Hard freezes in some of France’s famous wine-making regions, including Champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy, have caused extensive damage.
Temperatures plunged in all three regions last week, sometimes to below -7C (19°F).
In the Bugey region near Lyon, winemakers said the damage was extensive, with some vineyards totally destroyed.
“Frost destroyed everything – shoots are dead,” Julien Hubail, expert at the Bugey wine union, said. “In winemakers’ memory it had never happened, no one had ever experienced such a severe freeze.”
In Champagne the frost impact is worse than last year’s, and last year was down more than 20% from the year before that.

Global war….I mean climate cha….extreme weather!
It’s all those burning tires in Paris!
Global Warming is a bitch!
Meh. Who cares about French wine? If they can’t even muster the neurons and synapses to throw off the chains of EU slavery… What good is wine gonna do them?
If they double down on the already epic stupid of Merkel and Germany… France deserves no help from anyone or anything.
France is fully committed to the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Time for reality to do its easily foreseeable stuff.
CO2 caused this freeze. Haven’t you heard of dry ice?
Listen up you Knuckledraggers, often I am on the same page with you lot(Trudeau, the left, Liberals,, Islam, Political Correctness) but on climate warming, you are so blind to the big picture. Never mind about a local aberration in the wine fields, FFS, the real scary stuff is happening at the poles. I will not try and convince you with all the rational arguments available, time will slowly tell and you will wake up to the threat of excessive burning fossil fuels.
BTW, the other area we disagree on is Trump, please give your collective heads a shake and realize what a blowhard ignorant idiot Trump is.
I will continue to invest in French wine … while I divest in global warming and non-scientific fear mongering. I will continue to follow my own knowledge and experience with this planet’s natural weather AND climate variation and progression.
“Listen up you Knuckledraggers, often I am … a blowhard…”
No argument here.
Study a little geology and learn more the natural long-term range of climates, or some biology and learn about how CO2 depletion is a risk to all land based life (don’t like desertification? Add CO2!), and then we can talk some more.
Champagne… Bordeaux… Burgundy… – they in the same country as Paris? You know, the place that gave us the Paris Agreement? Just askin’
So Canuckguy, lessee if I get this straight. France is undergoing severe freezing weather that’s never happened before, yet you say the Poles are catastrophically heating up?
– The Poles on the same planet as France? Just askin’
For context on my last comment, prior to 5 million years ago (give or take) when the Isthmus of Panama closed off and the Pacific was isolated from the Atlantic at the equator, it was unusual to have year-round ice at either (or both) poles. That’s part of the natural range within the geologic record.
Canuck Guy, there is nothing happening at the poles. Perhaps if even one of the wildly exaggerated predictions from the faulty models ever came true, there would be some interest, but based upon experience and observation, a climate prediction is no more qualified than a fun house fortune telling machine.
There is not one iota of sampled data upon which to build a climate warming case. If there were, every newspaper would print it, every single day. All we ever witness is vague innuendo, shifting story lines, and gobbledygook, with the words “may”, “could” or “perhaps” added to avoid responsibility. Therefore they had to go with Climate Change. What is that exactly? That means you can point at the climate, whether it goes up or down, and say, see, it’s changing, now cut me a check.
No use in engaging in a climate debate with you all. It’s like trying to reason with a Heinz pickle. Let’s just agree to disagree. I hope the SDA is still around in 5 years, that’s when I figure it will be obvious I am right and you all are wrong.
“Scientists predict an active 2013 hurricane season due to accelerated Global Warming and the warmer Atlantic Ocean. They are calling for 18 named storms, nine of which will become hurricanes and four of which will develop into major hurricanes. That’s about 50 percent more activity than during a normal season.” [N.B. It was the calmest hurricane season that year in decades.]
“[In New York City by 2008] The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change. There will be more police cars. Why? Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up… Under the greenhouse effect, extreme weather increases. Depending on where you are in terms of the hydrological cycle, you get more of whatever you’re prone to get. New York can get droughts, the droughts can get more severe and you’ll have signs in restaurants saying ‘Water by request only.’” ~ James Hansen testimony before Congress in June 1988
“By 2000, British and American oil will have diminished to a trickle……Ozone depletion and global warming threaten food shortages, but the wealthy North will enjoy a temporary reprieve by buying up the produce of the South. Unrest among the hungry and the ensuing political instability, will be contained by the North’s greater military might. A bleak future indeed, but an inevitable one unless we change the way we live…..At present rates of exploitation there may be no rainforest left in 10 years. If measures are not taken immediately, the greenhouse effect may be unstoppable in 12 to 15 years.” ~ 5000 Days to Save the Planet ~ Edward Goldsmith 1991
5-years eh ? Thank you for adopting an accelerated Al Gore timetable … so we will all still be here to laugh in your face. BTW … Santa Barbara STILL has remnants of the BLUE LINE painted on streets and sidewalks across the town to illustrate the sea level rise inundation that was due about 5-years ago. And … no … the sea hasn’t risen in any perceptible way whatsoever. The sea remains several meters behind (below) schedule. When fear mongering is ALL you got to FORCE your belief on others … it is always DOOMED to failure.
The poles? You mean Antarctica where the ice sheet AREA and VOLUME is at record highs?
Are you buying the BS regarding “ice calving” there? You do realize Antarctica is also a volcanically active area. Despite that, the ice sheet is very healthy, and, it still hits -60 consistently in its long subzero winter.
As for the Arctic, you do realize that it has always had summers, where, the temperature gets above freezing. There has always been thawing, erosion, and subsidence. Those are all normal processes, and, they are not accelerating. That is the typical hyperbole from the enviroloons, scare tactics, fire and brimstone, etc. Remember, Greenpeace admitted that extreme distortion is their MO
Chill out, grab a beer, and stop watching the brain damage and propaganda on the Corpse, ctv, CNN, etc. They all are agenda driven, and not interested in truth, science, or reason. Just Liberal talking points.
Awesome Kenji, love to see a link for that.
In Hongcouver, their own mayor moonbeam, Gregor Robertson, is challenging your loon Brown, for the Greentard award of the century.
He believes that all of the Hongcouver coastline needs immense dykes built, immediately, to counter the rapid, devastating, destructive sea level rise, with billions of dollars of ” investment”. Of course, he wants Turdopey to fund it.
Despite no evidence of rapid, devastating, destructive sea level rise, it MUST be done. Or else!
The evidence is missing from the Greentard agenda, it’s all based on emotional blackmail and hypotheticals. The models were wrong? No, no, no, they’re not ‘wrong’, they are just premature………..but hey, Gore and Dr Fruitfly said it is so, they would never lie, would they? A professional politician, and a media propagandist.
CO2 is plant food; it is an essential building block of life on earth as we know it. The inescapable if unfashionable conclusion is that the human use of fossil fuels has been causing the greening of the planet in three separate ways: first, by displacing firewood as a fuel; second, by slightly warming the climate; and third, by raising carbon dioxide levels, which raise plant growth rates.

“…coastline needs immense dykes built, immediately…”
Could he possibly be trying to get the city protected for a reason he doesn’t want to discuss. You know, so the tax base doesn’t pick up and move.

“The Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) “megathrust” fault is a 1,000 Km long dipping fault that stretches from Northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino California. ”
On vacay in Waikiki. Just saw a group of enviroloons marching down the sidewalk, with their placards. Nobody paying attention to them. Couldn’t engage them from the 18th floor though.
For those that don’t know, Hawaii is a nice lefty haven, after all Obozo came from here
French chemists with a major in fake winemaking will now be the prizes in all out bidding wars.
Canuckguy, give me a prediction climate-wise what will happen in 5 years. No vagueness, what will we see? Metric or SI units would both be fine.
H
The Bordeaux — meh, the Champagne — rarely drink it, but the Burgundy!!!!! For &%$# sake, now I’ll have to fill up and run my car all night to make sure this never, and I mean never happens again!
Now THAT is Climate Injustice.
Another great thead title Kate!
@lefty and Others:
I will be very general, the sea will rise enough that even the climate warming deniers will have to admit they were wrong or at least shut their yaps in shame. I have no numbers to throw at you, just a belief in noticeable effects that even you will acknowledge. Let’s touch base in 5 years or sooner. I am copying and pasting these dialogues on this thread to my Hotmail files. I am actually hoping to be so very wrong and will happily eat crow if so.
I will agree with you, Canuckguy, that there’s no use in discussing catastrophic anthropogenic global warming with us. The reason that there isn’t is that the facts are on our side, the models are you yours, and there isn’t a scientific theory in site.
If the greenhouse model worked the way that the models call for then the heating would occur primarily in the troposphere at mid latitudes. Since the rate of increase there is less than 25% of what was modeled, that means the models are wrong.
One description of the null hypothesis is that, unless a system experiences a change that moves it outside its normal parameters then you cannot be sure there has been any change applied to it at all. That’s where catastrophic anthropogenic global warming is – we’re well withing the temperature range of the last 10,000 years, so we should not assume that it’s affecting anything. Further, since all short-range predictions have proven wrong (Dave lists a few above), the longer term predictions are looking worse.
If you want us to take it seriously, can you provide some falsification criteria for your belief? If it’s not falsifiable (that is, if no experimental results can be listed that are thought to be in the normal range of occurrences, but that will never occur if the theory is right) then it’s not science. And I don’t want to deliberately starve the poorest people on earth (by removing the CO2 fertilization that makes barely arable land farmable, and keeps their families alive). If you are wrong, you are calling for the deaths of hundreds of millions of the poorest people on earth by promoting their starvation.
If you deny the science of CO2 fertilization and say that the risk is still not worth it, then you are evil. Which is it?
It’s Global Warming (TM). Really guys, don’t you know it causes cold weather.
And didn’t the North Pole melt already? I forget.
To Canuckguy:
1. It does not advance your case to call the commenters in general “knuckledraggers.” If by this you mean to impute that you know more about science than the rest of us, well, you are wrong.
2. The only hot Poles are from Poland. They are comfortably leading their WCQ group.
3. Some salient points on the poles. Melting sea ice at the North Pole does not mean that the sea level will rise. Basic physics, duh. Snow and ice cover on the Artic land masses, such as Greenland, if anything are increasing. They are increasing by a lot on Antartica.
4a. Humans contribute very little to the total CO2 in the atmosphere. Completely eliminating human beings would change fractionally the CO2 concentration.
4b. In terms of geological age, our current age, Holocene, has one of the lowest CO2 concentrations. In fact, objectively one may say rather than worrying about too high CO2 concentration, we should worry that it is dangerously low. Another 150 ppm lower, and plant life will not be sustained. But 400, or 450, or 500 are not magic numbers at all. When dinosaurs roamed the Earth during the Mesozoic era, CO2 concentration generally ranged from 1500 to over 2000 ppm.
4c. True, the Earth was much warmer, leading to lush tropical vegetation, but not to runaway global warming. In fact, global temperatures have been dropping since the Cretaceous period, and is now also at its lowest point, matching the late Paleozoic era. In any case, all historical records, whether you are talking in terms of hundreds of years, or thousands of years, show the trend of CO2 concentration follows the temperature variation, not lead it.
5. As to Trump, if you truly agree on Trudeau, the left, Liberals,, Islam, Political Correctness, then you should agree that in spite of your opinion of him, thank God that he is the President and not Hillary Clinton, who would disagree with you on all those points. Even if you agree with only a fraction of what he is doing, that is a fraction over 0% as with Clinton. Just his Supreme Court Justice appointments (and hopefully the plural is apropo)and other judicial appointments alone will rescue the Republic from activist liberal judicial fiat.
“…even the climate warming deniers will have to admit they were wrong or at least shut their yaps in shame … Let’s touch base in 5 years or sooner. …”
My computer model predicts you won’t admit you were wrong, you won’t shut your yap in shame, and you won’t be touching base here in five years or sooner.
I used the term “knuckle-draggers’ as a facetious term of endearment. If I hurt anybody’s feelings I apologize.(JUST being a little facetious there, let’s maintain a sense of humour)
As for Clinton, I certainly did not want her to win, I just wished the GOP had selected a better candidate than Trump. It would have been easy, he was the worse.
Time will tell, surely the next few years(4or5) will tell the tale, that Trump will be proved a disaster for the USA and the climate warming will be painfully obvious even to the most closed minded.
Can the French sing “Oh Susanna” in their native tongue?
Is Al Gore befouling the French countryside at this time?
Surely the french Elites can convince Al Bore to “Move along, you have done enough damage already”
What “noticeable effects”?
If you are referring to the glaciers, they’ve been receding for 12,000 years.
There is no “more frequent occurrences” of floods, forest fires, droughts, hurricanes, etc. Sure, there’s more media coverage, but that does not equate to ” unprecedented levels”
Beliefs equals FEELINGS. Those are not facts, just guesses on your part. There is no rise in sea levels beyond the norm, it’s been a static rate of increase for over a century.
No fairy tales Canuck, just the facts. And the facts say that your feelings of apocalyptic global warming are bunk.
Woudl like to argeu (ouch) your positoin but I cant type good rite now (owie!). Fingers too sor from (oww) scraping on sidewalk.
The apocalyptic models have been wrong for over 20 years, why do you think another five will suddenly change, abruptly, the ongoing trends?
Gore said that winters would be a hing of the past, for Britain, by 2009. He also saud Arctic Ice would be gone by 2012, and that sea levels would be over 30 metres higher by mid century.
He’s like, an expert in these things too, with a wide following of devotees. So, does Gore get away with broken clock syndrome? Or the proverbial blind squirrel? His fans seem to accept he can be wrong about almost everything, along with the rest of the cult.
This little sleight of hand from the CC people (formerly the AGW people) about displaced polar chill is not very convincing, the whole problem with it is that most records for cold are set in cold years and most cold years are part of cold periods.
When I looked at some of these details, I found that most cold episodes in the mid-latitudes could be traced back to colder source region conditions in the arctic.
I suspect that this displaced polar chill idea is just one of those clever tricks that are meant to lull those who want to believe (usually for political reasons) so they have two different anecdotal avenues to success — if it’s unusually warm that’s climate change, and if it’s unusually cold that’s climate change too.
Nice try, but we do need to be very concerned about one thing, the vast number of brainwashed fellow citizens who are eager to vote for the cynical manipulators of public opinion, some of whom may be deluded true believers themselves, but some of whom just want communism and aren’t man enough to say so. At least Lenin was.
It’s 1 million new illiterate Third World immigrants in 2016 turned into western Carbon emitters that pay no-tax’s to reduce it.
Getting back to the original topic…french wine is overpriced and over-rated, so who cares if their crop is damaged?
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” — H. L. Mencken
The French do. If you were a farmer would you be upset if frost damaged your crops?
“Nice try, but we do need to be very concerned about one thing, the vast number of brainwashed fellow citizens who are eager to vote for the cynical manipulators of public opinion, some of whom may be deluded true believers themselves, but some of whom just want communism and aren’t man enough to say so. At least Lenin was.”
Now that is it, you have it in a nutshell. Thank you Peter for summing up the AGW/Climate Change religion so sufficiently.
After the Soviet Union collapsed the secret or not so secret followers of that style of ideology in the western countries needed a new god to follow as they had overthrown the other one, and then came along M. Strong and his Vestal virgin acolytes.
Just as an aside, only our current prime minister is dumb enough to openly express admiration for communism.
The biggest tragedy is: “What will the future attendees at climate coferences drink?”
Regarding climate warming, I am going to shut up now, will revisit this topic within 5 years. Either to crow or to eat crow. BTW Snagglepuss, be sure to clean the wounds.
I guess the Paris accord didn’t fix the problem, the climate that is.
“Time will tell, surely the next few years(4or5) will tell the tale, that Trump will be proved a disaster for the USA and the climate warming will be painfully obvious even to the most closed minded”.
“Regarding climate warming, I am going to shut up now, will revisit this topic within 5 years. Either to crow or to eat crow. BTW Snagglepuss, be sure to clean the wounds.”
Why thank you “Canuckguy” such precise predictions… of nothing.
Even if the planet showed a massive warming in 5 years.. this would be evidence of what?
Nice job of trolling and virtue posing, you really are “Canuckguy” .
Let me guess, human rights tribunals are great, money comes from the government and national debt is “an investment”.
Small wonder this country is sinking into fragmentation.
What part of a warmer world is damaging to Canada?
If you were a patriot you should be aggressively causing as much AGW as you humanly can..
All hail King Knut.
@John Robertson regarding your:
“Let me guess, human rights tribunals are great, money comes from the government and national debt is “an investment”.”
Certainly not. We are on the same page in regard to those subjects.
Nice, Mr Science is Settled. You’ve proven everything that is wrong with the true believers, you don’t discuss, and worst of all, when presented with incontrovertible FACTS, contrary to your faith, you play the spoiled brat, picking up your bat and going home, rather than try to understand that, quite possibly, and likely, the whole premise of AGW has been grossly overhyped, if not outright wrong.
Gee, what could Al Gore have to gain from this, saving Mother Gaia in his noble ways, or enriching himself by 15 Billion Dollars?
Dan – and discounting the deaths that their solution will cause. When I was in elementary school desertification was listed as being an international problem that affected millions. Decreasing airborne CO2 will grow deserts, and make tree-line come down the mountains and further south from the arctic.
Al Gore in en route to make Rachel Carson look like a piker, if his solution is adopted as much as hers was.
“I am actually hoping to be so very wrong and will happily eat crow if so.”
An empty promise, just as CAGW is empty science, as the appropriate time for you to eat crow has long since passed.
I call troll on Canuckguy.
“What part of a warmer world is damaging to Canada?”
As well, what part of increasing CO2 which is already creating a greener world, is damaging to Canada?
@Knott
I’m not a troll. I just happen to have a different opinion on the climate warming issue.
You sound like a PC police liberal who wants to shut down discussions when you disagree.
If you are so concerned about a rise in temperature, please tell us exactly,in degrees centigrade, what the ideal temperature of the earth should be.
