The story links to another article — https://news.vice.com/article/omar-khadr-ordered-to-pay-134-million-in-lawsuit-over-death-injury-of-us-soldiers — that says a US judge ordered Khadr to pay $134 million to the estate and widow of the soldier he killed. It also mentions Khadr’s $20 million lawsuit against the Canadian government for “wrongful imprisonment.” One can hope that if he ever does come into money, it goes to make amends to the family of the US soldier he killed. That would be a real lesson in accountability.

I’ve said since the US went into Afghanistan and Iraq that Gitmo was a mistake. With no end game, detaining Jihadis at Gitmo was an invitation to progressives and their media to politically take the side of the prisoners. Jihadis like Omar should have been dealt with in theatre where combatants out of uniform don’t fall under the Geneva Convention. The underlying legal obsessions of the US help explain why they haven’t actually won a war in 70 years despite their being able to defeat any military force in the battlefield.
