"It's a great day for American jobs." – @POTUS, as he issues the Presidential Permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Details here: “We greatly appreciate President Trump’s administration for reviewing and approving this important initiative and we look forward to working with them as we continue to invest in and strengthen North America’s energy infrastructure,” Russ Girling, CEO of TransCanada, said in a statement.TransCanada can start building the final phase of the pipeline, a 1,200-mile section from Alberta, Canada to Steele City, Neb. From there, the already operating southern length of Keystone XL will carry Albertan oil sands to Gulf Coast refineries. Keystone XL is designed to carry 800,000 barrels per day of oil sands to refineries.

We’ve all seen the old pic of the Ab premier standing beside the protest sign that says
No Tar Sands
No Tankers
No Pipelines
No Problem
That was a no-brainer for Trump. He has a much bigger problem with the GOP progressive wing including his own caveats on universal coverage for a federal government replacement of Obama-care. The freedom caucus won’t give him Obama-care light. They are better off leaving Obama-care to continue imploding rather than put their name on a half-baked replacement.
Just-in; not thinking correctly about the ability to provide an ongoing increase in the International Ability to provide ever increasing productivity.
As clearly defined by Adam Smith’s “Wealth Of Nations” it is through Consumer accessiblity; the well known Humanity within North American Ordinary Citizen’s ablityit is to generate Discretionary Income which Supports the Continuing Expansion of all Consumer Societies.
It is the expansion of the PROVEN “Wealth of Nations” precepts and Compassionate Understanding for the Nations struggling for Individual Human Rights through which a Social Contract will alter ‘begging Nations” into People of Accomplishment and the inherent Pride this brings.
Throw Canada a bone. Someone has to take care of the bums up north. Shell and Marathon pulling out of Canada means what?
Canada has been content to piss away +$200 billion in LNG investment in Rupert and to date does not have a crude oil terminal on either coast. A grown up country would ensure maximum value for resource export but not Canada. Hundred’s of billions lost for lack of world oil price.
The current situation is of benefit to American dominance of NA energy interests. This is not in the national interest of Canada. If Turdeau gets Transmountain built I will bite my tongue and give the Liebels full credit. IMHO the Harper government did not explain the vital importance of energy export to Canadian interests and the Liebels could easily cash in on that bungling.
Meanwhile in BC if Clarke threads water and lets the Dippers run their campaign of non confrontation she will likely lose. BC and AB could easily be Dipper provinces by May. Enjoy.
This highlights how ephemeral most of Obama’s decisions were. Historians will look back and wonder what lasting accomplishments he achieved in his eight-year tenure.
Now all the Keystone XL/Oil Sands shares that have been left on the table because of investor pullouts can be bought up by the Americans and it will be the reverse of the 1980 NEP.
That could be a very good thing.
I remember the’70s. Those were good times.
” IMHO the Harper government did not explain the vital importance of energy export to Canadian interests and the Liebels could easily cash in on that bungling.”. Why exactly would this need to be explained by the government? It should be obvious to anyone reading the business section of a newspaper. Are Canadians a bunch of dunderheads?
I still don’t get why we have to get that oil out of the ground and get rid of it down to the US as fast as possible. Of course this is good for the US, as they will have all of the jobs to build the infrastructure and then run all the refineries to turn the oil into all the different products. Why can’t Canada do that?
It has been written that we should try to not take the easy path in life. All the jobs that will provide self worth to people and give them opportunity to provide for their families like they are supposed to do will all go to the south while we take the easy path.
I thought Obama was still … “studying” … the impacts of the pipeline ? Shouldn’t President Trump drag his feet for another 4-years ? If not, then shouldn’t Greenpeace SUE to delay construction ? While Greenpeace issues multiple environmental proclaimations (for entertainment purposes only). Surely Greenpeace can find a Federal Judge who takes them seriously ?
Just in time for Earth Hour. Don’t forget to celebrate by turning on all your lights tomorrow evening.
Never a better moment to re-visit Johnny Horton on Ed Sullivan:

Zero ‘studied’ gay marriage during his first term. Perplexed, he cogitated on it for years until it was safe to announce that he was for it….
Because there’s a lot of idle refinery capacity designed to take heavy crude oil. It’s much cheaper using existing capacity than building new.
Furthermore, to what gasoline standard would Canadian oil be refined? There’s dozens of such standards across the US states.
I still don’t get why we have to get that oil out of the ground and get rid of it down to the US as fast as possible.
What cgh said, plus do you like the ‘free’ health care and other benefits that oil revenue to the governments gives Canadians? This pipeline will give a much needed boost to Alberta’s petroleum industry.
Rest assured that Jerome Brown will BAN all refined Canadian Oil from CA gasoline (we already have bizarre, unique formulations that drive our gasoline price through the roof). Jerome will declare that Californian’s will NOT support conflict-free Canadian Oil ! Jerome will not be satisfied until EVERY Californian is taking “FREE” ($ 100 Trillion tax dollar-funded) MASS transit. And that ONLY the political elites are able to drive $ 150K Tesla “Roadsters” (all trips shorter than 200mi.) …
More refining in Alberta? If it was economical, it would already be so. Why do we want to spend $ billions subsidizing refineries? In an attempt to expand the economy by producing feedstock for plastics manufacturing, Red Rachel is giving private companies $500 million. The important thing is for government to just get out of the way.
I hunt in NB and have met a fee ranchers there. TCPL was their own worst enemy. They had their elbows out and it wasn’t long before the landowners had enough of their attitude.
So the project stalled. Maybe now it will go ahead but Russ Gerling and TCPL’s own misread of the US caused at lot of the problem.
Wrong. Bammie was never going to let it go through regardless of how much perfume it was drenched in.
“it wasn’t long before the landowners had enough of their attitude.”
Please quote one case where farmers didn’t bitch about a pipeline.
WTF was that about?
The short answer to your question is…Yes.
I presume there were similar positive press releases put out by Notley and Trudeau…
Technically, the study actually shows that methane emissions did rise with the increased US oil and gas extraction.
I mean this is the issue with climate science in general. The study has some type of news release and a headline, but the actual data in the study often tells the complete opposite story.
It’s like climate scientists gather up some data and spend time and resources doing so, and they just want their efforts to get OUT there. But it won’t get out there unless the right spin is put on the study and the right abstract is presented.
Literally, 90% of climate studies headlines and spin is not supported by the basic evidence and data included in it. If you are into this science as more than a bystander, just start reading them and looking at the data and you will see what I mean.
In this case, yes oil and gas activities have lead to increased methane emissions. Natural gas is about 98% methane so as the companies start letting it escape (accidentally or deliberately) methane concentrations are going up. The slowdown in the 1990s came as result of the industry increasingly plugging up leaks and burning more of it to recycle the energy into operations. Now there is less impetus since natural gas has a very low value.
Virtually all of the methane increase in modern times has come from the oil and gas industry (not the cows like the environmentalist like to pretend) but this is no really an issue. Methane only a lifetime of 5 years max in the atmosphere and the global warming potential has been vastly over-blown as in the actual math with the actual forcing formulae shows that it is NOTHING to worry about at all.
And leave them on while you go out and just drive around for an hour.

“Please quote one case where farmers didn’t bitch about a pipeline”
That just means TCPL is going to have to put more effort into moving their pipeline through Nebraska. Their last effort was pretty poorly received.
I think this was done on behalf of the Saudi Oil interests. No one I’ll ever convinced even me that Obama was worried about the environment.
You get pockets of landowners who pretend to be concerned for environmental reasons…..but that is almost NEVER the truth. They simply want much, MUCH more money. It is basically an extortion attempt. Thankfully, there is the process of eminent domain to ensure that the “last landowner” doesn’t hold up a project that has been approved in the regulatory arena. And to be clear….nobody really owns land. They own certain rights to land…but at the pleasure of government.
This is a lesson for Canadians in how the true Chief Executive of Canada, Donald J. Trump, is boss and rides in like a hero to save what he can of the Canadian economy. He is more powerful than all of the Canadian socialist economy wreckers combined at this point including Trudeau.
May the barrelage flow, may the rig count flourish, may Canadians get over their socialist mental disorders, and may the welfare transfer payment coffers spill over.
Amen los deplorables . But i must say it is fruitless as the turd will claim it is the socialist policies that we are reaping the benifits from and stupid canacians will clap like seals begging for more horrible timing.
Ahh yes,… Earth whatever. Brings back many fond memories.

In a word: YES!
There are enough people out there who are prepared to use violence to ensure that this is never built that I am still not convinced that it will ever be built,
There are also the beginnings of another group of people who have had enough of the violence from that group of people (and who would also like jobs) that might supply some pushback.
I don’t think we’ve reached maximum violence yet — that will likely happen in the summer, rioting season — but I do think we’ve reached, or are beginning to reach, a new paradigm for how that will play out at least in the U.S.
Well those types seemed to vanish pretty fast in the case of the Dakota Access. Simple matter to bring in the National Guard and arrest them and haul them off. After all, the “right” to protest does not include violence.
Yes, Bill while a stronger GHG than CO2, it is measured in parts per billion, at a thousand millionths of the atmosphere. None of it matters to the climate.
