  1. Well, I suppose that after their hackneyed efforts to garner support they realized that there was none. I would take this as a responsible move and a victory.

  2. The little tit just doesn’t want to set a precedent by holding a referendum. The power brokers are worried that Canadians might like the idea and ask for more.

  3. The bungling of Sharia Monsef was too much to go with the Liberals plan of rigging the electoral system.

  4. The Liberals pet chimp memorized the lines that the power brokers fed him on that topic for no reason. What it was actually about he had no clue.

  5. How, when you are a failure yourself, (Justy) do you set up anything else to fail, would it not just be natural that anything this dolt touches would be a failure? Drama teaching camp councillor snowboard instructor etc..

  6. “Improving Canada’s democracy” is a worthwhile goal in general, but this initiative was ineptly handled from start to finish. About time they gave this travesty a proper burial.

  7. people should understand that a liberal promise is as valid as last week’s losing lottery ticket

  8. Since Potato Head’s promise to inflict electoral reform on the country was invalid in the first place, does that mean he’s guilty of actually breaking it? It doesn’t look like the Conservatives or Dippers will be able to profit from that one, even though the reason for him to back out of it was more a case of CYA than of sober second thought.

  9. The Liberals finally figured out that they had to choose between:
    1) having PR which would permanently
exclude any party from ever having a majority again and
exclude the Conservatives from ever holding government again and
force the Liberals to share power while being the lead in a Liberal/NDP coalition
    2) not have PR which would allow the Conservatives the ability to govern from time to time and allow themselves to govern with a majority from time to time
Looks like they prefer a majority.

  10. One of the Liberal’s biggest problems is they live in an echo chamber where everyone they talk to says the same thing.
That leads to idiotic policies like “reforming Canada’s electoral process” being taken up. “Everybody” says its a good idea. “Everybody” thinks ‘first past the post’ is unfair. “Everybody” thinks the sexy new multi-pass model from University of Zekendorf is the cat’s pajamas.
Then they poke their heads out of the echo chamber, and are all shocked and surprised that -nobody- like their ideas. That’s what seems to have happened here. They started doing it, and holy cr@p the wheels all fell off.
Picking the illegal immigrant chick as the tip of the spear was an unforced error though. That was just dumb.

  11. There were 287 hasty, often ill-considered, and not thought through if not down-right-impossible promises to put some sort of fowl in any pot that rattled. The number of things that Mr Trudeau was going to “… and if elected we will immediately commit $100 million dollars to…” are legion. And the more of these that he abandons, the better off the country will be. Unfortunately, beyond the politics of trying to get ahead of the crowd so he can claim to be their leader, the real limitation is that he has blown the budget on vanity projects, mostly for shady foreign interests, and we are about to find out just how bad the economy and the government’s finances really are; not that any of the bad news will be Mr Trudeau’s doing. It was all fake news, but I guess that was then…
And where are the contrasts between Mr Trumps launch out the door, and Mr Trudeau’s never-ending victory tours, eighteen months with nothing to show but a few tax increases and the repeal of section of the criminal code that made anal intercourse a crime?

  12. What a surprise! NOT! The next Liberal promise to be thrown under the bus will be the legalized marijuana promise. With Trump in power line-ups at the border as the US border guards search for weed would implode the economy. So I hope the juveniles that were hoping for legal weed are not too disappointed.
Reading the comments in the article illustrate how really dumb and stupid many Canadians are. FPTP is the only way that a democracy works, it ensures that the party with the backing of more of the voters than the other parties is the governing voice. A proportional representative governing body would allow a minority party to dictate terms to any other party that desired ruling power. A parliament of four parties, for arguments sake, could be broken down to 30% Liberals, 30% Conservatives, 30% NDP, and 10% Greens. In this instance a backroom deal could be dictated by the Greens to give any other party the majority, depending on which one was most anxious to attain power.

  13. The first thing he has done right since taking office, and it turns out to be deciding to not do one of the things he was doing wrong.

  14. People in the media like Andrew Coyne were part of the big push for Prop Rep.
It seems the media party doesn’t want efficiently functioning responsible government. They will do anything in their power sew the seeds of chaos and what would be more chaotic than having the NDP or Green party dictate policy?

  15. Just don’t hassle him too much – he might change his mind. Perpetual minority governments could bankrupt the country.

  16. Pierre’s little boy openly idolizes dictators and dictatorships and thinks China’s government is the absolute bomb. Somehow I cannot see anything good coming from letting him and his puppet masters tinker with the electoral process. Or anything else for that matter. Can’t we just send him back to the Aga’s island, give him a really big bag of pot and let him make sand castles for the next 3 years?

  17. The adults are waking up I see the comment section in our beloved G & M is now full of ticked off Liberals spouting anti Truedope sentiments never seen before..

  18. I for one welcome this lack of consensus, flip-flop, change of heart, or whatever other spin is put on it. The inanity of the claim of those who wanted to reform the voting system because “my vote doesn’t count under FPTP” was unbearable to listen to. Thank you, Justin Trudeau, for breaking that silly and unnecessary promise.

  19. It is apparent he realizes he ha no attraction to those on the right and he has displeased the left by not going far enough . So he must split the vote in the next election . After one year in , I think it is only a matter of time for a good portion of the middle abandons him. Oh well , he will still have the CBC !

  20. Finally some positive news. Let’s hope this ends hair brained schemes to amend a system that has operated effectively for 150 years. I suspect Liberal handlers have gone over with Jr the number of election they have won and the total years they have been in power and told him to change his mind. Under the system Conservatives can at least hope to gain a majority again sometime, other systems would not guarantee that ever.
Voters in Ont and BC when asked were in favour of the devil they know, no valid reason exists to change the system, unless you think E May should more say in public policy.

  21. The only reason he was elected was to legalize weed.
Hilary would have cleaned up if she’d thrown out the same lie Little Substitute Potato did.

  22. So I guess broken promises on electoral reform is one of “those things that Stephen Harper won’t do”.

  23. The Spawn Child caves again.
    Is anyone keeping score?
I don’t want to rush our lives but 3 years can’t come fast enough.
    Missing Prime Minister Harper yet?

  24. Millennials speculating on why Potato Head’s popularity is declining:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B2mXspeKoI
Notice how one young lady describes him as “hot as….” So there you have it, folks. He was voted into office by that age group because he was a dope-smoking pretty boy, not because he was a candidate for Mensa membership or a charismatic political leader.
Then again, his alleged daddy, Pierre, was first voted in as PM for similar reasons.

  25. Good. They needed to have a referendum or not do this at all. I am ok with either one. I think it is only the NDP that will be furious about this.

  26. “The first thing he has done right since taking office…”
And it comes with a big bonus: it has driven the NDP and Lizzie May into conniptions!

  27. California needs a referendum to raise or levy any tax; but nothing holds back the spending. Be careful what you wish for.

  28. When Trudeau first promised that “this will be the last election with first-past-the-post”,I burst out laughing!
There is no way in Hell a Liberal will EVER change anything that works for THEM!
Now,should they lose in 2019, look for Trudeau to AGAIN promise to look at a more “fair” method of electing our MP’s,which is always safe to do when you’re in Opposition, and it always is a good weapon to use against the government.
Yep,this one was guaranteed to NOT happen.
Maybe Trudeau is listening to advice from Jean Chretien, who played the Canadian voters like a three dollar fiddle for years.

  29. If the drama teacher really wanted to make Canada into a democracy, he would change the structure for electing MP’s and Senators so that each province gets a quota based on population. This will never happen. The only way Western Canada is going to get a fair system is to separate.

  30. Here in Camelot, for one brief shining moment common sense prevailed. Don’t expect common sense or intelligent decisions to come again under the liberal regime, that’s not in their DNA. It was nice to see the dippers having a brain hemmorage over the news.

  31. “One of the Liberal’s biggest problems is they live in an echo chamber where everyone they talk to says the same thing…”
    …he wrote, on SDA.

  32. I think what got to the ears of the cabinet table was rumours of rumblings from the blu-lib caucus. They’ve likely been getting heat from the constituents over potato heads excessive vacationing on the public dime and cash for access, its likely giving those old enough to remember a sense of dejavu. The voters in those ridings might be getting recollections of adscam and contracts of little to no value that where merely fronts for illegal liberal fund raising.
This was done to keep the blu-lib vote on side. The radical left can be bought off at election time.

  33. Well that’s the first positive thing I’ve heard about Shiny Potato for a while 😀

  34. “”One of the Liberal’s biggest problems is they live in an echo chamber where everyone they talk to says the same thing…”
    …he wrote, on SDA.”
    … she wrote on SDA

  35. I guess Little Potato finally saw the writing on the wall with his town hall meetings lots of people angry. Job loses taxing Canadians will get Little Potato ousted 2019. He thinks he is fire proof.

  36. It is telling that the NDP, who never had a chance at forming a government, were unhappy that Zoolander has gone back on this promise.

  37. Well I don’t really blame him. But next time he says that something absolutely, positively is going to happen, we’ll know that means “maybe”.

  38. The whole thing was bait and switch. The libranos promised ‘electoral reform’ to get the ndp and green vote. They had no intention of ever following through. It worked. The libranos went from 3rd place to first and the ndp went back to 3rd place because their vote collapsed – especially in quebek.
The ndp and greens desperately want proportional representation. They got conned and today they know it.
    A standard librano tactic.

  39. Lizzie Mao says that “young people are weeping all over Canada” because Juthtin the snow boarding potato lied to get elected… I mean Juthtins boss’s Gerry (the undertaker) Butts and Katie Telfraud instructed the drama queen potato to lie… Juthtin is simply the sociopath that acts like he cares and reads the scripts as they are written… “young people are weeping all over Canada”… “and those working hard to join the weeping class”.

  40. Zoolander didn’t know he was lying.
He’s just a sock-puppet with a famous name. He doesn’t make, originate, or even understand policy.
He’s just a front man for the LPC brand.

  41. That statement reminds me of, “Right this moment there are crosses burning in Prince George.”

  42. Its like the time a liberal leader went before the electorate and said:
“Da gee hees tee wee well keel et”
That was an out and out lie to take advantage of diseffected conservative voters. But in that case ol screwface tried to maintain the lie by tweeking the law.
This one because it was read into the speech from the throne which is subject to a confidence vote could be considered as contempt of Parliament.

  43. if electoral reform cannot address the tail wagging the dog circumstance we have in Canada then there is no point in trying to change anything.

  44. Is anyone even remotely surprised? The Libbies finally got their pig snouts back in the trough; they’re hardly stupid enough to sabotage their only route to majority government. They probably put that twit Monsaf in charge of the file just to make sure it went up in a blazing ball of fire.
And nobody sure should expect anything other than another Lib majority in 2019. Canadians still luuuuuuvvvvv Justin. Some of the teflon may have worn off, but nowhere near enough to take him out. It’ll be 2023 before he’s genuinely vulnerable.

  45. And nobody sure should expect anything other than another Lib majority in 2019. Canadians still luuuuuuvvvvv Justin. Some of the teflon may have worn off, but nowhere near enough to take him out. It’ll be 2023 before he’s genuinely vulnerable.
And Trump can never win the Presidency.

  46. Different personal dynamics in play. Americans couldn’t stand Hillary; she was about as likeable as a rattlesnake. That negated any likeability deficit that Trump may otherwise have had.
And yes, I think Canadians remain shallow enough to elect Justin again despite whatever bumbling he does between now & 2019. We were shallow enough to elect him the first time, for pity’s sake.
