Look – I know that an inward looking America is not good for Canada. Canada has resources the world needs and if America is strong – that means a weak Canadian dollar which helps us all.

  10. Police office shots and kills family dog during 5 year olds birthdays party. Why? Because he had a warrant for someone that lived at that address previously…ten years ago. entered the backyard of the property with out notifying anyone and the dog “lunged” at him. No shit sherlock…… went back to his cruiser , grabbed a rifle and then shot the dog in the head. he felt he was in eminent danger. What a pussy.

  11. With the Olympics fast approaching, this is a timely article with which I agree. How many of us have OUR hobbies subsidized by the government?
    What’s the point in subsidizing Olympic athletes?
    If people do devote themselves full-time to something and put in the 10,000 hours Malcolm Gladwell argues are required for mastery, they can become very good at it, if also possibly a little narrow in their interests and experience. If they want to do that, and if other people and organizations put up the money that allows them to make a living at their physical skill, whatever it is, fine. It’s their life.
    What I have trouble understanding is why a government should compensate them for what is in effect their monomania. What’s the point? Yes, if we as a country spend enough on coaches, trainers, technicians, analysts, dieticians, and these days maybe also consulting pharmacologists, we too can have more gold medals than countries that don’t spend as much as we do. But what of it? In real arms races you at least get national defence as a result or maybe new territories. What is the purpose of sports arms races? We’re a rich country. We could buy more gold medals if we chose to. But why should we choose to?

  16. Because the Olympics are not and never have been about personal glory. They are about national gladiators in an arena vying for bragging rights. The personal stuff is to ensure the kids work hard enough to look good against the world.
