Metrolinx has packed up its 31-metre-tall wind turbine at the Lisgar GO Station after it produced 91 per cent less electricity than projected.
The provincial transportation agency has officially dumped a pilot project aimed at creating renewable energy using a $620,000 wind turbine. Unveiled in 2009, the turbine was slated to produce enough energy to power 80 per cent of the Lisgar GO station’s electricity per year – 98,550 kilowatt hours (kWh). It fell far short of its targets, producing less than ten per cent of that.
But fear not, gentle taxpayers!
Despite the setback, Aikins said Metrolinx has been firm on its commitment to an energy management program, installing solar panels on new buildings…
h/t Jim

Assuming a twenty year straight line depreciation and no maintenance costs that mean the cost per KWH was about $3.25.
And no one was fired or sued for this?
LMD-Leftist Mental Disorder, try to tell any of these green renewable energy zealots that the wind doesn’t always blow.
And Trudope has Butt’s advising him, OMG.
These are the eco-crucifixes of the new theocracy that is essential to save mankind from imminent doom. Have a little faith. Besides, there is a consensus…….
Shovel-ready jobs! People can be hired (at union wages, of course) to shovel snow off solar panels, so they can stare unimpeded at a dark winter sky.
Gord, if it would have produced as projected, the energy cost would have been a whopping 31 cents per kWh. Someone should have been fired for approving that. In truth, there should be bus loads of firings.

Great!
I guess the coffeemaker in the manager’s office is all taken care of then.
BOHICA Onateri-oew!
Maybe a little Vaseline will help the next 4 yrs. go a bit “smoother”
Those solar panels will really produce power for the morning and evening rush hour in the winter!
Forget the stinking giant fans. All you need is a license, a ‘social’ license.
From my read of the morning paper:
SIMPLE YET BRILLIANT PLAN TO SAVE ALBERTA’S ECONOMY (Page B4, Calgary Herald)
How to do it?
Tomatoes, cucumbers, etc
Haven’t we gone there before? And the magnesium plant is still sitting out on the prairie waiting for an infrastructure kickstart.
It’s pretty obvious that politicians and the media don’t really understand intermittency and dispatchability when calculating the value of renewable energy. Since even the best sites only produce 20-30% of installed capacity, every MW of wind power built must have equal MWs of tradition electrical source built (but run inefficiently and often losing money). you’re paying for both in $ and CO2 footprints but you rarely find that in the benefits calculation and reports of rapidly decreasing costs of green energy. More hidden is that wind (and probably solar) are not able to recover from their own CO2 cost to build them. Their intermittency and short lifespans make this impossible for even google engineers to overcome.
Only hydro and biofuel are reliable, affordable and renewable but biofuel has other problems : cutting down NA trees and shipping them to the UK and Europe to be burned in old coal plants ; increased planting acres of farmland to grow fuel instead of food; increasing the price of food for the poor.
You’d think progressives could think of better things to spend money on.
*did anyone else note that the company involved is also part of quebecs corrupt construction industry scandal. Organized crime is also heavily involved in the EU ETS trading. Not surprising, organized crime and crony capitalists (but I repeat myself) will assemble wherever governments are giving away tax money without any interest in ROI.
Like Captain Renault, these folks are shocked, truly shocked to discover wind turbines are useless at generating cost efficient electricity. Now if Ont could only get rid of the other 2000 or so industrial wind turbines. At least this one was not built on prime crop land, most of the others are. And this is the epitome of ecological pollution, paving over priceless crop land to build useless wind towers. It cannot be repeated often enough, the only beneficiaries of McGuinty/Wynne’s wind fiasco are the Liberal connected Wind companies.
They should change the nameplate capacity on wind turbines with faceplant capacity. Nameplate capacity is what the turbine is capable of producing in a theoretical world. Faceplant capacity is what the turbine will typically produce in the real world.
These silly airhead enviroentalists and their idiotic Green Energy poppycock Windturbines harming many birds and bats and all the while these granola munchers/tree huggers are still forcing their rediculous ideas on us
They are not shocked. They worked. They got the subsidies. Swindle mills and subsidy farms are nothing about producing energy, just money with the assistance of your pals in government.
To make other carbon compounds from CO2 means reducing the carbon, which means putting back into it more energy than was obtained by burning it in the first place. Because the Second law of Thermodynamics is the law around here (“here” being the Universe).
