It’s too catchy:

Last month, a 24-year-old fan of Rangers, the largely Protestant soccer team, was banged up for four months for singing “The Billy Boys,” an old anti-Catholic ditty that Rangers fans have been singing for years, mainly to annoy fans of Celtic, the largely Catholic soccer team. He was belting it out as he walked along a street to a game. He was arrested, found guilty of songcrimes–something even Orwell failed to foresee–and sent down.

  17. Now we have the words, Nicola, we’ll need the tune. I can hum a bit of it, but boy, I never knew the words were so full of “triumphalism”. And THEY say “Je me souviens” heh, heh. (P.S.) being a (so-so) Catholic I would likely have given him a good beating (that’s my prejudice!)

  19. Nicola, I knew the first verse of the song and used the tune in a promotional video to attract some US participants for a conference we were organizing a few years back. A version of the lyrics managed to work Montcalm and the fleur de lys into them and, in my opinion, was rather good and would have made a considerably more inspirational national anthem than our current one.
    Although I don’t know the words to “The Billy Boys”, if the political correctos are grievously offended by them, I can’t imagine their reaction to the words of “The North Atlantic Squadron”.

    The words are these (or some variation):
    “Hello, Hello,

    “Billy” stands for King William (William of Orange) of course.
    The song is actually banned from Scottish football matches.

We’ve all been awfully bloody thin skinned if taking offense at history is now the wave of the future.   23. I have known that song by heart since I was 8 years old. It was the second song we were required to memorize right after God Save The King. I access a choir singing it on You-Tube
    every Dominion Day and play it long and loud at our annual backyard BBQ. It should be our National Anthem.
