In fact, it’s too big a number to think of, let alone eight of them.
So, some perspective:
| Total Amount of Sewage in litres | 8,000,000,000.00 | |
| No. of flushes at 6 litres / flush | 1,333,333,333.33 | |
| Minutes in a year | 525,600.00 | |
| No. of flushes / minute | 2,536.78 |
In other words, twenty-five hundred people flushing their black-water once every minute for a full year. Yes, that’s real pollution, as opposed to the made-up kind.

Do you have any idea how toxic reprocessed putine and beer is. That is the staple diet in queerbec. And those French are big shitters. I worked there for a time … I know …
Yeah, 8 billion liters is a lot of crap, but to put it into perspective, which we’re supposed to be in favor of doing: the St.Lawrence outflow into the ocean is 16,661,600 liters per second.
The Montreal shit comprises roughly 60 seconds of outflow.
It’s gratifying to see Quebec dumping on the East for a change.
I guess the Sun is infected too.
Hovering over the link it says “Ottawa says Mtl can…”; going to the article it mentions the Environment Minister and the “federal government”.
If this was two months ago it’d be Harper in 26 point font all over the article.
Calls for a pipeline from Montreal to DC.
Proving once again that the solution to pollution is dilution. 🙂
Actually your logic is also valid to demonstrate the minimal impact of fracking.
But our drama queen PM wants to spend billion chasing CO2molecules around the sky when his city is poop infesting our largest national river.
Librano priorities are all in their own anal cavities.
The “best” part of the news story was the CBC and CP report that quoted Coderre as accusing the previous Conservative government as being “anti-science” because he had a “scientific” report saying that the raw sewage dump was OK. The previous Environment Minister ordered a study by a stackful of scientists, who apparently reported — not that it was OK to flush raw sewage into the river — but rather that doing so with 8 billion liters in winter was preferable to an uncontrolled dump from a rupture of the sewage system, especially if it occurred in the middle of summer. So, it wasn’t a scientific study OK’ing dumping raw sewage into a river. It was a study that could have had subtitles saying “Montreal and Quebec governments have left their sewer systems in such disrepair for so many scores of years that they may fall apart any time now and to make up for all that neglect, we’ll just burden the environment with a big load of crap and pretend it is a controlled release.”
Now if the previous government was anti-science for not wanting raw sewage in the river, then the new government must be super-scienced out for approving it.
By the way, has anyone aside from me noticed that most all of the ridings downstream from Liberal Montreal were won by Conservatives, NDP and BQ candidates. I suppose dumping raw sewage from on high to people who voted the “wrong” way is OK under the new regime.
The Eco-Jihad has begun.
It’s okay for Quebec to dump 8 billion liters of shit in the river. Just don’t have a 1000 liter spill at Fort McMurray or kill a few ducks. Albertans understand how the Canadian government works. Apparently so do Quebecers.
Coderre is a literal, figurative, ultimate Lieberal. The moment justine got elected, they begun physically *hitting on us all.
The Quebec shake-down artists will be holding up the Energy East pipeline looking for more money to protect their pristine waterways in LaSmell province. Lucky thing it isn’t cold or there would be shiticles galore.
This was posted to my facebook page:
The City of Montreal wants to dump 8 billion liters of untreated sewage into the St.Lawrence. It has also been described as 3,200 Olympic swimming pools. That sounds very bad.
American reports say 2,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Maybe American pools are bigger. I’ll stick with the bigger number.
Let examine the facts.
One Olympic Pool contains 2,500 m3 (cubic meters), so 3,200 pools would be 8,000,000 m3.
One cubic meter of water holds 1,000 liters, so the total liters of sewage is now 8,000,000,000. ( 8 billion ).
At least the arithmetic is correct.
What about the poor St.Lawrence? The average flow of water past Montreal is about 10,000 m3 per second.
In one day, there are 86,400 seconds, so that means that the average daily flow is 864,000,000 m3. Converting the m3 to liters makes 864,000,000,000 (864 billion) liters per day.
The problem with big numbers is that they are difficult to visualize.
The 8 billion liter sewage dump will be spread over about a week. Lets say that they go a day longer and take 8 days (it also makes the arithmetic easier).
That means that 1 billion liters of untreated sewage will be dumped per day.
Lets get rid of the billions because the are just too many zeroes to handle and see what we have.
If you compare the St.Lawrence water flow (864 bl ) per day with the sewage dump of (1 bl), you can see that the total sewage is pretty insignificant.
It’s not a great choice, it seems a lot less drastic than 3,200 swimming pools or 8 billion liters of water.
Excuse me while I go give birth to a couple of liberals. Hopefully my trudeau won’t back up this time.
The reason given for cancellation of the quebek portion of the Energy East pipeline were Beluga whales. They live in the St Lawrence River part of the year and the pipeline apparently posed a threat to them? Guess the bribe offered to quebek was insufficient and the pipeline got nixed.
Quebek is a shithole of corruption. They were shut out for the past 10 years and now the gravy train is back on track. Let the games begin.
“Minister of the Environment and Climate Change”? Is that for real?
The Rebel.media is featuring this story about a NS plant closing: http://www.therebel.media/liberals_close_ns_plant_for_dumping_carrot_juice
“About 100 seasonal workers are losing their jobs at an Annapolis Valley frozen food processing plant that will close after Environment Canada ordered it to stop discharging waste water into a nearby waterway.
Hillaton Foods, a division of Oxford Frozen Foods Ltd. that primarily processes carrots for the North American market, is shutting down its facility near Canning, N.S., at the end of the year.”
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/oxford-frozen-foods-closure-water-environment-canada-1.3301476
HA! They voted for it.
Lance you are – pardon the pun -full of it.
Not all sewage is equal – some is much more diluted than others. As I understand it this flush is very dilute.
And as a commenter noted above this is a relatively small discharge compared to the flow rate of the st Lawrence and within a few hours it is diluted further when it enters the gulf.
This is also a one time – not a chronic event. It is also the cheapest option. It is the smart option.
And conservatives obfuscating on this issue like you are is objectionable.
PET Cemetery Report.
Who allowed this report to pass through the filter?
It’s a damning report from Ass. Press. It’s been given world-wide coverage.
…-
“New Canadian government allows Montreal sewage-dumping plan”
“MONTREAL (AP) — Canada’s new environment minister on Monday approved Montreal’s plan to discharge 8 billion liters (2.1 billion gallons) of untreated sewage into the St. Lawrence River.
Liberal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said from Paris that she’s asking the city to implement several measures before dumping the waste water such as monitoring the discharge and to improve emergency clean-up plans.”
“U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, had asked U.S. environmental regulators to work with Canada to stop the discharge. The EPA said it has no regulatory authority in Canada.”

Please point out my error, Gord.
Maz2, thanks to AP, enviro hypocrite Libs…
Has Montreal improved their sewage treatment for the other 892 billion litres of sewage it dumps into the St Lawrence river?
Correction: Montreal has had previous sewage dumps – the last being as recent as 6 years ago.
I guess what I object to is the hypocrisy of the whole issue. If Alberta has a spill, even a minor one the media are all over it. Last spring a small spill occurred and the media reported the size of it in square feet! The total amount of the spill was miniscule but it covered 100’s of thousands of square feet…. which in reality was about 2 acres and was remediated without incident. The media was apoplectic. The sewage dump is getting a pass. Hey it’s quebek and it’s the libranos now.
The sewage being released is probably fairly benign. The river may be completely able to absorb it but the media response to it is disproportionate when compared to similar incidents here in AB or elsewhere when they can score cheap points on their enemies (conservatives).
Yes, Lickmuffin, unfortunately it is called that now.
I think we should demand it be changed to “Global Warming” so they won’t be able to duck it when things continue to get colder. (Especially if we do end up in another, major Maunder Minimum.)
Lance:
You say you want to give the dump perspective and then proceed to give it the wrong perspective – comparing it to toilet flushes instead of river flows and ocean Gulfs. By doing so you exaggerate the perspective instead of putting it in the relevant perspective.
Sewage treatment plants and mundane structures like highways come strictly under provincial responsibility in the Constitution. Quebec has received millions in transfer payments for years from federally collected taxes. Quebec insists such revenues are absolutely their’s to administer. If the province chooses to spend the money on subsidized child care, it is their priority. Worth remembering when we hear calls for federal spending on “infrastructure” Both Quebec and Ont frittered away billions of federal transfers, which should have been directed toward essential civic structures.
Hear Hear. Hold them up to their own standards.
I do nothing more than the than those who would push for regulatory regimes requiring the need to document oil spills of greater than 500 mL on-site. Those whose sole purpose is to categorize those 2 cups of oil as ‘a spill’.
That is my purpose. YMMV.
No other province would be allowed to get away with this. The CBC would be all over Alberta, Saskatchewan, BC and even Ontario if they tried to promote this lie. Yet the Quebec Mafia are allowed to get away with it with complete silence by the Enviro-Nazis. Just try to imagine what type of outcry would have occurred if Steven Harper had approved this. Craig Oliver would have peed his pants and went into an envirorage, demanding that the government cease and desist any further approvals of this terrible environmental disaster.
Another Liberal bullshit story, no pun intended?? Is that why we’re sending our Federal Ministers to the Climate Change Conference in Paris in three weeks from now?? To learn how to lie about dumping 2 billion US gallons of sewers into the St. Lawrence?? To learn how to teach Denis Coderre to mislead people into believing that Montreal sewage, that creates methane into the atmosphere, is not in any way related to climate change, and that it has to be the Tarsands of Alberta that are at fault? How about the baby ducks and geese that will be picking up turds and cigarette butts in their little yellow beaks?? Is that good for nature!
Just what Canada needs!! Another Liberal government controlled by Quebec mobsters!! And by the way, isn’t that why we got rid of the Liberals in the fist place or have we already forgotten??
Just curious. This sewage dump. Was it ‘dirty’ sewage?
pfft.
when I was a kid, the story about the montreal section of the st lawrence was the pollution was so bad, if you had the misfortune to fall in it, no one would follow to rescue you because of the stench.
some things never change.
also, not one word in any MSM Ive found to explain how this shytty situation was allowed to develop in the first place. I guess thats where the mob connection is.
Apropos fuel spills, but have a read as the understanding of large numbers is also applicable to the sewage dump….
That said, it is more than passing curious, that the Liberal Mayor of Montreal within minutes of his buddies winning the federal election, simply bashes on. Imagine for a moment the media outrage, if the Mayor was a former conservative bigwig.
https://achemistinlangley.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/how-big-and-small-numbers-influence-science-communication-part-1-understanding-fuel-spill-volumes/
The Liberals could have ordered all drug dealers and other outlets
in Montreal to hand out free narcotics for the week of “the big dump”.
That would have cut the outflow by a considerable amount.
Send in their invoices to Ottawa, bien sur.
For those afraid of winding up as addicts, free KD along with an extra
large helping of simulated process cheese slice material.
Here is a scale for you this is 50’million bbls or 40 Exxon Valdez spills
“Was it ‘dirty’ sewage?”
It’s Quebec – it doesn’t stink – according to the Liberals.
Its okay when Liberals pollute, its always justified.
Not like those evil knuckledragging earth killing conservative right-wing nutjobs do it. Then its bad, real bad.
Why is Montreal’s sewage treatment insufficient to deal with this? Whatever the quantity, dumping raw sewage says ” Third World” like nothing else.
lance, you pick your topics well. You once mewled about being a fiscal con and a social liederal, so this sh1ty topic sure suits yer social lieberal designate.
Sigh. So much B.S. here. I wonder if anyone has ever compared the crap on the internet to the crap flowing down the river…
The sewer system is frequently overpowered by heavy rainfall. Not often, but it does happen. The excess is allowed to drain directly into the St.Lawrence instead of being treated.
It has nothing to do with ‘insufficiency’. Why don’t you do a bit of research instead of posting another inane comment?
A major pipe has to be repaired before snow season. There is no simple (or cheap) way to stop the flow, so they are going to dump it for 7 days, until the pipes are repaired.
Lance: It doesn’t matter if you call it flushes per person or Olympic Size Swimming Pools, the numbers are insignificant compared to the volume of water flowing down the St.Lawrence.
River water is somewhat dirty. It’s runoff from the land and other rivers upstream. Animals and fish poo into it all the time. Are you going to start asking the moose up north to start using outhouses?
Dumping into a river whose average flow is 864 billion liters per day is not the same as an oil leak that doesn’t go anywhere. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of ‘natural’ oil leaks like the La Brea Tar pits in L.A. Maybe the Onion will feature Environmentalists demonstrating against Mother Nature for ‘permitting’ the leakage of all that oil…
As Sgt. lejaune said… If the Environmentalists REALLY want to help,, they should stop going to the toilet for a week. Let them crap in their compost bins.
Or, to put it another way, fast enough to fill the average backyard swimming pool in something like 3 to 4 seconds, and doing so for just over 600,000 seconds (one week). Any private concern with these plans would have protests and legal action already deployed against them.
