most ‘advances’ in education comes from the higher education industry where you have inexperienced dreamers (for lack of a better expression) who are publishing nonsense in the endless quest for funding. Education is no different than AGW or any other government sponsored academic/scientific enterprise where the need to publish takes priority over the need for truth. Take away the government funding and things will quickly return to normal.

The kids have to be dumbed down prior to political indoctrination to libertarian socialism, where you do your own thing while towing the PC line.
Proper grammar & math skills, and ultimately common sense become superpowers. Then when you fail it’s society’s fault, not your giant face ring.

It won’t be long before testing in math class consists of writing papers telling how math makes us feel. of course spelling and grammar won’t be graded.

But really … who cares ? The McDonalds ROBOTS will be programmed to understand multiplication tables by the 1% (ironically) programmers who actually learned math while in school. The 1%-er children of unchecked privilege who actually had a mommy and daddy who ensured they did their homework.
Whenever my daughters soccer team lost to some “blue collar” team of young ruffian girls … we would always shrug, and say that they would all work for my girls some day. And I can report 20-years on … that it has pretty much worked out EXACTLY like that.

There are an amazing number of educrats with doctorates. It’s easy to get and many have very little actual background in teaching. Without these loony schemes, they quite literally have no purpose
I taught some beginning algebra to Grade 8 during my teacher college placement. There was some obligatory screwing around with some new method, but the supervising teacher moved through it before it hopelessly confused the kids. Then we got serious and learned the stuff and did the homework. (It took a few hours to get all the dumbassery out of their heads!)
Few were in love with the subject, but all seemed satisfied to have mastered something in time for recess. They know learning takes effort – they won’t be fooled by dressing it up.

I think in this case bureaucrats are the culprit. Proces is all that matters in a bureaucracy; outcomes are irrelevant.

To the Bolsheviks running the education system, the enemy is standardized testing. I am amazed there is any basis left for comparing us to the world. Anything that could be used to critique teacher competency is strictly verboten.

The reality those tests and surveys are useless.
At the place where I used to teach, that statement would have been “anything that could be used to critique administration supporters or proteges is strictly verboten”.

But over 73% of Grade 4 students know how they feel about triangles and the number 7. That’s a question most East Asian students would have trouble answering.

I have it on good authority, from the august Governor of Virginia, that 93 million a day are killed by guns. Math is hard.
