    One would think that Immigration Minister John McCallum would wish to acquaint immigrants to Canada with some of its history but perhaps not, given his ignorance of the subject.
    In 2002, as Liberal minister of defense, he admitted he had never heard of the 1942 Dieppe Raid where more than 900 Canadian soldiers died in a one-day assault on the French coast. He then confused the 1917 Battle of Vimy Ridge where, for the first time, Canadian soldiers fought as one unit under Canadian command, an event regarded as critical in the establishment of our national identity, suffering a loss of more than 3,900 dead, with Vichy, the French puppet government established by the Nazis in France in the Second World War. Truly, Liberals don’t own our history if they can’t even remember it.

  10. While the rich socialists should be suitably punished for tax evasion and whatever other crimes and misdemeanors they committed, there could be a reasonable set of circumstances that it may have proven it not worthwhile.
    It may have cost perhaps a whole lot more to get those rich socialists through the system, the lawyers, the courts and so on as compared to the sum to be collected.
    This is not a defense of the rich socialist lowlifes, it is a practical thing to do.

    Lev is the closest to the truth. years ago during a similar investigation of the behaviour of the CRA, it was explained that ordinary working Canadians do not have the resources to fight tax issues. it’s the law of diminishing returns. the super wealthy already have the lawyers on retainer, so it matters little to them. the additional expenses fighting the CRA are well worth it, thus the gubbamint bullies back down in face of the bigger hired bullies of the elites. it’s simple math; CRA calculates odds of winning compared to the likely tax amounts involved.
    working class suckers are a push over. they can’t duke it out in tax court, so they get scooped up like sardines in a net. the net result is huge amounts from thousands of them, into the pockets of politishuns of all persuasion. remember now, they ALL do it. being politishuns, they’ve got a LOT more in common with each other than differences due to ideology.

  28. Watch carefully. This “promoting women” agenda coming from the government is part of the UN,Agenda 2030 (global goals). In fact, much of what the Trudeau government has done so far lines up with the UN agenda for global governance: increases in immigration, promotion of women, carbon tax (as a pretense for fighting “climate change”, undermining avenues to Canadian economic strength, wearing rules for Canadian citizenship, etc. I would also argue that all this sudden attention in the States is preliminary to pumping up the North American Union. Both Obama and Trudeau are globalists, so they will get along like a house on fire — while Canada loses its sovereignty slowly but surely.

  29. You struck a nerve by blaming Harper for CRA “cutting a deal ”
    Ranting about Harper on SDA is like peeing into the wind, only it’s more messy.
    CRA gets their money and every one of those induviduals, corporations and trusts will be under scrutiny from CRA for quite some time forward and back several years. That will NOT be in the news. In short they got caught and now there screwed. Like you, any irregularities will result in multiple audits. CRA doesn’t waste their time for undo persecutions like they do in the US.
    I blame Harper (and Flaherty and Carney to some degree ) for navigating Canada through the 2008 financial crisis while in a minority government. It sickens me how Liberals and socialists with HDS love to talk about defecits incurred during the Harper years while they were the ones in the media saying the Conservatives hadn’t done enough. Canada emerged out if the financial crisis in the best fiscal shape and was the envy of the G20 and G7 nations.

    Dear Sir,
    I have been a member of the Conservative Party of Canada since it’s formation.
    The voters of Canada gave Stephen Harper the ability to return to them 10 years of stable, practical government.
    I’m sure I don’t need to remind you of the mountain of leftist road blocks endured by the right in this country.
    From entrenched public sector unions, indoctrinating education, media, and on and on.
    Realistic conservative options are few and tenuous.
    That being said, common sense and the truth will win out eventually.
    When Tim Hudak publicly announced his intention to ‘fire’ 100,000 public sector employees, I immediately smelled a rat.
    This policy of a reduced public sector is valid and needed. However, to announce it the way he did, when he did, could only be interpreted as either the most basic of political blunders or a intentional act to throw the election. Mr Hudak could have simply stayed home and would have won the last election. He certainly ‘snatched defeat’ from the jaws of victory.
    I have watched your rise in the party with interest and have agreed with many of your conservative ideas and options.
    I’m writing to you because I fear that for some unfathomable reason, you are following Tim Hudak’s losing playbook.
    He tried to appeal to Liberal and leftist voters, thinking that was the path to success. If Mike Harris taught Ontario Conservatives anything, it was that voters will elect majority Conservative Governments, if the party will only offer them actual Conservative policies.
    Your announcement that the Progressive Conservative Party stands behind carbon taxes, indicates your preference to the ‘Progressive’ part of the party over the ‘Conservative’ faction. Are you not aware that Carbon as a precursor to warming has been debunked?
    I hope this letter will spur you to research the current state of knowledge on the ‘Climate Change’ file, as opposed to the 24/7 lies being pushed by those on the opposite side of the political spectrum than fact based conservatism.
    If you continue to pull the party to the left as in the recent past, you will certainly doom my kids and grandkids to the debt and destruction created by leftists everywhere and particularly in Ontario. Why would voters give the PC’s power as a Liberal lite party? Wouldn’t they just vote for the real thing?
    Please consider a party name change to drop the ‘Progressive’ moniker. Offer the electorate a REAL conservative option. This is the path to victory. Bold bright free market colours and ideas are what the voter yearns for. Pale pastels have never carried the day.

    HARPER’s minions KNOW the uber rich have lawyers at the beck and call.
    therefore, they get a pass because the edict from on high is the indicated course of action.
    the fact the lawyers are ready to duke it out is enough for the CRA to back off, thus no penalties against them. the fact middle class tax payers lack the court room clout of lawyers on retainer makes them prime targets seeing as they lack a defense but collectively have lots of money to seize.
    read the article again. key word is ‘discretion’ of the minister of finance. and THAT goes all the way to the top. the deal was cut during Harper’s time in the PMO. and it isn’t just him that caters to the ‘teacher’s pet’ types. ALL politishuns do it. it’s the one thing they always all have in common.

  40. What we now call “education” is nothing more than opinions built on politically-correct slogans … NOT facts. The article on Copernicus reveals this shameful truth. Several generations have been brainwashed to believe that Christians (more specifically, The Roman Catholic Church) were/are anti-science. That the “church” “persecuted” and “rejected” Galileo and therefore science. However, never in that cheap sloganeering that passes for “education” is it mentioned that multiple Popes fully accepted the Copernicum model, or that the Catholic Church had a long history of integrating new scientific discoveries into church theology. Our poor excuses for educators ALWAYS FAIL to teach that the entire earth-centric model of the Universe was created by the Greek Mathematician-scientist Ptolemy … far before the world even knew what a “Pope” was. And I dare say that 99.9999% of all adults have -0- knowledge about how the Catholic Church’s Inquisition was ALL ABOUT squashing the Protestant splintering of the church, which was also the primary motivation for persecuting Galileo. That it wasn’t so much the church -vs- science as it was Christian -vs Christian. And lastly, the average adult today is so smug and arrogant about their own scientific knowledge (despite their complete inability to understand the actual science at all) that they impose their 2016 sensibilities onto the 16th century world in order to mock Christian faith. There is actually nothing intelligent about that at all. Nothing “educated” in that viewpoint whatsoever.

The S/E Saskatchewan Oil fields are been shut Down….Producing Oil Leases since Nov 2015 are suddenly gone… This article does not identify the Problem, but the Pipeline gathering distribution is ~ 50 years old & a suggested liability seems to be the issue. These wells will not function again & the lost wealth in the region will have a devastating impact…

    While I don’t totally disagree with you and realize that you are entitled to you opinion, giving out tax deals on arrears was not conceived by any government in particular. From the small town shoemaker who is in arrears on his shop on Main Street, to the wealthy industrialist who gets caught hiding brown enveloppes filled with cash in the Cayman Islands, in Canada, we would much prefer to come to a re-payment agreement than go to court.
    Courts that drag on for years and arrears that end up in a bankruptcy settlement for 10 cents on the dollar. The CBC was definitely at fault by pointing the finger to the Harper government on this story. And you may want to Google ”Corporate Liability in Canada” before you reply to my post.

  50. Actually, not that many deals are cut for the small town shoemaker on Main Street; he’s much more likely to have the full force of CRA land on him – google Irvin Leroux or John Marsden. On the other hand, friends of the government can get a real deal – think George Radwanski who went from bankruptcy to privacy commissioner even as he settled a $540,000 tax debt for $67,000.
    It’s not uncommon for accountants to advise their clients facing an audit to give the auditor something so a success can be reported, and pay the resulting penalty so CRA will go away. It’s often cheaper than trying to defend what one has done, particularly when faced with an auditor who will listen to NOTHING (heard of one auditor who was disputing the business use a of a vehicle and finally admitted there was legitimate business use but new tires were a capital item, not an expense). For a lot of small businesses, paying CRA fines and penalties is just a cost of doing business.
    From now on, should I hear of anyone facing swinging penalties and interest from CRA, I’m going to suggest they invoke the KPMG or the Radwanski deals as precedents as to settling their own affairs.
