Congressional Republicans lost their spines sometime in the late 1990s – when the Clinton impeachment blew up on them I think – and never got them back, if you ask me. They’re much happier being in opposition than having to govern. Then they can bloviate on any topic they want, safe in the knowledge they don’t actually have to do anything about it, and can watch the Democrats continue to steer America into the ditch – which is where the congressional Republicans actually want to go but don’t dare say so. Mostly because said Repubs are utterly beholden to their big-business masters, and none of them want anything to do with conservatism.
As for McCain, if he ever actually had any decency or self-respect, he’d have resigned from politics after losing to Obama and gotten the hell off the stage. He never even really wanted to beat Obama anyway. He just wanted his “turn” at the presidential nomination that he thought Bush stole from him, so he could run an “honourable” campaign and lose.

It goes back to Trump’s comments about McCain being captured in Vietnam and that is the only reason he is considered a war hero.
