  1. Focus groups? Like Liberal party partisan’s? Their donors? Their unions? What a farce!
All in the name of inventing new taxes, that hurt others, not Liberals…..creating new, expensive, flimsy programs of marginal value, and nailing those nasty awful terrible communication companies, while giving free money to very mediocre musicians and arteests to sponge more off the government dime.
    LIEberal economics 101
    (clueless twits)

  2. Government with referendum as an option was not something that hovered around the fringes of the Reform Party. It was a key tenant that would allow the citizens a tool to counter top down government.
Yes I am sure there is considerable belief by those threatened by such citizen involvement that individuals do not have the intelligence to make informed decisions. During my time with Reform a priority was always keeping citizens informed and raising awareness of how decisions impacted their world and their children’s world. Decision making begets responsibility.

  3. I have a feeling that Netflix, like Tim Horton’s, would be a third rail for the government. Canadians care about their creature comforts a lot more than their freedoms.

  4. California has government by referendum in a lot of ways. You can’t raise taxes without a ballot measure; but spending has no such requirement.

  5. Referendums won’t work because the average low-information voter is too effing stupid. Perhaps there is a more gentile way to state this.

  6. Yes, Winston Churchill once said that the best argument against democracy was a 5 minute conversation with the average voter.

  7. My local City Council, with the aid and abetment of our grossly-overpaid City Manager keep focus-grouping new sales taxes and property tax assessments for our little city of pop. 50K. SURPRISE !! Their focus-groups ALWAYS come back saying YES !! there is widespread support for NEW ADDED TAXES !! Yes ! the people have spoken !! MORE TAXES. … and then … they put the measure on the ballot. And then … the REAL PEOPLE speak at the ballot box … NO !! FcukYO U !! Hells NO !! We don’t want MORE TAXES. We’re already be RAPED in one hole … why would we vote to get RAPED in another ?
And yet … next year … more focus-groups. More focus group support. More NO votes. Its time for a NEW city Manager. One who reads fewer leftist political message boards.

  8. So much wisdom..Government by referendum does not work..
Assuming government worked in the first place.
    Any evidence for that belief?
Based on the current state of finances world wide and here at home.. I would suggest the evidence is in.
Government does no work, it exists to restrain the fools and bandits who are born to each generation, at a cost to all who chose to be productive.
Then being akin to cancer it grows without reason or restraint until it fouls up everything.
Destroying that which it claims to protect.
And the fools nod their heads and chant
“We need someone to do something about everything that makes us fear the sky may fall.”
We are from the government, we are here to help you..
Referendums cannot help, when kleptocrats write the questions.

  9. we must be stupid because we always vote for people who are dumber than we are, and then wonder why we get the results we do.
