Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett and her Ontario counterpart have signed a historic agreement with the Algonquins of Ontario that will eventually see wide swaths of eastern Ontario signed over to the Indigenous people as part of a modern treaty.
The deal encompasses roughly 36,000 square kilometres, stretching from Ottawa to North Bay, including large parts of the Ottawa Valley. (Parliament Hill itself falls into the catchment area.)

That works out to 450 hectares (1,112 acres) per Indian according to the article’s estimate of there being 8000 Algonquins for which this applies. Along with the cash and a low-ball land value of $2000 per hectare we’re talking close to a million dollars per Indian. Will it be in fee simple and deeded individually or will it be a communist settlement to be held collectively by the Band? If the later, then they will be back at the trough in short time. Does the settlement extinguish all other racial entitlements? Do the benefits accrue equally to anyone 1/16 or better in racial purity or to anyone who knows the Chief? Any DNA testing required? So many questions, so few details.
What “Ontario counterpart” would the federal Indian Affairs minister have? Section 91 (24) of the Constitution clearly limits aboriginal affairs to the federal government, rightly or wrongly creating responsibilities that it must deal with. A provincial government is out of line to get mixed up in this.

Note that there has never been a “CFB Rockcliffe Park”; the former CFB Rockcliffe (no Park) is on the other side of the Manor Park subdivision from Rockcliffe Park, the iconic Ottawa home of the rich and powerful. Wiki has a map of the Mississauga that shows them in Ontario with the Algonquin further east in Quebec. Did Trudeau just give a billion in land and money to people that didn’t own it? In 1989, I was down from Vancouver Island visiting a logger in Washington State to view his skyline logging operation and all he wanted to talk about was the need to breed-out all traces of the Indian race. My understanding was that west of Port Arthur and Fort William the settelments with the Natives was through treaties and in Ontario and Quebec the Government
bought the land from the Natives. what land they wanted for themselves they did not sell. It was all settled in the east with no problems. When they started negoteations out west the people of the east showed no interest of those “Western Problems. Now I understand the East has and will continue to have insurmountable problems. The Natives and the aboriginals ( Yes there is both ) will all get on the take, like The tribes in New Brunswick claiming All of the province. That is why ” Harper ” refused to obey the U N orders and decreed all Natives will deal directly with Companies that want to put a road, pipeline or whatever on their land.
