And the owners of course had that naive, unwashed, scruffy facial hair, dirty clothes look one always gets with these morons. Once the thought virus of communism infects your brain, and destroys all possibility of rational thought for the rest of your life, that is just it. This is the way communism/socialism/progressivism/People’s Temple always ends. Despite the perfect 100% rate of failure, despite the mass graves, despite the financial ruin; there is always another fool who wants to try it.

Value is always determined by it’s worth. It appears not having a cost, including no value applied for donated labor, implied the offer was only worth nothing. Providing something of value from a Person’s own effort, even panhandling, means I acquired this Food; Shelter; etc.; it is now mine.
Having Property; even the single meal acquired by effort contributes to self-worth. Out of self-worth grows Initiative; out of Initiative grows contribution to the Social Contract and contentment of substance.
Communism is coercive. This restaurant did not employ coercion.

I have an idea! How about VOLUNTARY tax payments ? How would THAT be for a Communist experiment ? If Marxist Theory “should” work in private business … then shouldn’t it also work for government ? After all … in a restaurant, you pay for goods and services … and tax payments are for (“your fair share”) of goods and services … so, let THE PEOPLE decide how much they will pay at the Federal, State, and local “restaurant”
The problem that I see is why anyone with money would want to dine with homeless people and drug addicts. People with money willingly pay more to avoid the dregs of humanity. If your target market is the bottom 10% of society, maybe rethink your business plan.
A successful micro-socialist entity does exist — it’s the family unit. So successful that Communists wish to destroy it.

Robert Owens’ New Harmony, Indiana community collapsed within two years of his leaving it in control of the community. The Mormons tried it at Orderville, UT. That lasted about ten years. Even the kibbutz system has been largely incorporated. One book that covers much of this is Joshua Muravchik’s Heaven on Earth. Muravchick is another former red diaper baby who came to realize, through personal observation, the unworkability of socialism.
