Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Harper did an amazing job holding back the surreal statist storm, which now again ruinously infects our largest cities and eastern seaboard.
The fact is none of this matters to them or their anti-ideology of progressivism, is because facts don’t matter, just feelings. Thus:
– there’s no need for a theory of costs because statists only measure the benefit of their tax loot, never the opportunity cost.
– since they’re smarter than us, since they know all about the failures of liberty, they can assume the economy and we will come around.
– if not, well everyone else is stupid and should be shut up with the help of our properly educated media and universities.
– because of all that, facts don’t matter, just the narrative, their appeal to and power over the fawning masses, the “rich” paying the tab.
Too bad, so sad, but true. Our so-called education has left us with a Gen X and Millenial cohort unable to function at a basic literacy level or do math beyond adding or removing zeros (not everyone, but a lot of them), and conditioned to believe someone else should serve their entitlement.
They’re flying high so are fat and happy. As usual a hard landing, a haircut and diet are in the offing, but they (yes they are low information voters, don’t worry they’ll never find out someone said that) for the moment haven’t a clue, giddy at their new found political awareness and willingness to find our for themselves what Trudeau statism can do to Canada, believing the good life just happens.
I don’t like being stuck on that ride; not one bit; how can we allow ruinous statism like we see in ON to continue? What kind of a people are we?
Add to that, if Hillary and her gang of globalist statists get in down south, the world is economically screwed, with the usual “dislocations” to follow.
Going to keep saying it until studies like this stop coming out.
Go Galt. Stop giving them the fruits of your time and labor. This western Sanction of the Victim has to end.
42.4% sounds right for those making less than $100K. Those making more are paying well over 50%.
Kinda makes you want to put in a garden, don’t it? Grow some grain, make beer out of it and drink your life away.
In other news, Shiny Pony sees no need to revitalize manufacturing in Canada. Guess he figures we’ll all just go on UI.
Ha! Those aren’t property taxes ! You want property taxes ?!! Come to CA where we are raped by BOTH State taxes AND local property taxes.
And nowwwww … PG&E has just SUBSTANTIALLY (as in 40% increase) raised electrical and natural gas rates. This is REALLY a tax … because it has been approved by the CAPUC … the very government agency legislated to PROTECT the Consumer (of a monopolized energy system) has SKREWWWED the Consumer … all in the name of ‘being green’ … because HIGH RATES will FORCE the Consumer to cut back on energy use. The LEFT is killing our countries !! Enough !!!
Come to CA
November Foxtrot Whisky … that’s like telling someone to Golf Foxtrot Yankee
I guess it’s the “average” family but this seems quite low to me. Alberta’s combined income tax rate in my bracket is 48%.
The best part of all this is reading the stories about how Canadian don’t save enough (newsflash, there is nothing left to save), so the governments need to ramp up CPP deductions, leaving Canadians with even less, etc. It would be funny if it wasn’t real life….
Trust me … I Am Outta Here … ASAP !
I showed my wife an article about how Idaho has become a state of “my people”. The only downside is that it puts us that much closer to her hardcore leftist sister in Montana. Ugh, the fewer family functions with her, the better. Maybe I need to consider Sask. and renounce my citizenship.
Exactly!! Go Galt, don’t play – don’t pay.
This article illustrates the huge tax disparity between employees and the self-employed. A self-employed person with reasonably good business sense will pay far less in total taxes than some employee. This is especially true north of 60 where over 80% of the employees are government workers with obscene salaries and outrageous pension benefits. It’s fine by me if they’re paying a greater percent in taxes.
According to the study, the ‘average Canadian family’ paid 42% of their income in taxes. Sales and other consumer taxes are 27% of those taxes. Smart people can choose how they spend their money to pay less taxes.
How else are you gonna pay all the cops to roam the countryside, wildernesses and lakes to make sure nobody is enjoying a beer in a boat or snowmobile?***spit***
The Police are grossly underfunded in Canada at a time
when crime rates are increasing to dangerous levels …
and we’re not just talking about violent crime …
Canada is the white-collar crime capital of the world …
this is where money is laundered …
and who investigates spending irregularities in government?
maybe the Police could if they weren’t busy dealing with
drunks (like you) on snowmobiles …
wise up
It’s people like you that are responsible for the ludicrous tax rate that we’re subjected to.
Well done.
Alberta leads the way. Who would have thought that raising taxes would lead to less government revenue? Mygawd, these Dippers are stupid.
Alberta in worst recession since government began recording data in 1980s as deficit balloons to $10.9 billion
The fiscal update shows the government now expects to borrow $7 billion this year for operating expenses – to keep the lights on at government facilities – which is 31 per cent higher than the $5.4-billion in direct borrowing the province had originally budgeted.
[…]
The province is also pulling in less money than budgeted in personal income tax and corporate income tax — and also less money from taxes on fuel and cigarettes as the fiscal update shows cash-strapped Albertans are smoking less, driving less and gambling less than expected.
Wasn’t it Kipling who said, “one can’t have too much red wine, too many books or too much ammunition”…or something along those lines. So I think those 3 things are a pretty good start.
If Canada is the white collar crime capital of the world, and I don’t dispute that, then where have the cops been all these years?
Chasing guys having a beer on snow machines. That’s where. That is their particular expertise. No more money for the cops. They haven’t earned it.
I pay three to four times in tax’s over what my household consumes annually for “the basics”, food, water, shelter & all other essentials. Piss on them all.
Forces me to seriously think about cashing in and laying about with absolute minimal further contribution to this d*ckhead Progressive society we’ve become.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all in what a useless government can spand taxpayers money on, Limo rides, Lounge access, picture portraits, etc., etc., etc., along comes a government program that suspends belief. Wait till the BOY Blunder gets news of this and incorporates it into his acceptance and tolerance program.

Some comments, at the risk of stating the obvious:
– marginal rates, the top rate one pays on some earnings, are not the same as average taxation rates, though depending on personal circumstances.
– Example: a tax client earns about $10K net income less than under average and has an average tax rate of 20% and a 30% marginal rate.
– self-employed people have more deductions, but they have more costs too, including paying both ends of CPP, plus half their employees’ premiums.
– Harper, and maybe Martin (but not without a lot of resistance and fiscal chicanery) staunched the growth of taxation and even reduced the burden.
– Justin and the progressives are lined up to the trough for the next flood of coerced private largesse, at least to previous heights, probably much higher.
– Luckily we are in an era of openness instead of the Harper meanness. After all, look at all those un-muzzled unemployed scientists, now better off.
– soon we will all be free to be as poor as the government wants us to be, while being free to say what the statists think.
– at 42% tax plus 37% necessities, the average family making a reasonably comfortable income has 20% left to run their households, put kids through school and other activities, have a little bit of fun maybe and maybe, maybe actually save a little bit for their future.
– Ironically the working poor are the most hurt by these neo SJWs, who having crushed them are now turning middle income earners into state serfs.
If we could reverse that 20% with the roughly 40% government takes, our society would enjoy prosperity people can only imagine.
But the sheeple are afraid to let go of the government tether, propagandized and conditioned to believe there is no other real choice.
Statist think they own virtue so can improve citizens’ lives. But that’s not true and people do have a choice.
Instead statism’s evident failures are repackaged as evidence of their necessity and a birthright to the nation.
It will take a long time to unpack the tradeoff between equality and freedom. That debate hasn’t happened in earnest for decades.
There’s a least fifty years of collectivist leavings on the pan of our political culture of individualism. Political pussies won’t do it nor will the neo-overlords.
Well of course to point out the obvious:
You can’t afford to pay for fresh water to flush your toilet, much less food, clothing and housing; because you’ve spent it all on TAX remittances.
You don’t even get to circle the drain anymore;
after taxes you just have a putrid odor.
So who’s stinkin’ up the joint?
That would be yer:
Taxed U’Infernal Revenue Disservice (or TURD fer short)!
Matthew 23:25 “Woe to you, scribes and … hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity.
The implementation of serfdom never gets old, just ask George Soros and his paid minions.

“But the sheeple are afraid to let go of the government tether……”
….and it’s easier to do nothing while living off other peoples money, especially when you’ve become an infantile society of drug addicts and many other such losers.
Its Western Societies spiral down from the Progressive corruption at the top as it feeds society with ever more dependence and street level anarchy to produce more dependant sheeple who will vote for further dependence.
You can’t afford to pay for fresh water to flush your toilet, much less food, clothing and housing; because you’ve spent it all on TAX remittances.
If you manage your personal finances that badly, then you’re likely stupid and poor. The poor remain poor because they don’t choose to wisely spend the money they get. There’s nothing that says someone deserves compensation for making stupid financial decisions.
The proverb “a fool and his money are soon parted.” is over 450 years old; at least since the year 1557, when it was used by the poet Thomas Tusser in the poem “Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry”, and the saying can be found within:
“A foole and his money be soone at debate: which after with sorow repents him too late.”
As for Shamrock’s tradeoff between equality and freedom.
Freedom is not free. Free men are not equal. Equal men are not free.
— J. Pournelle
I admit that’s exactly where I got that point but couldn’t remember the name. I think it is an example of understated genius. Thanks Jean.

Kenji,
I highly recommend an appointment with Dr Johnny Walker to deal with your socialist sis-in-law. Then you discuss the Vajayjay in Chief and her corruption and her protection of those awful Wall Streeters that fund her.
Cuz Bernie “Three Houses” said so.
Another Ian, Thanks for that, I needed a good laugh after all the news about the Liberals and Greenies this weekend. Much Appreciated.
The poor remain poor because they don’t choose to wisely spend the money they get.
One would think it’s because they didn’t keep it, and not spend it and/or exchange it for some other form of wealth.
Idaho, Wyoming and Alaska are all good alternatives to Californicatia, where BOHICA is the state motto.
So Jean, in your learned opinion, it’s completely stupid (and the reason that some people are poor) to try to better the lives of their children via education. Or heaven forbid, moms staying at home (instead of getting a job) to raise the family.
For sure – they deserve your disdain. TWO THUMBS UP, jean!!!!!!
Just try to state your own opinions clearly and concisely and refrain from misunderstanding what you think others have stated to flog your personal agenda. You’re obviously not qualified to interpret what you think others are writing.
Don’t believe everything you think, don’t forget to take your meds, …and have a nice day.
I gather ‘tongue in cheek’ doesn’t go far these days…
1 March 1884, The Accountant, pg. 8, col. 1:
Q— Who was the cleverest man in the world?
A. — Noah. Why ? Because he succeeded in floating a limited company whilst the rest of the world was in involuntary liquidation, and all the banks were covered.
And George Soros…not so much; as he just finances strife throughout the world, including Hillaryious.

Financial marauders don’t cut much ice, they just buy the chill on freedom.
After all, it isn’t in their ‘financial interest’ or it won’t get them a politician who will cut them the legislation they want for more profit at the expense of the local population.
Cheers

Back at you.
Family income $71,000. Taxes: Fed+prov+gst+pst+property taxes+bcmsp premiums = 16500 or 23%
of gross family income. There must be a lot of hidden taxes to add a further 20% to that.
