    see, the YA !!! is dub-YA !!!’s response to the blackmail opportunity or at least *possibility* the uber big money boyz saw on the horizon; just say YA !!! to whatever they demand. the desperate situation arises, with some phone calls to the right(wing) people to move things along, well, the rest is history. including all them BONUSES and toys they bought with the bailout money.     The Web Sources focus on Stock trading & offshore numbered accounts (moving debt off the books) used by Enron, but Enron was never prosecuted for Energy fraud… Those that think that control of the Electrical Grid is NOT corrupted.. need to research Enron & California.
    The Clinton era started the Housing crisis because of the Dot.com crash…The trillions lost (dot.com) to the Market was made up by easy “second” Mortgage loans and the Housing Bubble was providing huge gains in equity… YES… GW Bush was not watching close enough, but all the experts (George Town) thought that using (unlocking) Housing Equity as a wealth builder was wise.. They were Wrong

  11. The subprime mortgage crisis which led to the crash of 2008 was initiated by one person – the guy who came up with the idea to bundle prime mortgages and sell them as investments. This led to bundles being diluted with both prime and subprime and eventually subprime ultimately reaching NINJA status (no income, no job, no assets).
    As the Big Short asks, “were the banks fraudulent or just plain stupid”?
    Illuminating was the response of the rating agencies that were nothing more than a fee for service business. Give them money and they rate your bonds triple A.
    While George Bush was on watch while the crisis unfolded, Obama oversaw the clean up. Seems to me the banks got off lightly (with a bail-out) when some of them (CEOs, Directors, CFOs) should have gone to jail.
    I also recall that the Conservative Government in Canada was talking of bank deregulation, reducing loan requirements, lower minimum down payments to 5% and extending amortization to 40 years. This could have led to a crash in the Canadian housing industry and the Cons wisely pulled back, eventually tightening loan requirements.
    But I love those “it was Bush what done it” stories. Keep them coming 🙂

  16. Do it yourself mosquito trap to combat spread of zika (and dengue and west nile) developed by Canadian doctor. The trap actually just traps eggs or larvae, but is probably seasonally effective at reducing mosquito populations. One comment in the CBC article (not linked here) suggests using a 1 or 2 litre plastic bottle, which is cheaper than a tire, and already has a drain. All you do is drain the water, straining it through fine enough cloth to catch the eggs, and then replace the pheromone laden water in the trap. Repeat every few days.

  17. well by golly the verdict is in: BOTH mainstream parties (known is some circles as the choice between tweedle dee and tweedle dum) are responsible for the mess.
    hint: the politicians are only the highly visible players, the ‘pin balls’ everyone looks at as the game plays out. the key players are inside the ‘computer chips’ mounted on the ‘circuit board’ inside the ‘machine’.
    here it is again: BOTH parties are rotten to the core. they no more ‘fix’ things then are solely responsible for the thing needing fixing. the game is decades long. MANY decades long. the unwritten understanding is if your career path puts you in the ‘corridors of power’, feel free to carry on stealing the wealth of the planet and proceeds from all that exploitation around you.
    BOTH parties people, BOTH of them are in on it. all based on human nature, one aspect of which says if a politishun can carve out a long and lucrative career by betraying the interests nation they will do it. the trick is to wrap it in gold *coloured* foil. aka propaganda. the overall results depends not a hoot which party puts their guy or gal in the white house. matters not a hoot.

  22. Malaria is effective population control in tropical regions where population density has exceeded the capability of people to feed themselves. Half of the worlds population lives in tropical mega slums where they can’t feed themselves. So called ‘foreign aid’ only allows populations to breed out of control. The biggest mistake that misdirected well-meaning do-gooders do is interfere with natural processes to control overpopulation in any species.

  23. For many years our community like many others has used biological mosquito control provided by http://www.dgregan.com/mosquitos.html to effectively limit mosquito populations. Every spring it’s introduced into ponds and other water bodies where mosquitoes breed. The contractor also treats my garden rain barrels with this biocide and I can personally attest to it’s excellent effectiveness in killing mosquito larvae.

  26. The die was set when Billary was Prez and Bawney Fwank was responsible for Fanny Mae. This set the ball rolling, forcing banks to lend to “atypical” clients to buy homes, so as not to “discriminate” against “people”.
    Of course, in this scenario, discriminate was supposed to be about, oh, the “colour” of people in the Dumbocrat Utopian world.
    In practice, what really happened, was that lenders were forced to lend to, basically, anybody, even if they didnt have any money at all.
    Hence, the NINJA mortgage moniker.
    Predatory lenders? Seriously? All along, I’ve always believed, that most of the fault lay with the IDIOTS who borrowed the money, to buy a house they couldn’t afford, or afford the payments in the first place.
    Yes, there was a certain amount of shady practices, miraculously turning junk rated bonds into AAA paper, blame AIG for insuring that, they should have known better.
    Blaming Dubya for this (the Dumbocrats, typically) is for the intellectually LAZY. Dubya has a share of blame for a lot of things, mostly his non-conservative policies

  28. Equal blame lies with those who covered it up by bundling those ‘toxic’ mortgages and knowingly selling them as legitimate investments. If the people had defaulted on the individual bad mortgages and had their homes repossessed then the economic damage would have been much more limited.

  30. I think they were encouraged a bit. Moreover, it provided an opportunity to live in a nice house — and if you defaulted on a payment, you could easily walk away because you had not invested very much. I think the biggest problem arose when they started raising interest rates after these people had signed on the dotted line. That almost guaranteed their defaulting.

  34. Yes of course they encouraged it, every salesman encourages you to buy their product or service. So? If one is too stupid to figure out how much they can afford they should be taken advantage off. The problems is with, as you mention, the fact that borrowers faced no consequences of default. They should be flogged and sold into indentured servitude as far as I am concerned. The fact that those who manage their finances responsibly have to subsidize those that don’t is a cancer on society.
