What students should be learning is that no one owes you and you don’t owe anyone financial or emotional support. The exceptions being consensual legal contracts (business, marriage) or government laws (too many, unfortunately). To compell others by force to support your emotional well being, financial well being and lifestyle choices based on historical grievances and identity polictics is itself incredibly abusive. Having the progressive ctrl-left dictate how everyone must think, speak and act is just as corrosive to individual choice and freedom as anything from the extreme right.
You’d think that progressives and liberal arts academics, being super intelligent and all, would understand that this is a counterproductive strategy. Either your ideological opposition will gain control and use those abusive power structures against you or the scapegoats of your policies will rebel and retaliate. If those political opponents and designated scapegoats make up a significant size and are supporting your institutions or business then your control freak craziness is likely to come back to bite you in the ass…hugely. Those in postsecondary institutions, government bureaucracies, entertainment and consumer industries might want to think about these risks.

Exactly JG … most people (the successful ones anyway) learn, early on, that emotions are ephemeral and tend to be counterproductive. Esp. ones in the range of NEGATIVE emotions. This explains in large part why leftists scream, rage, burn and break things … like toddlers having a temper tantrum … as an outlet for their political frustrations … while (new) conservatives quietly plan and plot (ex. Steve Bannon).
I often allow myself to get very emotional at: weddings, births, tear-jerker movies like Brian’s Song … etc. But I channel every butt-hurt emotion into a plan of action (if not revenge).

Many years ago, shortly after I started my post-secondary teaching position, I found out what schools were producing. Many of my students had an attitude of entitlement and that they weren’t expected to do much, let alone take any initiative. They simply sat there, expecting me to do all the work for them, including something as simple as punching holes in the course handouts.
When I was an undergrad more than 40 years ago, I quickly found out that if I wanted any benefit from the system, I had to make the first move and had to be prepared to do most, if not all, of the work. Once that became clear, my profs were usually quite accommodating.
We must redress their issues with emotional labour by replacing it with actual labour, cut off from the purse strings of privilege.
That would be a good teaching inflection point for their enhanced future well being and understanding of how rich black kids can be victims of racism.
They won’t have time to think about what others think, or how to think about that or how they think they should respond and what others might think.

To be fair, it has probably always been somewhat difficult to teach young people that no one owes you anything financially and emotionally. Most parents experience this entitled attitude with their own children. It is natural for parents to give to their children and it is natural for children to expect this to continue. Past generations, by necessity, were more quickly educated by reality that you need to learn to be self-sufficient once reaching adulthood. The mystery is why Universities want to prolong this childish entitlement attitude and emotional fragility instead of promoting self-sufficiency, maturity, stoicism and independence.
I figured that many of my students were brought up to be self-entitled and demanding. They were likely in for a very rude shock once they went into industry.
Unfortunately, many post-secondary institutions emphasize “team building” and crapola like that so that any hint of independence and self-reliance are quickly crushed. Being able to answer questions by oneself meant that one wasn’t a “team player”. Conformity is more important than ability.
