2. I pay $75/month for gas and electric for my 1,500 square foot home in New Jersey (ok, my central air died a couple years back and I didn’t get it fixed, so that partially explains why its so low). My heart goes out to this woman and the rest of you Canadians. Time to get out torches and pitchforks.

   Yes, no doubt you do, and that’s not an issue.
   However what you pay to heat a house in Langly BC is a fraction of what the rest of Canada has to pay, and the TurdoTax is going to hit us the hardest.

7. I live in Ontario, in a modest house in a small city. I have gas heat, gas hot water and a gas stove. My hydro bill is about 110 a month. I have had the gas stove for a few years now, and when I bought it my hydro bill went down about 20%. I can’t really tell what it did to my gas bill, due to equal billing and variable weather, but I didn’t really notice a change in the gas bill. When my dryer craps out I will replace it with a gas one.

11. The only way that Le Dauphin Petite Pomme de Terre can appear to save face on this issue is to pin Canada’s carbon-tax at 1.5%, the amount our emissions contribute to global GHGs. They will have their TurdoTax, but it will be merely a gesture, however justified by the numbers.

    They should relocate Parliament to Alert, Nunavut 82°30′05″N 62°20′20″W with a record low wind chill of -64.7C this might improve their concentration if they don’t turn stone cold first.

15. So, for comparison’s sake, let’s talk about a 2800 sq ft home built in 97, with 2×6 construction, thermo vinyl windows, a gas central system with a heat pump, in the lefty universe of Victoria.
    I put in the HP in 2008, under the PMSH Home Renovation program. Got tired of mid-winter gas bills topping out at $200+ per month, while turning it down to 15 every night. Hydro was around $70/month. Got a further subsidy from the province on the pump. The idea was to be more efficient, drop the overall gas costs, and have 24/7 climate control as well.
    End result, I wouldn’t change a thing, the HP is great and I recommend to anyone in the BC climate. Newer systems are more feasible to sub-zero weather, to minus 10, where your gas backup comes in, caveat, no sysytem is perfect.
    Two years after the HP install, BCHydro comes up with its Two tier power billing. Nice, right after leading people into more Hydro sourced heating systems…..
    its been a cold month here in Whacktoria, by these standards (not looking for sympathy my friends, spent some years in Ft Nelson….). I expect my Hydro to be $200 for the month, and my gas to be about the same. Once the freezing goes away, I will be back to monthly, $120 Hydro, $40 gas, for the rest of the spring/winter.
    For the record, many new homes here are being built with baseboard electric heat only. Developers have to pay Fortis to bring in the gas, and they hesitate at putting in heat pumps. Fireplaces are verboten! Not saying builders should be forced to put in central heating, but, homes are very difficult to retrofit for central heating, to allow gas or heat pumps.

    if we had linger sustained periods of sub-zero, I would do as Hans has done, and blow in more insulation in the attic, its a good idea for anybody.

    How about Trump gets Keystone up and running, we get all your tar sands oil, refine it into nat gas and gasoline (sorry, “petrol”) and then sell it all back to you guys at a profit? Then your boy wonder can put more carbon taxes on it and you get to buy it at the customer level and go broke quicker while he uses all those Canadian tax bucks to subsidize your very own muzloid invasion and your LGBQWERTY  K-12 indoctrination programs while you chop down more trees in an effort to keep warm and cook food without paying obscene energy bills.
    Win-win. No?
    (I do apologize for the snark.  I just couldn’t resist.  But honest to God, I do feel horrible about what you guys are going through. I’m afraid your collective pain is gonna have to get a whole lot worse before any semblance of sanity in government comes to you country,)
