  1. Seems a long time ago I wrote a parody, Muslims of London.
Well, it wrote itself really. So easy, so funny, so sad, so true.
    They will never change.

  2. She did tell them what they had to do to get permission to put posters up. I worked for both the Progressive Party of Canada and the Conservative party of Canada, along with several charitable associations. I put up posters all over SW Saskatchewan. Yes, you should ask permission to put up a poster, especially on private property. Some places have poster boards. It’s just the way things are!

  3. Media warning as in Toronto Star. No need for a puke bag on this article.
Canadians favour screening. “Two-thirds of Canadians want prospective immigrants to be screened for “anti-Canadian” values, a new poll reveals, lending to idea stirring controversy in political circles.”
“More importantly for Leitch, the poll shows that the idea is especially popular among Conservative supporters with 87 per cent backing the idea and just 8 per cent opposed compared to 57 per cent support among Liberals and 59 per cent for New Democrat voters.”

  4. It’s been years since I last saw “American Werewolf in London”. I didn’t like it very much, though any movie with Jenny Agutter in it can’t be all bad.

  5. // prospective immigrants to be screened for “anti-Canadian” values, //
    Mine or yours?
The U.S. used to have a screening procedure, mainly attempting to refuse Commies.
I imagine that about as many would admit to that as Canadians would admit to having smoked pop.
A new US immigrant once was asked the loyalty question, about whether she
” advocated revolution or force or violence to alter the constitutional form of government of the United States.”
She hesitated for a bit and then answered “force.”

  6. I began watching videos of 9/11 tonight and after listening to first-hand accounts I have to say, it would have to be a very moderate Muslim, like Tarek Fatah, that I would welcome into the country. Life hasn’t been the same since 9/11 but all we’ve done is accommodate, accommodate, accommodate. That’s when we’re not apologizing, and they’re not taking offense at something.
It would be good for everyone else to watch a few of these videos on this 15th anniversary; it might put some steel in our spines. After all these years, and what has happened since, I feel an anger I haven’t felt before.
How many more immigrants did McCallum say were coming this year? Over 300,000?

  7. The so called extremists in the name of the religion of Islam may not want us but they seem to enjoy what we have and hate us for it. Any politician who espouses the idea of screening immigrants even for respecting our values and laws is taken to task. Who is laughing?

  8. “// prospective immigrants to be screened for “anti-Canadian” values, //
    Mine or yours?”
I guess what’s required is a clear definition of what is “a value”. Is polygamy a value? Is forced marriage? Is honour killing?
Reducing the argument to “my values are as good as yours” or “who’s to judge what is a Canadian value”, as some opponents of screening claim, is an exercise in absurdity. There are some absolutes, some immutable principles or values* that societies abide by. The three mentioned above are not, to my knowledge, part of what most Canadians consider as “values”.
    * Unlike me, some do not equate principles with values.

  9. That will only happen if the media drops their “Rah, Rah, Justin” coverage. They won’t. He is a product of media hype, so they must continue to push the charade. They will double down on keeping negative immigrant stories out of the news and regularly lecturing Canadians about inclusiveness.

  10. Our social values need to be spelled out. Moral values can’t be legislated in a free society but laws to prevent harm to a society need to be strong on both counts.

  11. “Is polygamy a value? Is forced marriage? Is honour killing?” You could add female genital mutilation, as Ayaan Hirsi Ali knows all too well, to that list.
LindaL, it does not matter one iota what level of useless mediocrity, in this case shiny mediocrity, that the Liberal Party puts forward most of the media will promote it and denigrate any conservative unless they are very liberal lite.

[French Prime Minister Manuel] Valls said there were 15,000 people on the radar of police and intelligent services who were in the process of being radicalized.
“There will be new attacks, there will be innocent victims… this is also my role to tell this truth to the French people,” Valls said.

  13. So…. Screening immigrants for Canadian values is UnCanadian . And the majority of conservative leadership candidates support this . So we get Liebrils and Liebrils Lite . Well quit phoning me for donations . I guess when you stand for nothing you fall for anything and everything.

  14. My parents and I became Canadian citizens more than 50 years ago. Back then, immigrants could apply for citizenship, but there was a requirement that they had to demonstrate some knowledge about the country.
I don’t recall how that was tested as my parents never specifically mentioned anything specific about it. (Being a minor at the time, I was exempt and was granted citizenship on my behalf by the government.)
I do know that there was some material that they were given as part of the procedure as I made use of it in high school. It was a set of small books that covered Canadian history (including material that I was never taught in school, such as the capture and occupation of the city of Quebec during the American Revolution by forces led by Benedict Arnold) and government (for example, the Statute of Westminster and its significance for Canada).
It was after a period of at least 5 years that one could make an application, and that time would have been enough to become familiar with what those books covered.
Over the years, the requirements for citizenship have been diluted and I think that started under PET. Now it seems that one has to simply set foot on Canadian soil and that’s more than enough qualification to become a citizen.
Can anyone tell me how these new immigrants have adequately demonstrated their suitability to become Canadians? If what my parents had to learn was considered good enough, and our mother tongue was neither English nor French, why is it considered to be excessive nowadays? Why does my country consider me a bigot for disagreeing with current policy?
Canadian values, indeed! My parents proved themselves worthy to be in this country and, later, I did as well when I officially swore my allegiance to the Queen as part of a job I had at the time.

  15. For all those here who dwell in the Liberal loving province of Ontariowe tomorrow could be an early Christmas. Madam Wynne had a scare, she lost a byelection in a riding which has been Liberal since it’s inception. I can hardly wait for the freebies, maybe a free turkey for Thanksgiving, coupons for when we run out of money after paying our hydro and utility bills and sundry taxes on everything we need to survive. Yeah, I’m expecting her come out in a red and white suit with all her dud minnisters carring the bags of goodies for all their subjects.

  16. // absolutes, some immutable principles or values //
    +
That’s about my view, although one can’t “abide by” an absolute.
Laws which attempt to relate practices to the values are the best a society can do.
And these are matters of political argument: for example is our voting system or some potential “reform” more democratic?
Nor could any complex society have just the same values for everyone.
I think we can demand of “new Canadians” what we demand of ourselves.
But that leaves room for variety, including in clothing choices.
