The NFB started going downhill when Daddy Trudeau was in charge. It used to make some splendid documentaries and represented this country. Nowadays, I’m baffled as to what it does and why it still exists.

You are right about the NFB going down hill. All of this emphasis on equal opportunities for women strikes me as pandering. Film production is an arena where there simply are more men than women. It does seem unfair that one particular group will be favored for funding when financial support should be based on merit.

The film industry is a bizarre business model. There are, literally, only about a dozen directors in the world, male and female, who command the set for the production of major movies. There are hundreds of thousands of pedestrian directors around the world directing TV shows, indie film works, industrial videos, as part of a production company for which they are only a job description amongst many job descriptions.
The film industry is one of the most highly compartmentalized businesses on the planet with regard to jobs. Watch the credits the next time you watch a film. The director is the “boss on set” for the purpose of creating the bits of a film the editor puts together. Directors are chosen by executive producers of films according to their ability to steer the creation of the film in a manner that meets the budget constraints of the financiers. The analogue position in the industrial world is the plant manager.
What the NFB does, as well as the Ontario Film Development corp and a host of other government agencies is fund the making of indie films to a nepotistic and incestuous selection of familiars, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attract the attention of a studio, primarily because they haven’t demonstrated to the ability to make a decent return on investment for the financiers .
Getting funding for a truly independent film venture for someone starting out is a far more difficult process than for an entrepreneur seeking an investor for a widget innovation.
It’s the producers who secure funding, not the directors, so who is the NFB funding? Or are they simply going to tie the hands of the producer by artificially, and illegally (according to the Canadian Human Rights Act), re-defining what is a bona fide occupational requirement under section 15(2) of the HRA for technical expertise in the job position of directors? Like the rest of the Federal government, this simply places employment equity over productivity and creativity, and ensures that good female directors will now have to compete with many-fold more incompetent female directors in order to rise to the top of their extremely limited field.
Other than great stories such as the family dynamics in a beaver lodge or the transsexual desires of squirrels, The NFB produces boring and unentertaining crap.

I am really surprised at the negativity I see posted here ! I see this as a glorious OPPORTUNITY for Kate to “tell herstory” (as opposed to his-tory). Kate should apply for a $ 1.9 mil. gov. Grant to create a short animated film about the challenges of a woman living in fly-over Canada. I see a really kewl airbrushed story depicting a her-oine who has to do battle with beer-swilling, tv-watching misogynists who sexually harass her at the local diner. I envision a bright colorful wardrobe of flannel in every pattern imaginable (insert metaphor here). Just imagine the tales of masculine horror that can be told here. Go for it Kate ! Ive never watched a CFB film anyway(male or female) so how the money is wasted(and it IT wasted) is really of no concern to me.
What I want to see though is gender equality in nursing, teaching etc where men are under-represented.And lets get the research going so men can have babies too.How hard can it be??
