Given the lion’s unfortunate name, I am not at all surprised if several high-ranking Zimbabweans wanted him dead. I doubt he was as “loved” in his native Zimbabwe as the internet nannies make out. Come to think of it, why were the internet nannies not on this story earlier, and helping to arrange fast-track asylum for the lion?
I mean in rural Africa, where lions kill people quite often, they are often feared and hated, and to give the poor animal the name “Cecil” … I mean that had to have been a slam-dunk asylum case! Where were all the nannies when it counted?
Having grown up in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe it saddens me to see that some want to stand up for this creep. If the dentist was guilty of poaching then let him pay for that but he has done nothing else wrong. I saw an article the other day comparing the value placed on food animals vs trophy animals. Animals are not looked after and slaughtered willy nilly in some of these places for food but if you say that some rich foreigner will pay a whole lot of money to shoot a great big animal they look after them real well for their time on this earth. And the benefits it brings to people and communities over there. And like another article said, lions die every day over there. Why this lion? Why is he so special? Is it because some rich, white, American Republican did it?
