More evacuations this evening — the evacuation center at Anzac (southeast of Fort Mac) is now under threat.

  5. Greg, they were reporting from a time zone at least 3 hours ahead of us. At the time of this report the Evacuation order would only just have gone out and would not have made this news cycle. It was still a nice day, so far as they knew, in Fort McMurray.

I was talking with a friend who has several relatives and friends in Fort mac. he was in contact with three of them who had lost everything except their lives. three houses and all their possessions, brutal.

After her slurred and incoherent speech, she was assisted off the stage, during which she blurted out that Omar Khadr had more class than the entire Conservative cabinet.
    She is completely lacking in sense or tact.

  10. There is no confirmation that “climate change” is a factor in the fire. It was indicated that El Nino played a role in the unseasonably warm temperatures. Anyone using the fire to make a claim about climate change is exploiting the situation to suit their agenda.

  17. Has political correctness struck again. Every article I could find from major news outlets regarding the Fort McMurray use the term “Air Tanker”. In a saner age, they were realistically called “Water Bombers”!

  18. What a contrast in “culture” … All I remember of Katrina, is hundreds of parked school busses, flooded next door to people standing on rooftops. How come Canadians actually know how to DRIVE their busses ?

  24. So in spite of continuous news channel surfing, I have yet to see any comment about may have caused the fire, was it a lighting strike or a careless camper/smoker. Has to be one of those. Another thing(again in spite of channel surfing the american news channels), no apparent notice of this huge event on American TV except for a short ticker tape across the CNN screen. Americans, no wonder they are so ignorant of anything outside of their borders. News media wearing tunnel vision glasses. My feelings are hurt. sniff sniff

  25. With Lizzie May in the mix now, something I hate to acknowledge is that she once called Canadian voters stupid. Now our Federal Liberal government is promising to match (MATCH, pardon the pun) Canadian donations to Ft. Mac. This same Federal Government that has no qualms about gifting billions of Canadian taxpayer dollars to overseas nations no strings attached are only going to match donations to a Canadian community that has been devastated.

  26. To true, dry forests burn.. wild fires have been with us since the dawn of man, but only a complete tard would try to gloat over this and use it to further their ideology. Perhaps it should be pointed out that in 1871 there was a horrendous bush fire in Wisconsin with a loss of life between 1200 and 2400 people.. that predates SUVs, and the evil oil industry by a fair margin… Or the Matheson fire of 1922 with a loss of life of 223 plus

If our Prime Mincer and his cabal really believed the bullsh*t of climate change they better put a stop payment on the recent multi-billion (or is it brazilian?) cheque they pledged to other countries to combat climate change at the Paris Conference…real, hardworking Canadians NEED that money now themselves.
    Beware if the Fort MacMurray fires don’t become Canada’s “black swan” event.

  28. Is it not possible to ring communities with permanent fire breaks? 200 meters, 500 meters, whatever it takes. Clear out all trees, keep the grass, brush short. A nice meadow. Call it ‘green space’. Certainly not possible in many cases but deep in the heart of the bush why not?

    All a Scam – Your absolutely right, if Fort Mac was a Lebanese/ Syrian port city they’d have sent a warship at no cost to the foreign “victims”.
    BTW – Turdeau already got my 2% and Nutley my 3% donation for this year via their 2015 tax increases. Not a penny more, so spend it wisely geniuses.

  30. The one picture I will never get out of my mind regarding the fire in Fort Mac is not the swirling smoke and falling embers as recorded by dash cams of fleeing vehicles. It is not the fire surrounding or burning some of my favourite landmarks. It is one lone helicopter in the air. All other fire fighting aircraft were on the ground but this one that was flying repeated missions from the river to downtown where it drenched a building over and over and over again. But it wasn’t the hospital where many sick and injured people awaited rescue. It wasn’t the old folks home where the dementia patients were locked in and couldn’t escape. No it was the government building downtown. Did I mention Alberta has an NDP government?

I still haven’t forgot the time she pipes up in a debate on the TVO iirc to the effect “I fundamentally agree” that Canadians are stupid. I guess a good place to start with THAT assessment in her own riding.

Ron in Kelowna, there is a little place called Snow Lake Manitoba where they had been threatened with evacuation a number of times and then after they had to evacuate the town for one fire they built a golf course as a fire stop. Problem solved and it didn’t take a bunch of government bureaucrats to work it out. Simple eh!

    Instead of airlifting bazillions of tax dollars to rebuild Fort Mac, maybe they could allow industry to build the bloody pipelines and then lift the ‘moratorium’ on west coast tankers.
    After that, Fort Mac folks will be able to look after themselves, just as they’ve always done.

  34. Very much along the lines I am thinking. The Feds took $10s of thousands from me in taxes this year and what have they done to help these Albertans?
    No, instead they give my money to foreign head choppers. The foreigners should be the ones begging for my money, not my fellow Albertans/Canadians.
    If government isn’t here to do for us what we can’t do with the money they take from us, prevent a disaster like this and help the victims, then why do we suffer them to rule over us at all and abscond with the fruits of our labour?
    If we’re left holding the bag and helping our own people by giving donations at every business in Alberta, what do we need government for at all?

For comments like that, if I lived next door to the head of the watermelon party, I couldn’t care less if someone lit her house on fire as long as they ensured that the fire was contained to her property. That type of stupidity deserves total contempt and absolutely not offering any assistance to such people under any circumstances is the simplest for most of the sane population to do.
    When I moved to the interior in 2003, thought a lot about forest fires as this was the time that the Kelowna fires were happening and house location was in part dictated by distance from forest and brush. Spent a lot of time thinking about living close to forest and concrete houses with steel roofs and a large clearing around house would be next house if ever get some property outside the city.
    After the Slave Lake fire one would have thought that the Alberta government would have looked into cutting large clearings around towns surrounded by forest. Doesn’t seem to have happened. Perhaps those with more firefighting experience could weigh in on whether using thermobaric bombs along the advance path of the fire would be enough to slow it down. Never thought Russian TOS-1 as something to use in forest fires, but with the ability to obliterate a 400×200 m area, one should be able to rapidly create fire breaks.

  37. Well, Russia has offered to send firefighter and water bombers…………the Feds won’t accept help from Russia, derided it. Mexico too has offered to send help.
