Figured.

In part 34 of a continuing series examining why Canada is not the US, we see the first change in the CPC leadership race. O’Leary cancels his run and endorses Maxime Bernier. As an added bonus, O’Leary manages to keep his record of attendance for CPC debates consistent.
Live stream of the last debate starts at 6 ET.

  1. If O’Leary can pull most of his supporters to Mad Max, then it’s likely a done deal.

  2. I tried watching their meeting with the press and it became unwatchable as the opposition Liberal media were beyond biased and outright obnoxious. The sooner they all go under the better. They deserve to be starving panhandlers.
Captcha – cave buggery (is there any other kind?)

  3. Too bad other candidates who have little support from party members did not drop out earlier. We already got the memo 2 debates ago, people – you all want to be cabinet ministers. I think Kevin knew that he did not have any kind of front runner status (media false news?) or the temperament to manage a government. Most of us are not too easily fooled by a shiny penny, that has red paint on the edges. We want the one we do have as PM gone. Only a Quebec francophone could ever make some serious cuts to the government in Ottawa: go Maxime.

  4. From my count, OLeary got Bernier about 20 minutes of earned exposure by multiple national media outlets.
Just in time for the afternoon “heres what you need to think” political talking points shows.
They will remind the audience that there is a leadership contest, who the front runner is, and that they will be debating tonight.
So anyone hear anything from pricess selfie lately?

  5. I must admit that my respect for O’Leary increased for first time since he entered the scene.

  6. Is Bernier going to trash can Trudeau’s liberty destroying charter? Didn’t think so. You’re going to get more of the same, only slower.

  7. Three parties to choose from in next election.
Three Quebecers to choose from next election.
    I’ll be staying home.

  8. Good to see.
Bernier is the only even mildly libertarian in the race and, to the horror of all the Ontario “Red” Tories is looking like an obvious winner.

  9. I put O’Leary right on par with Trump, completely lacking in professional polish required to defeat the progressives. I like Bernier but I don’t think he is electable in a socialist country. Where are all the great leaders we have in the business community when our country needs them? I’m really not optimistic about the CPC going forward, they just can’t seem to get their sh!t together.

  10. I had a phone call yesterday from Maxime and could hardly understand him and I could have screamed: No, I can’t have my last Prime Minister speaking with a strong Quebec accent. I just can’t. And I mean it: I CAN’T!
Okay, folks, I trust you: Does Erin O’Toole stand a chance? The person I like is Chris Alexander.

  11. I’ll be voting against the current PM/Liberal regime. I don’t care as much about which party I have to support to do that as I do about disrupting the Liberal “progress” toward the destruction of Canada. The end may come anyway, but if the best I can hope for is to delay it, I shall try to delay it.

  12. So you folks will not support Mad Max (despite that you vote for your own local representatives in federal elections not for the PM) because he is from Quebec but would welcome support for Harper/your leader of choice from Quebec? Hypocrisy much?

  13. I never considered O’Leary a serious contender.
You want to lead a national political party in Canada you speak fwench. It’s a rule without exception.
Until the CPC can figure out how to form a majority government without winning a seat in quebek they had better have a bilingual leader.
Pete trudeau sr stuck around for 16 years. I suspect jr is here for a long time as well.

  14. Only when you show up, Uno. Regarding Colonialuststa’s comments, the issue has to do with the frequency with which a PM has come from Quebec. Now the situation is even worse — our PM is from Quebec AND another Trudeau. Enough already.

  15. There’s a lot of reasons why PMs have come from Quebec. They’re seldom on our side. Mulroney was and so is Bernier.
Scheer is probably the best choice to unite the CPC, Bernier is probably the best choice to defeat Trudie and the Lieberal machine. Vote intelligently.

  16. “Live stream 6:00 pm eastern time”. Out west, we’re still working, if only to earn enough money to live after the Libs and the Dips tax us to death.

  17. I never considered Trump a serious contender until he actually showed up on stage the 2nd time to debate the other GOP candidates. From there on I started taking him more seriously. O’Leary’s lack of commitment was apparent right from his late entry into the leadership race. I still held out hope for a Trump-North but alas O’Leary’s visibly weak heart subverted any chance of success. As a PM I think his chair would have been empty too. Too afraid to fail.

  18. Diefenbaker’s charter was ash canned by Trudeau: because it enshrined property rights.
Without property rights, what does free speech mean? If there is no place you are allowed to speak.
What does freedom of association mean, if there is no place you are allowed to gather?
As long as Trudeau’s charter stands, freedom cannot exist in Canada. Until there is someone ready to stand up and say that, there is no point voting for anyone.

  19. I understand that we do not like Quebec, people from Quebec, attitudes from Quebec, racism from Quebec, nuisance from Quebec and smelly breaths from Quebec. I got it. F*** Quebec. I wish they separated. I really, honestly do. But it is not happening. Are there good individuals in Quebec? Very few, but yes. Mad Max is one of the few good ones. That alone should be sufficient for conservatives who value individual. Might not be sufficient for collectivists but collectivists should go away and vote for other parties.

  20. UnoMe >
“Bernier is the only one; he must crush this.”
Heh, based on the accuracy and reality of any post you’ve ever made here, everyone now knows difinitivly who NOT to vote for.
Canadians “sitting on the fence” should vote Trump before considering any of UnoMe’s “stoner endorsements” for Party leader.

  21. Colon, you are a Judas goat.
I’ll take Quebecois racism over your dipshit multiculti crap anyday.
If the ROC were as healthily xenophobic as the Quebecois are, many of Canada’s problems wouldn’t even exist.

  22. Max can’t help that he’s from Quebec.
Let’s not hold it against him.
Read his ideas, listen to him speak, then decide for yourselves.
    He’s the Anti-Trudeau.
    I think he’ll be great.

  23. Prime ministers from quebek make sure they look after quebek. Canada’s history is full of examples.
The dairy quota delivered by bongos old man. Mulroney took the CF-18 maintenance contract away from Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg and gave it to quebek.
Makes you wonder why the country even exists.

  24. “…your dipshit multiculti crap anyday.”
That’s bizarre even by you admittedly rather low standards.

  25. A candidate’s policy on firearms tells us a lot about their attitude on a lot of issues.
    From: Maxime Bernier
    Date: 14 February 2017, 09:25
Subject: A fair gun policy for Canada
Canadian Firearms laws are broken, and I want to fix them.
At the whim of a bureaucrat, firearms are assigned new classifications.
Legally purchased firearms are being made illegal, even though no laws have changed.
    This needs to stop.
The firearms laws are so complicated, and so convoluted, that they have become the perfect example of injustice in the name of justice.
To fix this, I propose we replace the current Firearms Act with clear legislation based on reason, not on fear.
Firearms ownership is part of our shared Canadian heritage. We are a country founded on the fur trade. This needs to be recognized.
I also recognize that we need to protect public safety and avoid the excesses that exist south of the border.
There are three main areas to look at when considering firearms legislation. Licensing; classification of firearms; and magazine sizes.
I do not propose that we replace our current licensing system. Instead, we should ensure that firearms safety courses are more readily available, especially in rural and remote areas.
I will double the length of firearms licenses from 5 to 10 years.
We need to provide clear, non-arbitrary legislation for what constitutes a non-restricted, restricted, or prohibited firearm.
Firearms should not be classified based on how they look, but on how they function.
    I propose the following classifications:
    Non-Restricted:
    (a) a firearm that is not a prohibited or restricted firearm.
    Prohibited:
    (a) a fully-automatic firearm,
    (b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted, is less than 660 mm in length.
    (c) a firearm that is listed as prohibited prior to June 20, 2016.
    Restricted:
    (a) a firearm that is not a prohibited firearm,
    (b) a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
    (c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise.
This is in line with the Simplified Classification System, adopted by Conservative members at the Policy Convention in Vancouver last year.
The current regulation of magazine sizes is irrational. Our internationally competitive shooters are forced to practice with magazines below standard capacity.
This makes no sense. It’s clear that those who are not inclined to follow the law will not be deterred by having to remove a rivet from a magazine.
My proposal would repeal the ineffective, and frankly nonsensical, magazine capacity restrictions.
The classification of firearms should not change by the whim of the RCMP, or cabinet. It should require a change in law through Parliament to re-classify a firearm.
To respect our Canadian tradition of firearms ownership, and the principle of fairness, I would have the Canadian government reimburse all firearms owners for their loss of property resulting from the implementation of Bill C-68, and any subsequent legislation that caused the confiscation of their legally purchased firearms.
This policy, like all my policies, is based on freedom and responsibility, fairness and respect.
I believe it is the right answer for firearms legislation in Canada.
    Sincerely,
    Maxime Bernier

  26. OK, BERNIER SUPPORTERS, WHAT’S HIS POSITION ON OUR MILITARY?
I’ve looked and can’t find anything.
Has a Quebec PM ever supported our military? Trudeau Sr.?, Chretien?, Trudeau Jr?

  27. Maxime Bernier stance on firearms ownership is definitly commendable, pledging to only reduced Third World immigration to 250,000 not so much.
    – but –
Brad Troast, opposes the legalization of marijuana, Snap!
As lifelong gun owners what more could we ask for than to disallow the potheads from legally smoking pot in our country? 🙂
Of course he’s an unelectable PM as an avowed Christian for the “Progressive” bigots of Canada, so never will be, but here are a few of his platform points anyway:
    – Does not believe man-made climate change is a real threat
    – Supports CBC privatization
    – Firearms: repeal of mid-1990s legislation, creation of a prohibited persons list, permission for off-duty police officers to carry firearms
    – Justice: supports use of notwithstanding clause to bring back mandatory minimum sentences
    – Opposed to foreign aid funding that involves abortion – (Does not go far enough here, most foreign aid should be defunded)
    – Immigration: suspend immigration from countries linked to terrorism and Islamic extremism (needs reduction mandate for current inflow)
    – Energy: less federal regulation for electricity sector, accelerated pipeline approval
Unfortunately if he was Hindu, Muslim or a human sacrificing ancient Mayan witch doctor he’d have some serious hope at a candidacy for PM, but alas is not any of those things.

  28. Brad trost will be getting my vote , then maxime , I will vote for the winner of the leadership race except for Chong bong if he wins.
    BRAD TROST IS FRON SASKATCHEWAN!!!,,

  29. Bernier is from Quebec where half of Canada’s supply managed dairy farms exist and yet he has promised to dismantle the cartel. That has to tell you something about him.
For that reason alone, his path forward in Tribal Quebec is questionable.
Collectivists in our media will work hard to ensure that every flaw and tick Bernier may exhibit is fully revealed but that was going to happen to whoever was chosen Conservative leader anyway.

  30. And that is what allows Govt after Govt at any level to literally do what ever the hell they want…with zero recourse by citizens. One knows full well the bent of our Progressive Supreme court of Canada, so no protection there.
Property rights is huge…and is something that absolutely needs to be enshrined…will it happen in my lifetime..? I sincerely hope so…but it will NEVER happen with the progressives in power…particularly the Liberals – theft is in their blood.
Overall…O’Leary was simply not PM material or CPC Leadership material for that matter. Too big of an arrogant mouthpiece for my liking with zero sense of national vision whatsoever – Red tinged to boot.
As a CPC member, I will be voting for Maxime…always liked this guy, he has good policies, National exposure and can bring Quebec in. Works for me…anything to rid us of this Disgusting outright Traitor in the PMO.

  31. IMHO the only objective should be to get rid of turdeau jr. before
he completely runs Canada into the ground. So how should we work
to achieve that objective? One thing for certain is this objective
cannot be achieved without a certain number of Quebec MP’s being
elected. The question then is which candidate is best able to win
those Quebec seats for the CPC and the answer is obvious.
Bernier is the only candidate that has the balls to state that the
outdated supply management system needs to be done away with and
he comes from Quebec which is the major beneficiary of this corrupt
quota system. This is not a new position for him and he keeps getting
elected so he rings a bell with many Quebecios. Therefore I say I don’t
give a shiet that he doesn’t speak perfect English because he is the
only person that has the ability to defeat the lieberal’s chosen one.
We should all remember that Trump is coming after Canada’s supply
    management system.

  32. I really appreciate reading what everyone is saying as this is so important.
No one has mentioned Erin O’Toole and my cousin (naval officer retired) likes him. Does anyone have an opinion?
