Balancing family responsibilities while in public life is always a challenge. This is particularly true when you have a child with special needs. Recently my wife and I received some difficult news about the health of our beautiful son Spencer.
Now, having said that, the CBC is losing their staunchest defender in the CPC.

First McKay and now James Moore. Both visited our riding in the last 4 months and now both have retired! Who next Kenney?
IMO conservatives should take nothing for granted in the upcoming election. They have to count on a solid split between the Dippers and Liebels.
Well do not overlook James magnificent effort to ensure Industry Canada is corruption free.
Oh right.. CSA never mind.
It’s too bad and I wish him the best. I’m PO’d about the headline in the NP “another Harper minister jumps ship”. In light of the facts of why he actually resigned, does this sound like a ‘fair and balanced’ headline to you? This from the NP no less. It’s one big orgy of HDS.
Yup, family first.
Having said that, he’s a CINO, thru and thru.
His public pronouncements regarding “increased cell competition” thru increased government regulations and heavy handed government interference comes right out of the NDP playbook.
Good riddance, a real conservative, business minded, is required, no more CINOs.
When Prime Minister Harper resigns, look for Maxime Bernier to make a strong bid for the party leadership.
I know nothing about the man or his family. I do know that honesty entails more than, I have family concerns or problems. weaseling out of responsibility and using your family does not cut it. I apologize if he indeed has a problem that is so severe that he cannot tell people about it. I for one would have no problem letting those who voted for me and who were close to me know what the problem was. truth is so hard to find.
He laid it out. His son is ill. Probably the big C I’m guessing.
Ive wondered why Harper hasn’t done more to raise the status of Maxime Bernier. His screw up was a long time ago. Votes in Quebec are always a bonus.
Good grief. He is choosing not to run again. He does not owe anyone an explanation. No one is obliged to run in an election.
I had heard that Gordon O’Conner is also not planning to run again. I do hope the Conservatives are able to find some good replacements.
Some of you commenters ought to be ashamed of yourselves. We know James Moore and his family. James is an honourable man, who has a lovely family and a darling little boy who needs his support right now.
Well since you know nothing, as you say, keep your bonehead comments to yourself.
The way things are going Maxime Bernier will be the only experienced, credible potential leader the party has left.
Thanks skidder! Cheers;
CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA, CSA,
CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA, CYA,
and i still wish him all the best with his son
“Some of you commenters ought to be ashamed of yourselves. We know James Moore and his family.”
The commenters know James Moore the politician and are happy to see him gone from the Cabinet. There is no shame in that.
I have 2 grandsons that have sever special needs. I have changed a lucritive career to have my wife and I close to give support to our family. He was a terrible cabinet minister. And it’s good he won’t be running again. That’s politics. But I certainly wish him and his family all the best. Until one experiences such adversity one should not judge ones motives
Comments that focus critically on a politician’s service when such a personal struggle is announced should be served up with tact and grace; otherwise we turn into ‘them’ and are no better for it.
Thank you.
This man is a Canadian politician, not a Hollywood starlet. I, for one, do not demand he lay out his private life so I can sift through the entrails to determine if his public reason for retiring is a true one. He has stated he has a special needs child. He’s also been a cabinet minister representing a riding several time zones from Ottawa, which has its own problems. I, for one, wish him and his family well, particularly during what sounds unfortunately a rather challenging future.
Disgusting comment, oldwhiteguy, and you should do a bit of research before writing such crap.
James Moore and his wife have a son born with skeletal dysplasia and from what he said the condition has worsened.
Everyone would think less of him if he didn’t think he should spend more time at home.
nothing disgusting about it. I asked a question. when you are in public life your public deserves an answer and the answer can lead to more empathy, not less.
