Teachers can lawfully “confiscate, keep or destroy” unhealthy snacks in children’s school lunch boxes, a Government minister has said.
Lord Nash, an education minister, said that the child in question and a second member of staff should be present during the search. Parents must also be warned that the searches might take place.

Strip searches in schools will only be performed by police not school staff, Quebec Education Minister François Blais says.
Blais called the practice “humiliating” and unnecessary and said the government will move swiftly to introduce a ban.

The minister made the announcement in Quebec City this afternoon after a former Crown prosecutor made the recommendation in a report following a controversial incident earlier this year.
In February, a 15-year-old girl was strip searched at her Quebec City school because staff believed she was trafficking drugs. No drugs were found.
The teenager said she felt humiliated and claimed she was not allowed to call her mother before the search.
Staff at Neufchâtel High School denied that accusation.
The ensuing controversy ended up costing then Education Minister Yves Bolduc his job.
At the time, Bolduc defended the practice of strip searching, saying it was within the rules as long as it’s carried out in a respectful manner.

Of course the fact that what is or is not healthy is not accepted by any authority. Fruit chews containing 100% fruit had hidden sugar. No – it had unhidden sugar, just like all fruit. People just love to make useless rules for others to follow. There is so much pseudo-science around nutrition and a lot of otherwise intelligent people believe the quackery.
The school becomes the school yard bully. Brings new meaning to Pink Floyd’s “Teacher! Leave those kids alone!”. If the school takes away food intended for a student isn’t there a responsibility to replace what they take with something else so the kid isn’t going hungry? Docs have to follow a “do no harm” protocol. Why not teachers?
