I’ll cut right to the chase.
If you’re going to conclude that diet soda consumption is linked to weight gain and increased abdominal circumference you’d damn well better control for diet as a whole given that diet beverage consumption may simply be a marker for people who eat more indulgent foods and think, erroneously, that choosing the diet pop with their mega combo will somehow protect their weights and waists, and because there is no known plausible mechanism for a direct link. This study didn’t.
Like climate and environmental research, what government wants, government gets.

While there is much evidence that diet pop presents far more downside than weight gain there is a broader problem afoot. Our benevolent betters at the UN run a commission called the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Jointly funded by WHO and FAO it is the final arbiter of standards for any WTO adjudicated trade-in-food dispute and also the international standard setting agency for food and additive quality. In a private conversation at an event in Germany about ten years ago, a retiring “Codex Secretariat” staffer told me (over a little too much wine) that whole process had been co-opted into a corporate gong show. I’m not blaming the corps for seeking profit…that is what they do. The Agency itself has been turned into a rubber stamp for the right price…very much like what we see regularily featured here about the CSA.
Funny that you should bring this up.
How does this qualify things?

Could be that her constitution is superior though.
The quick way to get a startling result is – BE INCOMPETENT!
It never fails.
peter “While there is much evidence that diet pop presents far more downside than weight gain”
No. 1 – Bull – what evidence? Why doesn’t Health Canada know about this evidence.
No. 2 – To think that one item with no calories is responsible for fatties being fat is stupid. Who drinks diet pop? Fatties. Do thin people drink diet pop? No. Do we suspect that diet pop drinkers are fat because they are already fat? Friggin idiots.
“To think that one item with no calories is responsible for fatties being fat is stupid.”
I think peter was referring to the downside of aspartame itself being worse than the ‘upside’ of avoiding weight gain.
>Conflicts of interest in the studies performed on aspartame and the way in which its approval was obtained is an ongoing controversy. Dr. Robert Walton surveyed the studies of aspartame in the peer-reviewed medical literature. He states that of the 166 studies felt to have relevance for questions of human safety, 74 had Nutrasweet industry (those who make aspartame) related funding and 92 were independently funded. One hundred percent of the research performed by the company who makes aspartame confirmed aspartame’s safety, whereas 92% of the independently funded research found problems with consuming aspartame.http://www.medicinenet.com/artificial_sweeteners/page8.htm
I’ve read studies where the consumption of aspartame(most diet pop) combined with the consumption of MSG(most salty snacks) creates a synergistic reaction between aspartame and MSG which led to widespread brain lesions in the subject rats.
Thanks for saving me the trouble. I would also recommend neurologist Dr. Russell Blaylock’s book on Excitotoxins. I know it won’t matter much around here, but it was Donald Rumsfeld as CEO (?) of Searle who got the newly inaugurated Reagan administration to override the FDA’s recommendation to not approve aspartame. As an aside I can still remember from when I was a kid the photos of bulldozers crushing millions of cans of diet pop containing cyclamates.
In my day it was saccharin that was the evil poison. And strontium 90 in milk.
I guess they were replaced by bigger and better things to scare us.
Kind of like with Sacarine its its so call cancer risks providing you feed a lab critter 25 of more cans of diet soda a day
Yeah well, MSG affects more than kids.
I recall my X……if we had Chinese out next morning I need a whip, chair and revolver….

You know, the truth of the matter is that -nobody- understands the current societal surge in obesity. Almost everything in the media about it is the purest possible speculation, uninformed by the most casual connection to facts.
All BS, all the time.
I will say that most of the docs who work on fatties agree that the really -morbidly- obese ones are completely crazy. We’re talking the 400+ Club here. All wackos.
So what interests me more is why do we have so many people going crazy these days?

This issue is not new, and we must question all scientific discoveries, but this isn’t just a media hype. This association has been long considered, and there have indeed been studies that controlled for total caloric intake, and that showed the same association. Please note I did not say cause, but it looks pretty suspicious. Conservatives need not worry, however, as the evidence shows this to be true in rats. Look out Liberals.
