That question was raised in last night’s edition of The John Batchelor Show. It definitely sounds like the Chinese Central Committee has gone ape over what happened and it may be deciding what an appropriate response will be.
The issue is Taiwan’s status. China has always seen it as a renegade province, illicitly occupied by the descendants of the KMT refugees who fled there after the civil war ended. Taiwan has always seen itself as free from communist rule. (In fact, for many years, its foreign shortwave broadcast service was called the Voice of Free China.)
In the last 70 years, Beijing has had little say in Taiwan. Now that the country’s been governed from Taipei, the descendants of the KMT may consider themselves as ethnic Chinese, but not citizens of China. It’s time that Beijing finally grows up and accepts that.
An excellent move on Trump’s part. Never play by the opponent’s rules. The west has been tiptoeing around China for decades, during which China has established colonies in Africa, advanced it’s economy by devaluing its currency and is now claiming territorial waters that belong to the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan.

Actually, it is Beijing. It’s in keeping with Pinyin, which is how Standard Chinese would appear in Latin script. Beijing was adopted as the official spelling more than 30 years ago.
