Control the huge oilfields there and steal as much oil as possible.

2. NATO is a military alliance. It did not impose any sanctions. Nor did the UN impose any against Iran’s petroleum industries. The UN was mostly concerned with arms embargo and nuclear non-proliferation. The EU and the US imposed sanctions against their petroleum industries but since Turkey is not an EU member, nor is it the 58th State, it is free to ignore those sanctions. Our own sanctions do not align perfectly with the US or EU. For that matter they don’t align with each other
Well yeah, but Turkey’s actions are precisely why the Obama agreement is so important. Obama, in his role as leader of the free world, is so respected by world leaders that no one would dare break his signature agreement. If they did, he might have Marie Harf send out a nasty Tweet or 2 to get them back in line.
As we should all know nothing happens in isolation, this just adds to the narrative:

That Iran has been subjected to “sanctions” is implied by most of our political elite and masters, that the forthcoming “Iran deal” is even on the table is due to failure to stop its nuclear program when “all” other options have failed. So if nothing more we know that to be a lie.
NATO “allies” originally born out of the perceived need to have a unified front against the spread of aggressive militaristic Communist form of socialism after the second world war included Turkey as part of the greater German reintegration. That worked well whilst turkey was being run as a nominally a secular country and no ones eye was on the greater enemy of Islam, the stated aims of NATO have since the demise of the USSR changed, whether NATO like the UN serves any useful purpose in combating any present day threat is a very real question. The diplomatic ties of NATO may very well tie us to supporting a NATO country like turkey with its aggressive policy to undermine the middle east in its push to re-establish the caliphate. Whilst most may bork at the chance of that happening, the trade off in the first instance will probably be the diplomatic pressure supporting Turkey a “fellow” NATO member. That could said to already have happened with the POTUS seeming to actively sided with Turkey in its dealings not only with the muslim world but the way it interacts with Israel.

The west may see ISIS as the foe but to Turkey they are soul brothers or useful idiots and the Kurds are the real problem.

Nato is complicit and too weak kneed to interfere as long as the Russian bear is threatening to expand its borders in the Ukraine. Not to mention Europe needs the fossil fuels from Russia in order to avoid freezing in the winter, having put their eggs in the “green” baskets which have been proven to have a very weak bottom. However that thinking seems to have changed among enough of Turkey’s voters during the last few elections, as voting patterns seem to indicate that many Turks want to align themselves with the radical Muslim states. Does Turkey have aims of trying to reestablishing the Ottoman Empire.

It’s worth remembering that Turkey has long been snubbed or put off in its attempts to become a part of Europe, e,g, joining the EU. Europeans shouldn’t be surprised when the Turks lose patience and turn in other directions.
As for re-establishing the Ottoman Empire, as absurd as the idea is, the historical record suggests the Sultan/Caliph in Constantinople was quite an effective clamp on Islamic extremism in his day. The Ottomans would have taken a rigorous approach to the Islamic State using methods that would make our precious Western leaders pretty queasy.
